INVENTOR.
Patented July 13,y 1937 ETE STTES ABT Application September 1 Claim.
This invention relates to re hydrants.
The object of the invention is the production of a fire hydrant, which when frozen can easily have conduits formed through the ice therein, to
5 secure the immediate and eicient operation of the hydrant.
In the accompanying drawing, Fig. 1 repre sents a vertical cross section with portions in full lines of an exemplication of the improved line 2 2 and Figs. 3 and 4 indicate elevations of details.
'I'he hydrant is indicated to comprise the barrel casing having a horizontal flange at its lower end which bears on the outer surface of a Water main I8, and is fastened thereto by bolts 28. The said flange has an opening therethrough which forms a valve seat indicated at I4. A drain outlet fitting I'I, is provided for the lower end of the casing. A head for the barrel casing I, is indicated at 2. Said head has openings therethrough as shown, and is detachably fastened to the casing by bolts as indicated in Fig. 1. Pairs of horizontal slightly tapered outlets 30, extend from the barrel casing. I, near its top end.
An operating shaft is indicated with the upper cylindrical member 3, having the longitudinal threaded opening 4. The member 3 at its upper end is indicated having the head 23 which joins with a disc ange indicated in the drawing. A stuffing box 5 extends from the lower face of the head 2, and through which the member 3 extends. A collar is fastened to the member 3 adjacent to the lower face of the stuffing box 5. A valve stem is shown with its upper threaded portion 9 which is in threaded engagement with the threaded opening 4. A square portion I for the valve stem extends from the portion 9. Collars I3 and 25 are provided to said square portion I0. The lower end of the square portion I0 joins with a threaded cylindrical portion as shown in Fig. 1. A valve I is supported on said threaded cylindrical portion by means of the nut I6. A web I2 having a square opening is shown in the barrel casing I. The said square portion I0 extends through the opening of the web I2. A socket wrench 2| is provided for the head 23.
hydrant; Fig. 2 shows a section of Fig. 1 on the i 4, 1935, Serial No. 39,102
A slightly tapered, spirally grooved, tubular vertical shaft 24, is indicated with the cap 1, at its upper end and from the latter extends the head 8. A screw plug 21 is provided for the lower end of the shaft 24. Spiral groove 32 is indicated on the outer surface of the shaft 24. The said shaft 24, extends through the head 2, into the barrel casing I, and the cap l, is in threaded engagement with the head 2.
For the horizontal outlets 30 are indicated the short slightly tapered spirally grooved horizontal shafts 6, having the caps 'I with the heads S. The spiral grooves for the shafts 6 are shown at 32, Fig. 3.
Hose connections are indicated at 22 for the outlets 30.
The operation of the invention is as follows:
When the water 26, in the casing I, is frozen, the cap like l, of the spirally grooved vertical shaft 24, is unscrewed from the head 2. Then the head 8 of the cap l, is struck with a hammer and the like. By this means the spirally grooved shaft 24, can be lifted from frozen water or ice 33, and there will be left a conduit for water, like 3|. nected to the head 2, to coact with the water conduit produced or an auxiliary cap like 29, may be screwed to the head 2. Also the short slightly tapered spirally grooved horizontal shafts 6, may be removed from the frozen water or ice 33, as described for the shaft 24, and hose connections connected to the horizontal outlet 30, as indicated at 22.
It is to be understood that in addition to the hose connection for the conduit 3|, a similar hose connection may be connected to the head 2, for the parallel conduit made by the shaft 24, which in the drawing is shown in the ice of the casing. In fact hose connections may be applied for the two vertical outlet conduits that are produced, and four hose connections may be connected for the four horizontal outlet conduits like 30.
Having described my invention I claim:
In a fire hydrant, an outlet cap having a spirally grooved tapering shaft connected thereto for the purpose set forth.
HUGH THOMAS DUNN.
A hose connection like 22, may then be con- Cil
