(01. 194-91) My invention relates toimprovements in means for controlling the delivery of coins or checks to .check controlled apparatus, and the same has for its object to provide a simple, reliable and efficient device which serves to arrest various counterfeit or spurious coins or slugs inserted and to return the same to the operator and to prevent slugs or like devices to various tests and for preventing passage of checks or the like to the check controlled apparatus upon failure of such check to meet the test or tests imposed thereon.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a device of the character specified in which mechanically actuated means are included for releasing the defective slugs or checks lodged within said device as a result of the failure of such checks to satisfy the tests imposed thereon.

Other objects will in part be obvious, and in part be pointed out hereinafter.
To the'attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claims. v

The forward shaft section |9 carries the coin con-'- trolled mechanism 10 and is rotatably supported in the bridging member l'land retained against axial movement therein by said mechanism Ill and the knob I8. The rear end. of the shaft section l9 receives the forward section 2| of the drum |2 which is provided for this purpose with an axial sleeve 23. The shaft portion i9 and drum section 2| are keyed to each other against relative rotation by suitable means such as the flats 24 By the construction above described, the shaft section l9 together with the mechanism and parts disposed thereon may be readily disengaged from the drum section 2| and withdrawn from the casing of the vending machine.
The "rear drum section 22 interfits the front in complementary relation thereto and is provided with an axial collar 25 at the rear thereof adapted to receive the forward end of the shaftsection 20 which enters the sleeve 23 of the forward drum section 2|. The drum section 22 is capable of being slid along the shaft section 20 to vary the length of the pockets I 4, and is secured in any adjusted position by means of the set screws 26.

The forward hub 34 is adapted for the mounting of a forward member or element 43 of the control mechanism l0. Such element 43 is provided 44 therein for receiving the hub 34 and includes a disk portion 45 having coin receiving pockets 46 formed upon the rearface' thereof. The pockets 46 are of arcuate formation adapted to receive and hold therein coins of various denominations, such as a one cent piece or a five cent piece (a nickel). The pockets 46 correspond in number with the number of successive locking positions of the mechanism and are disposed in. predetermined relation to the successive centering positions to allow the coins to drop vertically into the same by gravity and to discharge any coin therein upon movement of the actuator a complete step in a clockwise direction.
The forward face of the member '43 has formed thereon a ratchet portion or element 41 co-operating with a detent 48 for preventing rotation of the mechanism in a counter-clockwise direction. Thg detent 48 is preferably pivotally mounted at 49 to the frame member I! co-axially with the pivot 40 of the dog 39, and is retained in engaging relation with the ratchet 41 by the spring 50. The ratchet 4' is provided'with more teeth relationship being three to one in the embodiment of the invention illustrated, to allow rotation of the actuator in a clockwise direction a part 'of a complete step withoutthe detent 48 dropping into the next succeeding dwell of the ratchet, for a purpose hereinafter described, The member 43 is preferably keyed to or interlocked with the intermediate member 30 by forming lugs 52 upon the hub 34 adapted to be re celved into corresponding slots or recesses 53 formed in the member 43.

The detent 59 is retained in engag'ement with the ratchet 3| by the spring 6|,. and'is provided with an intermediate step or abutment 62 on the lower'edge' thereof adapted to engage and ride upon the dwells 63 of the ratchet 3| intermediate the teeth 32. In the normal position of the mechanism the abutment 82 engages an intermediate portion of a dwell 88 to allow a limited or slight rotation of the/mechajnism in a clockwise direction and return before the abutment 52 engages the next succeeding step of the ratchet 3|. The detent 59 has a laterally projecting pin 54 extending transversely over the coin receiving means 46 in position tobe actuated by the coins therein as hereinafter described. 1
The disk member 54 is retained in position upon the hub 35 by means of the sleeve or retaining member 55 secured to the hub 85 and shaft I9 by the transverse pin 65 which also serves tosecure the member 88 against rotation relative to the shaft I9., I
The disk member 54 serves as means for supporting the detent 59 disengaged from the ratchet 3| to allow a complete revolution of the operating means when the detent is actuated by a coin of greater diameter, such as the nickel, the periphery 51 of said disk 54 serving as a dwell upon which the nose 58 of thedetent rides during said revolution. Said detent disengages said dwell 51 and drops into the clearance space 55 at the completion of the revolution to again engage the ratchet 3| and lock the mechanism;
For this purpose, the disk 54 has a yieldable slip connection 61 with the member 88 to allow the member 54 to rotate with the operating means when the detent 59 is actuated to clear said member, andto allow relative movement of the operating means when said detent is actuated by a coin of lesser diameter, such as acent piece. to clearthe ratchet 3| but not the disk54.
