` It has for its object the provision of a new and simplified-construction which may be more readily and easily manufactured than those heretofore known in the art. Y
Various other objects and advantages of our invention will be obvious from the following particular description of one form of mechanism embodying the invention or from an inspection of the accompanying drawings; and the invention also constitutes certainnew and novel features of the construction and combination of partsv hereinafter set forth and claimed.

' 30v 'I'he base I8 of suitable material may be provided having struck down portions II integral with said base-for supporting the base and provided with side plates I2l and I3 rigidly fixed to i the base by studs and lock nuts fastened to ears I4,integr'al with the side plates. 'I'he top edges of the plates'are held rigidly by a plate I5 which is likewise fastened to ears integral with the side plate, and have a portion of said plate turned upwardly as shown at I5 (Fig. .31);
Time unit 'I'he side plate I2 has mounted thereon a suitableconstant speed electric motor I6 fastened thereto-by bolts I1 and held out from the side of said plate by spacers I8. 'I'he shaft I9' of the motor has xed thereto a cam=20 which makes one revolution'per minute andwhich cooperates with a cam Wiper 2| pivotally mounted on a stud 22 fixed to the side plate I2. Said cam wiper is rigidly attached to a pawl arm 23 by means of a rivet 24, said pawl arm being pivoted on said stud `22 and biased in a counterclockwlse direction by a spring25. The pawl arm 23 carries a pawl 26 pivotally mounted thereon and biased in 5 a counterclockwlse direction by'a spring 21 to `cooperate with a ratchet wheel 28 which is pivotally mounted on a stud 29 xed to the slde iframe. The ratchet wheel is xed to a unit printing wheel 30 which carries the-unit desig- Anation of the minute. A plurality of printing wheels are provided as indicated at 3l (Fig. 1), each having a cooperating ratchet wheel and lpawl for actuating the same. These wheels constitute the day wheel, the hour wheel, the tens of minutes wheel and the units of minutes wheel.
The carry-over or transfer mechanism from the units to the tens minute and to the hour minute as well as from the hour to the day type Wheel is accomplished in the well known manner, fully describedin .numerous patent disclosures such as, forexample, Patent No. '171,494 by storing energy in a spring-biased pawl by means of a cam rotated integrally with the type member of a lower ord'er so that the pawl drops lfroxn the cam at each revolution of the .type 20 wheel of the lower order to release the pawl andmove the type wheel'of the next higher order forward one step. As this method is Vold and well known in the art and plays no part in the present invention, it is deemed that no' 25 further explanation of the transfer mechanism is necessary. V
An endless ribbon 32 is provided which is carried across the face of the type' wheels and around the timing unit on rollers 33, said rollersv 30 l(Fig. 3) Vcooperating with a pawl member for feeding the ribbon in a manner to be described later. The ribbon is held under suitable tension by a roller 31 'pivotally mounted on a lever 38 40 which in turn is pivotally supported on the stud 39' and biased in a clockwise direction by the spring 40 fixed to the side frame. f A printing4 hammer 4I, provided'with a plate 42, is .pivoted 'on a stud 43 and is biased in a counterclockwlse direction by a spring 44 f astened at one end to a projection 45 integral with a printing hammer and a projection 46 integral with a bracket 41 pivoted on said stud, said 50 bracket spanning the printing hammer and provided with a cross member 48 (Fig. 1) which acts Vas a limit stop against further rotation o f the printing hammer in a counterclockwlse direction under the biasing action of the spring 44. 'I'he upper end of the actuating member 5I. is supplied with a cam-shaped surface 55 which cooperates with an' eccentric bushing 56 so that when the member 5| is moved upwardly against this bushing, it will cam said` member in a clockwise direction until the hook is moved out of cooperation with the projection 49 to release the printing hammer to eilect a printing operation, said printinghammer having in the meantime been moved in a counterclockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 2 by the upward movement of the hooked member 49 moving the bracket 41 in a, counterclockwise direction. 'Ihe bracket 41 when released is propelled clockwise by the spring 51, fixed to a stud 58.
'I'he registration lever is pivoted to the side frame by means of a stud 59 and is biased in a counterclockwise direction by a spring 60 iixed.

