The invention relates to electric Welders oi that type known as gun Welders and comprising a pair of electrodes mounted on a portable tool and pressed towards each other against the intervening work by iiuid pressure. The welding current is conveyed to the tool through cables and the pressure uid through a connecting hose, these parts being sufficiently flexible. There is also a handle connected with the cylinder oi the fluid motor `for actuating the movable electrode and a yoke connecting with the stationary electrode which provides clearance for the insertion ci the work.
in the use of tools of this type the dexibility of the cables and hose will permit the workman to adjust the tool to different positions upon the work, but diiculty is sometimes encountered through interference of the yoke. Thus, in going from one side to another of the worlr, it is necessary to twist the ltool to bring the yoke in proper position and in doing so considerable ei tort is required of the operator to overcome the resistance oi the cables. It is the object ci the present invention to overcome this diculty through a construction permitting oi the rotation of the yoke without the necessity oi 'twisting 'the portion or the tool to which. the cables and hose are connected. The invention, thereiorev consists in the novel construction as hereinalter set forth.

My improved tool comprises a cylinder1 A con=l taining a piston B connected to the rod C which passes out through an aperture in the head D and carries at its outer end the fitting E for holding the electrode F. The cooperating electrode G is arranged in alignment with the electrode El and engages a C-shaped yoke H which is mounted on the head D. A handle I projects laterally from the cylinder A being preferablyintegrel therewith and an electric push button switch J is mounted in this handle for convenient operation. This switch controls an electrically operated valve (not shown) which supplies the fluid to the cylinder A through a hose K connected to the nipple A'. The piston B is formed. oi a dielectric material, such as bakelite, and the sealing cup B' is also a non-conductor. The rod C is also insulated from the cylinder by passing out through an insulator bushing L in the head D. Current is supplied to the tool through cables respectively connected to a nipple A.s on the cylinder A and a nipple E on the ttlng E. Thus the electrodes and @l and their connecting parte are insulated iront each other so that the only path of the current will be through the work inserted between these electrodes.
The tool as thus ier described is similar to conm structions that have heretoiore been used with the exception of the manner oi connecting the yolre l-l with the head D. is heretofore constructed, the yolze is rigid with the trarne oi the tool so that in passing `trom one side to au on posite side of the work, it is necessary to twist the tool and its connecting cables. My improved construction avoids this necessity by revolubly mountmg the yolze upon the head D. However., as the current conducted through the yoke to the electrode f3 it must .through the swivel joint between said yolre and the head D. The head D has projecting therefrom an en tension D' which at its outer end has a ilange lill. As specicedly shownv the extension D' is in@ tegral with the head D and the flange M is se cured thereto by a threaded hub portion M engaging a threaded extension Dn oi reduced dialneter. The yolie Il ls swivcled upon the portion D', preferably with intervening roller bear- N, nod is retained by the harige M. The rolls oi the roller hearing are iorrned oi e highly conductive materiel, such as bronze, which reduces the ohuoic resistance to the passage ol current therethrough and which also is non-magnetic to avoid any magnetic r slstance'. The annular portion 1li-l of the yolre which surrounds the oors tion D is preierably provided with c, bushing N and a sleeve N2 surrounds the portion D. 'These members are proportioned to torni s. fairly tight lit so as to maintain good electrical contact ior the ilow oi current therethrough. Thus, the yolre is retained in pontion by the ange member M and is free to be revolved by reason o the roller bearings, while at the same time current conveyed iroin the nipple A2 through the roller bearing to the yoke and thence to the electrode G. e. metallic bushing O is placed between the rod C and the insulator bushing, and 'the cylinder n is preferably provided with. a bushing A3 which may be replaced to compensate for weer. A spring P normally retracts the piston B to separate the electrodes G and F, while the fluid pressure controlled by the switch J is used to press the electrode F against the work.
'With the construction as described, the op= f erator can turn the yoke H independently from any rotation or twisting of the tool which facilitates the performance of the work and lessens effort on`the part ofthe workman.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. An electric welder of the gun type including a handled member, a cable connection, a yoke for embracing the work and a swivel connection between said yoke and cable connection permitting rotative adjustment of one relative to the other.
2.. An electric welder of the gun type including a handled member carrying the presser electrode, a yoke for embracing the Work and carrying the cooperating electrode, a cable connection and swivel means interposed between said cable connection and yoke permitting rotative adjustment of one relative to the other.
3. An electric welder of the gun type including a handled member, a presser electrode carried thereby, fluid actuating means for said presser electrode, a iluid supply conduit extending to a source of fluid under pressure, cable connections respectively to said handled member and electrode, a yoke for embracing the work and supporting a cooperating electrode and a swivel connection between said yoke and handled member permitting relative rotative adjustment thereof and also constituting an electrical connection therebetween.
4. An electric Welder of the gun type including a handled member, a presser electrode carried thereby and insulated therefrom, cable connections to said presser electrode and said handled member, a cooperating electrode, a yoke for supporting said cooperating electrode spaced from said presser electrode and adapted to embrace the work, and a swivel connection between said yoke and handled member permitting relative rotative adjustment thereof and also constituting an 'electrical connection therebetween.
5. An 'electric Welder of the gun type comprising a iiuid cylinder, a handle connected thereto, a piston in said cylinder, an electrode actuated by said piston and insulated from said cylinder, cable connections between a source of electrical current and said electrode and cylinder respectively, a flexible conduit for conveying uid from a source of supply to said cylinder, a cooperating electrode spaced from said rst mentioned electrode, a yoke for supporting said cooperating electrode and adapted to embrace the work, and a swivel connection between said yoke and said cylinder constituting also an electrical connection therebetween.
6. An electric Welder of the gun type comprising a fluid motor cylinder, a piston therein, an electrode actuated by said piston and insulated from said cylinder, a uid supply conduit for said cylinder, cable connections between a source of electrical current and said electrode and cylinder respectively, an extension of said cylinder, a yoke having an annular portion surrounding said extension, a rollexmbearing between said extension and yoke constituting a swivel and also an electrical connection therebetween and a cooperating electrode carried by said yoke in spaced relation to said rst mentioned electrode.