The slip connection 51 is such as to lock the disk 54 to the member Si in a succession of relative positions corresponding in number with the ratchet steps 82. As shown, the ratchet member 3i upon the back face thereof is provided with a series of recesses 58 disposed in corresponding relation to the steps 82 while the disk 54 has an opening 59 therein adapted to register with the recesses 58 in the successive positions. The open-- ing 59 receives a locking .element I8 retained in place by a leaf spring II and adapted to enter the successive recesses 88 to lock the parts together, for joint rotation.
i As shown the clearance space 58 is sized to allow in each of the locking positions of the disk 54 limited movement of the operating means in a clockwise direction and return without the nose 58 of the detent 59 engaging the abutment I! at the end of the clearance space. The successive locking positions of the slip connection 81 are lo cated to lock the disk 54 to ratchet 8I with said abutment 12 in the same position relative to the successive locking steps or positions. When the detent 59 is elevated by a coin of smaller diameter upon rotation of the operating means, the nose 88 of the detent engages the abutment I! to disengage the slip connection 81 and retain the disk 54 against movement with the operating means, the parts relatively moving to interlock in the next succeeding relative position thereof ready for operation upon insertion of another coin.
The coins for controlling the release of the mechanism l8 are controlled in their passage'to the mechanism by a fraud preventing device and scavenger 18 particularly adapted for coins of two diflerent denominations to be delivered to the mechanism I8.
The device I8 includes a front member or plate "having a depending portion 15 and secured through said depending portion I to the bridging member II by means of a screw 18 in position above the coin, pockets 48; A co-woperating member or plate II disposed at the rear of the plate I4 is pivoted at its upper edge to the upper edge wardly relative to the fixed plate, said members being provided for this purpose with the ears 18 receiving the pivot pin 18 and being normally retained in closed relation by means of a coil spring 88 upon said pivot pin 19 with its ends engaging the plates in the usual manner.
The two members 14 and II when in closed relation form the coin guiding passages 8| and 82 at opposite sides of the medial line thereof dimensioned to correspond with the diameter and thickness of the cent and of the nickel respectively. The two coin passages 8| I and 82 are separated from each other by a vertical rib or spacer 83 preferably formed upon the plate I4 at 'the medial line thereof. The cent passage 8| is defined by means of the upper and lower parallel rib or spacer portions 84 and 85, one. of said ribs being formed upon the inner face of the member I4 and the other thereof upon the corresponding face of the member 11, and both extending towards the medial line of the device at a downward inclination. The rib member 84 is spaced from the contiguous end of its plate I4 to provide an opening 88 between the plates for the insertion of the coin. The rib 85 extends from the contiguous end of the member II below the coin slot 88 and terminates at its inner end short of the medial rib 88 to form the downward passage extension 81 therebetween. The nickel passage 82 is defined by similarly arranged ribs 84 and 85' and'includes the coin opening Figs. 5 and 6, to compensate for the greater -thickness of the nickel. In practice, the coin inlets or slots 88 and 88 are adapted to register or align with corresponding slots in the usual casing which receives the mechanism. I The plate I4 below the medial rib 88 substantially at the juncture of thedepending portion with the body of the plate has a part 88 thereon forming anvil portions 8I' and 82 disposed respectively at the bases of the passage extensions 88 and 88 in the paths of the respective coins, and extending downwardly and outwardly to points contiguous to the corners 88 and 84 of the lower edges 88 and 81 of the plate I4 in position to deliver the coins to the coin weighers 88 and 88.