A guide member l spaced slightly outwardly from the side frame I2 is provided to hold the registration lever in proper alinement adjacent said side frame and an eccentric bushing 66 is provided as a limit stop for limiting the upward movement of the registration arm and an eccentric bushing 61 is provided as a. limit stop for the downward movement of the registration arm. AU-shapedplate 68 is provided with extensions 69 that t through slotted apertures 10 along the upper edge of the side frames to permit said plate to be slid backwards and forwards longitudinally of said side frame (Figs. 2, 3 and 4). Two levers o 1| and 12 are fixed to a shaft 13 which is journalled in the side frames. Said levers are biased by a spring 14, one end of which is xed to the lever 12 and the other` end of which is xed to a lever 15 which ispivotally mounted on said rod.
An extension 16 of the lever 12 rests against a stud 11 fixed to the lever 15 which acts as a limit l stop for the relative movement between the le-I vers 12 and 15 underl the biasing action of said spring. 'I'he upper endof the levers 1I and 12 65 engage apertures 18 in the plate 68 (Fig. 1) so that when theyare oscillated about their pivotal support, said plate is slid backward and forward. Thel stud 11 projects through an aperture |08 in the side plate I2 and into the plane of move` o r'nent of the registration lever 53. A slotted link 70 rdepressed to make a printing registration the.
vIII,9 is pivotally mounted on the stud 11 and is provided with jan elongated slot I|0 which is slidably connected to a stud I fixed to the registration lever 53. When the registration lever is stud slides along the slot until it reaches the bottom, then upon further depression of the registration lever it pushes the link |09 downward to eiect `a paper feeding operation.
Four studs 19 are fixed to the U-shaped plate and extend upwardly through cut-away portions in the plate I5 extending beyond the plane of said plate and have fixed thereto at their upper ends a plate which moves backward and forward with the U-,shaped plate.
The U -shaped plate pivotally supports two camshaped gripper members 8| which are biased by springs -82 to hold these members against the plate 80, said members extending through aperf tures 83 in the fixed plate I5.v A third gripper member 84 is pivotally mounted on a struck-down portion 85 of the xed plate |5 and is likewise biased by a spring 86 fastened to a bracket 81 formed integral with the plate I5. This gripper member is identical with membersv 80 and 8| and the c am surface makes contact with sunken surface 98 formed in a bracket 89 which is fixed to the side plates I2 and I3 and lies over and adjacent to the movable plate 80. The sunken or struck-down portion 88 projects through an aperture 90 of the movable plate 80 to provide a xed surface against which the gripper 84 may grip the paper strip, the same as between the grippers 8| and the movable plate 88. A large spindle 9| is xed to the side frame member I2 and is adapted torotatably support a paper supply roll 92 which may be held on the spindle and in alignment by any suitable method. The paper from the supply roll indicated at 92 is passed in front of the ribbon and type wheels and is separated from the ribbon by a ribbon shield 93 xed to the side frame and passes over roller 94 fixed to the side frame and under a gate 95 pivotally mounted on the sliding plate and from there the paper extends between the gripper members 80 .and 84 and their coacting plates and from thence extends out beyond the end of the plate where it is free to accumulate in the open space provided between the frame members as shown in Fig. 2.
The gate 95 is provided with an aperture 96 which renders the various recordings visible through a window 91 in the casing 98 and the transverse edge of the gate opposite the hinged edgeA acts as a shutter to cover the paper which is normally adjacent an aperture 99 in the covering case. The covering case 98 is provided with apertures at the lower rear end which are adapted to receive extensions |00 fixed to the base to hold it in position at its rear edge (Figs. 1 and 2)- and which is provided with a bracket I0| and a hook locking member I 02 which enter apertures |03 and |04 respectively in the base.

Upon further depression of the registration handle, the link |09 is moved downwardly as previously explained carrying the stud l1 downwardly and thus rotating the arm to oscillate the levers 1| and 12, as previously described. 'I'his causes the plates and 80 to be slid toward the operator and the camming action of the grippers grips the paper strip and moves it with the sliding plate. The sliding action of this plate removes the upper end of the gate 95, which has been previously termed a shutter, from in front of the aperture 99 and brings the printed registration that has previously been made in the, rst part of the same operation into view whereby the operator signs his name adjacent the recorded time and enters a check in the column designated In or Out in accordance with the operation he is making, namely, whether he is registering on entering the place of business or registering| on leaving the place of business. When the registration is completed and -the handle is released, it returns to itsnormal position and the shutterpis moved back to 4cover the aperture, thus preventing any disguration of the record by an operator who may come to register subsequently. On the return motion of the sliding plate and the shutter, the gripper 94 holds the paper from any "retrograde .movement" backward with said shutter.

In. a time recorder, a continuous record strip, type wheels and a movable platen for printing a record ,on said strip, an actuating arm for operating said platen to effect a printing operation on said record strip, means operated by said actuating arm after the printing operation for moving said record strip, said means including a U-shaped plate member and a flat plate member disposed on opposite sides of the record sheet, arcuate eccentric members carried by said U-shaped plate and adaptedto grip the record strip between said arcuate members and said flat plate member when said members are moved in the direction in which the record strip is to be fed.
