Description
E. L. BARKERv WELL HEAD Filed sept. 12. 193e July. 13, 1937.-
n VPatented July 13, 1937` UNITEDA STATES IWIENTA OFFICE Application elnxer No. 100,409
This invention relates to a well head and has particular relation to novel means for forming a uid tight joint between'the casing head and hanger as well as between the head and hanger 45 assembly and the Christmas tree adapter which supports the Christmas tree on the head.
It is an object of the invention to provide a casing head having a hanger, seat therein with a' hanger on the seat and an adapter on the head l and a novel type of seal ring bridging the joint between the hanger and the head and forming a fluid tight joint with the adapter.
It is another object of the invention to provide l a Well head with means for sealing all of the o joints between the casing head and hanger as well as between the head and hanger assembly and the Christmas tree adapter. With the above and other objects in view the invention has particular relation to certain novel figures of construction, arrangement of parts -and use, ex-
amples of which are given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing Whereinz- 1 Figure 1 shows a side elevation of the head. Figure 2 shows a vertical sectional view thereof,
and
trating a modified form of the head. i
Referring more particularly to the drawing wherein like numerals of reference designate the same parts in each of the figures, the numeral I designates a casing head having an inside downwardly tapering seat 2. K
Numeral 3 designates a tubular hanger whose upper end is ared to conform to the shape of and to closely fit the seat 2.
The head is adapted to be connected to the upper end of the well casing 4 and the lower end of the hanger is threaded for connection to the upper end of the well tubing 5 which is suspended from the hanger.
The upper end of the hanger is approximately iiush with the upper end of the head and said upper ends have the respective annular grooves 5 6 and l on opposite sides of the joint between the hanger and head.
'I'he upper end of the head has an annular outwardly extending flange 8 and aligned above this ange there is a similar outwardly extended ow pipe may be connected.r The underside of the Christmas tree adapter is provided with an 55 annular groove I2. Y
Figure 3` shows a vertical sectional view illusange 9 of the Christmas tree adapter I0' to which a conventional Christmas tree Il or other 'I'here is a seal ring I3 whose upper end terminates in an annular apex I4 which is seated in the groove I2. The lower end of the seal ring I3 is formed with the annular inner and outer legs I5, I6, which are seated in the respective grooves 5 6 and 1, whereby the joint between the hanger and head is broken.
The flanges 8 and 9 are secured together by means of the bolts I1 which pass therethrough.
In the form shown in Figure 3 the casing head 10 Ia has a downwardly tapering seat 2a. but its inner wall, above and beneath said seat is approximately cylindrical. In this form the hanger 3a is externally shaped to conform to the shape of and to iit closely within the head and to be l5 supported on the seat 2a and is provided to support the wall tubing 5. l
In this form the upper end of the hanger 3a, has two grooves 6 andthe upper end of the head has two grooves 1, said pairs of grooves 6 and 1 20 being annular and arranged on opposite sides of the joint between the hanger and head. In this type of well head the Christmas tree adapter l0 is employed and is secured on the head Ia in the same manner as shown in Figures 1 and 2. The 25 underside of the adapter of this form has two annular grooves I2 and the seal ring I3 has two upper apexes or legs which fit in grooves I2 and two pairs of depending legs I5- and I6 which fit in the corresponding pair of grooves 6 and I thus 30 forming a very effective seal for the joints of the f well head assembly.
The drawing and description disclose what are now considered to be preferred forms of the invennen by way of uiustration only while the 35 broad principle of the invention will be dened by the appended claims.
What I claim is: i
1. A well head comprising a casing head having an inside seat, a tubing hanger on the seat, the upper end of the head and hanger assembly having annular grooves one on'each side of the joint between the hanger and head, a Christmas tree adapter secured to the head and having an annular groove in its lower end and a single seal ring having an upper edge seated in the groove in the adapter and a pair of lower legs with edges seating in the grooves in the head and hanger respectively.
2. A well head comprising a casing head adapted for connection to a casing `in a we1l,a tubing hanger seated in the head, said head and hanger each having a groove around its upper end, a seal ring having annular depending legs seated in 5 5 to beconnected to a casing in a well having av plurality of grooves around its upper end, a tubing hanger seated in the head and having a plurality of grooves around its upper end, a seal ring having depending legs seated in the respective 10 grooves, a ow line connection secured on the casing head and having a groove around its lower end in which the seal r'ing is also seated.
4. A well head comprising a casing head adapted to be connected to the upper end of a well casing.
l5 a, tubing hanger seated in the head, the head and hanger each having a plurality of annular grooves at their upper ends, a seal ring having depending legs seated in said grooves, a ilow line connection on the casing head having a plurality of grooves 20 around its lower end said seal ring having annular upstanding legs seated in the grooves of said connection.
5. A well head comprising acasing head, a tubing hanger therein, an adapter clamped on the casing head, and a single three-point seal ring clamped between the adapter and the head and hanger, the ring having a top edge which seals against the adapter and a pair of bottom edges one of which seals against the casing head and the other of which seals against the hanger. 6, A well head comprising a casing head, a
' tubing hanger seated therein, a ilow line clamping member clamped to the casing head, and a single seal ring between the clamping member and the head and hanger, the seal ring bridging the joint betweenthe head and the hanger and having spaced legs which engage the head and hanger respectively and an upper edge which is engaged by said clamping member.