The weighers 88 and 88 are pivoted at I88 intermediate their ends to the lower ends ofthe I8I depending ,from the movable plate 11. Each weigher 88 and 88 has an adjustable weight I82 threaded upon the outer end thereof and securedin adjusted position by the set screw I88 to slightly overbalance the inner ends I84 of the weighers 88 and 88 and cause the same to normally engage the lower edges of the plates I4 and II in position to receive the coins rolling from the ledges 8i and 88. The upper sides of the coin carrying portions I84 of the weighers are preferably curved longitudinally to correspond with the curvatures of the periphery of the coin to be received thereby and are provided with longitudinally extending tracks or grooves I85 (Fig. 8) in which the coin rides. The cent weigher 88 is adjusted to swing downwardly to the lowermost position shown in brokeniines of the plate 14 for swinging movement outthereon to the common outlet passage I08 formed (Fig. 7) when a cent of standard weight is deposited thereon while the nickel weigher 99 is adjusted to swing downwardly to a similar position when a. nickel of standard weight is deposited thereon. Discharge of coins from between the plates at the ends thereof is prevented by forming the vertical ribs I 06 and Hill upon the plate TI below the ribs 85 and 85 which close the coin passages at these points.
The weighers when depressed deliver the coins thetray extension I09 is secured. The passage I99 as thus .formed has an inlet H2 through which the cent passes andinlet H3 at the opposite side through which the nickel passes and the common discharge outlet Ild located vertically above the coin pockets 95 for discharge therein. Slugs of magneticmaterial, otherwise contorm ing to the dimensional or weighing tests imposed upon the inserted check or slug, are held within the device by the permanentmagnets I I5 and II 6 .located to have their fields concentrated in the lower portion of the coin-passages immediately above the weighers 98 and 99 in position to attract the magnetic slugs as'the momenta thereof are absorbed by the anvil ledges 9| and 92, thereby taking the weight of the magnetic slugs from the weighers 98 and 99. The fields of the magnets H5 and H6 are adjusted in strength to allow the slugs held thereby to be released and discharged when the movable plate Ill is actuated.
In the present invention the coins or checks inserted at 86 and 88 travel inwardly and downwardly towards the medial rib 83, and then drop downwardly upon theledges 9| and 92 which absorb the momentum ofthe devices or reduce their velocity and impose a change of direction of travel thereon to enable the checks to roll onto the weighers 98 and 99 without appreciable momentum so that the weighers reflect more exactly the true weight of the various slugs or checks which pass thereto.
Incase a slug or check inserted in the appa ratus to operate the vending machine lodges in the scavenger 13 no proper coin will be seated in a coin pocket 46 for releasing the detent 59, and hence the machine cannot be operated to dispense the commodity.
In the present invention however the controlmechanism I0 is designed as above described to allow a limited movement of the operating means II in a clockwise direction from each centered position and the returnthereof to said position for actuating the scavenger 13. When the knob I8 is released the spring controlled dog 39 by a camming action returns the mechanism to the centered position and the spring acts to close the scavenger.
In the discharging or releasing operation of the scavenger I3, slugs or other checks which lodge in the scavenger immediately below the slot openings 86 and 88 upon the ledges and 85 are deflected rearwardly as the same fall forwardly from the saidledges by the rearwardly directed deflecting portions I20 formed on the lower outer edges of the fixed plate 10. The portion forming the anvil edge 92 for the nickel is likewise provided with a beveled deflecting surface I2I for insuring proper deflection of a good nickel into the return chute H0 in certain cases as hereinafter more fully described.
