4 Claims.
My invention relates to a fountain brush and particularly to that type of fountain brush adapted for use in connection with a stencil sheet for marking, as for example, names :and addresses on packing cases or the like.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of the class referred to, which will be simple in construction, handy in operation, vand in which the ink will be eiectively sealed against leakage through the valve operating means.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one form of fountain brush made in accordance with my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation; Figure 2 is a section taken on the line 2 2 of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a side view orf one end of the casing with 'the valve cover detached; Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3, but looking at the opposite side; Figure 5 is an` enlarged View of some of the parts shown in Figure 2, the valve 20 being shown in open position; and Figure 6 is a section taken on the line 6--6 of Figure 3.
The casing comprises an approximately cylindrical handle I and an` integral annular valve housing 2 carried on one end thereof. The han- 2,3 dle is hollow to form an ink reservoir and the end opposite the valve housing is provided with ay screw cap 3, the removal of which permits the filling of the reservoir. The valve housing is provided, adjacent one side, With a web 4, a por- 39 tion of which intersects the end of the handle. In this intersecting portion is formed an opening 5 for the passage of ink :from the handle reservoir to a chamber 6 formed in one side of the housing. This chamber is closed by an annular diaphragm 35 'I of thin exible metal. The edge of the diaphragm is clamped between a shoulder 8 in the housing and the flange of the valve cover 9 so as to form a liquid-tight joint. The outer face of the cover is preferably provided with a pair of recesses Ill for engagement by a Spanner to tighten the cover.
Formed integral with the web 4 is a central hub II and -a radially extending boss I2, the latter terminating in a brush engaging plate I3. 4:, The axis of this boss, which determines the axis of the brush, is preferably arranged at a slightly obtuse angle to the axis of the handle, as shown; but the angle may be varied if desired. Formed in the hub II isa cylindrical passage I4 provided with a valve seat I5 and communieating through a reduced portion I6 with the chamber 6. Sliding in the passage I4 is a valve I 'I adapted to seat against the valve seat I5 and provided with a stem I8 projecting through the reduced portion I6 of the passage. The stem is (Cli -40) made smaller than the portion I6 but the difference in size, which is. somewhat exaggerated in the drawing, is very slight so as to prevent excessive flow of ink when the valve is opened. The rear end of the valve is counterbored to ac- 5 commodate a coil spring I9 hel-d in place by a cam plug which also serves to form a liquidtight closure for the `end of the passage.
In alignment with the'passage I4 an opening is formed in the cover 9 for the reception of an 10 operating button consisting oi an inner head 2| having a threaded stem 22 and an outer head or thumb piece 23 carrying a sleeve internally threaded to receive the stem (as shown in Figure 5).
The boss I2 is provided with a passage 24 opening intoy the passage I4 adjacent the valve seat. The lower end of the passage 24 is threaded to receive a nipple 25 having a collar 26 engaging with the ferrule 21 of the brush 28. A gasket 29 20 is placed between the ierrule and the plate I3 to form a tight joint. The nipple, which is provided with a passage for the ink, preferably extends downwardly some distance into the brush.
In the operation of my brush the parts are normally in the position shown in Figure 2, the valve I'I being rmly held on its seat by the spring I9 and the thumb piece 23 is held in the outer position by the resiliency of the diaphragm which is 30 placed a slight distance from the end of the stem IS. In this position the chamber 6 is closed from communication with the brush. The reservoir may now be filled with ink while the handle is held in vertical position by removal of the cap 3. The brush, being preferably held in the position shown in Figure 1, is now loaded with ink by opening the valve which is accomplished by pressure on the thumb piece 23. During the use of the device it is only necessary to occasionally open 40 the valve for short intervals to insure the proper charge of ink in the brush.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a fountain stencil brush, the combination with a hollow handle forming an ink reservoir, of a valve casing carried by said handle, a brush engaging plate carried by said casing and supporting a brush, the axis of said handle forming an obtuse angle with the axis of said brush, said casing including a web lying substantially in theplane dened by the axes of the handle and brush, a `diaphragm sealed valve in the casing controlling the flow of ink from the reservoir to the brush, and a sliding member extending at right angles to the plane of the web for actuating the valve.
2. In a fountain stencil brush, the combination with a hollow handle forming an ink reservoir, of a Valve casing formed integral therewith, said casing including a web intersecting the end of the handle and provided with an opening communicating therewith, a diaphragm secured at one side of the web and forming therewith a chamber supplied through said opening, aflud discharge passage communicating with the chamber through a second opening in the web, anda valve controlling said seco-nd opening, said valve cap at one side of said web, and an integral radial boss extending at right angles to the plate, said boss having formed therein a feed opening the axis of which forms an obtuse angle with the axis of the handle.
4. A fountain brush fitting comprising an integral handle, valve casing web, and brush engaging plate; said web lying in a plane including the axis of the handle, said plate lying in a plane at right angles to` that of Vtheweh-,a removable cap at one side of said web,'an integral radial looss` ex tending at right angles to the plate, said boss having formed therein a feed opening the axis of which forms an obtuse angle with the axis of the handle, and an integral hub at the side of the web opposite the cap, said hub having a valve opening communicating with the feed opening inthe boss.