The fixed plate 10 is also provided with rib portions I22 extending from the deflectors I20 upbharge into the control mechanism by means of a tool or other instrument inserted surreptitiously through the slot openings 86 or 88 and manipulated therein, and prevent the insertion of such a tool or instrument into the apparatus for actuating the weighers when a slug too light to swing the same is located thereon. The function of the parts I20 and I22 is such that the tool when it engages the same forces the plates apart sulficiently to deflect the tool ating parts and cause the lodged in the scavenger.
The apparatus embodying the present invention also includes means I24 for insuring delivery of full value in commodity upon the insertion of each nickel into the apparatus.
In the coin controlled mechanism herein disclosed when a nickel is inserted the detent 59 is elevated to clear the member 54 and to ride upon the periphery 51 thereof and to be released or disengaged from the ratchet3I. for a complete revolution of the operating means before again engaging the ratchet 3I to lock the mechanism. If an operator should insert a nickel and only rotate the knob I8 through a part of a revolution, say to deliver the commodity from two or three rotor I2, the detent 59 remains upon the member 51 disengaged and will so remain until the revolution is completed. If a second nickel, in the absence of the protective means I24, should now be inserted in the' apparatus, it would pass through the scavenger and into one of the pockets 46 to be retained in the apparatus. Since, the operating means can only be rotated through the remaining unfinished part of the revolution before again locking, the second operator will not then receive full value for the nickel inserted, but only the quantity remaining duefrom the last operation.
The means I24 to this end includes an arm I25 pivoted at one end I 261to the front face of the scavenger member H at oneside thereof and away from the operdischarge of any slug above the-detent 59. The opposite end of the arm I25 is directed inwardly to form afinger I21 riding in the arcuate slot I29 registering wi vertical passage extension 89 of the nickel coin chute or passage, and terminating at its lower en i a recess I29 formed in the anvil portion 92. The
. a relatively loose pivotal connection I33 with an intermediate portion of the arm I25 at its opposite end.
The finger I2I in the lowermost position thereof registers with the recess I29 to allow a nickel to be deflected by the anvil 92 onto the weigher 99 for delivery to the control mechanism I9. The resultingactuation of the detent 59 actuates the arm I25 to position the finger I21 at the upper end of the slot I28 in the path of any second nickel inserted as shown in broken lines at A (Fig. 4) and prevent its passage to the control mechanism. The second operator must therefore complete the revolution of the operating means through the remaining dispensing steps and I therefore obtain for his own use the commodity due from the previous operation. When the second nickel is inserted and retained in the scavenger as at A by the finger I21, the rotation of the operating means through the next succeeding step to complete the previous revolution actuates the centering dog 42 to open the scavenger and cause return of the second nickel, said nickel in dropping glancing ofl of the beveled edge I2I to insure delivery thereof into the return chute mi.
The operation of the scavenger or coin controlling means 13 will be largely obvious from the foregoing description.
When a cent is inserted at 85, the check if of the required diameter and thickness rolls down the passage or chute BI and into the vertical ex tension 83 thereof into impact with the anvil 9| which reduces its velocity. The check then rolls in the reverse direction onto the weigher 98 which then swings downwardly to the position shown in broken lines (Fig. 'I), if the check is of the required minimum weight, to deliver the check or cent to the control mechanism. A similar measurement. control and weighing of the nickel is effected in the coin passage or chute 82 and the extension thereof to deliver said nickel in like manner to the control mechanism. The magnets H5 and I I6 serveto attract and hold any magnetic slugs inserted immediately above the anvil portions and weighers in position to be readily released upon actuation of the scavenger.
Defective or other checks or slugs lodging or being retained in the scavenger passages or upon the weighers 99 and 99 are released therefrom upon limited rotation of'the operating. means in the manner above described.
When a cent piece drops into one of the coin pockets 46, it is moved by the operating means into engagement with the, pin .94 to lift the detent 59 out of engagement with the ratchet II, the coin clearing said pin detent to drop back and the next succeeding position. During this operation the nose 58 of the detent 59 engages the abutment I2 of-the disk mem r 54 to retain the same against movement with the operating means,'the slip connection 61 releasing to allow of second denomination until the in time to allow the. lock the mechanism in such relative movement. During this movement the drum I2 rotates one step to discharge a measured quantity of the commodity into the usual chute for deliveryto the purchaser. The ratchet 3| and disk 54 then interlock in the next succeeding relative position.
When a nickel drops into one of the pockets 51, upon rotation of the actuator I8, the larger coin elevates the detent 59 to a greater extent to clear the disk 54 and to drop upon the dwell 51 thereof as the coin clears the pin 94. Hence, the detent 59 remains disengaged from the ratchet ii to allow a complete revolution of the rotor I2 and disk 54, the detent dropping into the clearthe member I24 prevents the insertion of a second nickei before the revolution is completed.
The apparatus or mechanism III which constitutes the subject matter of my co-pending application filed, December 28, 1935, Serial No. 56,558, is responsive to coins of different values, to release said mechanism for rotation of the operating means in one direction through a single step or a succession of steps for delivering one or more measured quantities of the commodity or goods corresponding to the value of the coin inserted, the apparatus resetting or resuming normal position after each complete operation, without regard to the value of the coin inserted, ready for operation by the next coin, and requiring only a single revolution of the actuator I8 to deliver the maximum quantity of commodity.
The scavenger of fraud preventing device 13 constituting the subject matter of the present application insures against malicious, surreptitious or other operation of the vending apparatus by means of slugs, defective coins or other devices which might clog, jam or otherwise damage said mechanism or obtain the delivery of goods without value received. Said scavenger is second nickel before a previous nickel operation' is completed.
Having thus described claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination of a check controlled mechanism including a locking member actuated by a coin of one denomination for allowing a step movement of said mechanism, and means for retaining said locking member when actuated by a coin of seconddenomination disengaged for movement of said mechanism'through a succession of steps, with means including separate passages for the passage of the coins to said locking member, and means actuated by said locking member for obstructing the passage of the coin movement through a succession of steps is completed.
2. The combination of a check controlled mechanism including locking means actuated by a coin of one denomination for allowing a step movement of the mechanisi and means for retaining ,said locking means when actuated by a coin of a second denomination disengaged for movement of said mechanism through a succession of steps. with coin delivering means including relatively movable members forming coin my invention, what I rotations of said mechanism, means for retaining said ratchet means disengaged for rotation of said mechanism through a succession of steps, and means for centering said mechanism in the successive positions, with means including passages for delivering coins of diiferent denominations to said ratchet means, means for obstructing one of said coin passages when said ratchetmeans is retained disengaged by said second named means, and means controlled by said centering means for actuating said coin delivering means for the return of devices lodged therein. i
4. The combination of a check controlled mechanism including ratchet means for allowing a step movement of said mechanism,and means for retaining said ratchet means disengaged for a complete revolution of said mechanism, with coin delivering means including members pivoted together for opening movement and forming coin passages therebetween, an arm pivoted to one of said membersand extending into one of said passages normally in position to clear the same, means for actuating said arm from said ratchet means for obstructing the passage controlled thereby, and means for opening said pivoted members by the operation or said mechanism.
5. The combination of a check controlled mechanism including a pivoted locking member, and means for retaining said locking member disengaged for a complete revolution of said: mechanism, with a pair of members pivoted together for opening movement'and forminga coin passage therebetween, an arm pivoted to the outside of one, of said last named members and extending into said passage normally -in position to clear connection between said locking member and said arm-for obstructing said pasthe same, a
sage when said locking member is retained disengaged by said first named means, and means for actuating said pivoted members by the operation of said mechanism.
6. A device of the character described comprising a pair of members pivoted together at the upper edges thereof and forminga coin passage therebetween, the fixed one of said members having a portion forming an anvil at the base of said passage, and a slot therein formed in part in said anvil, a pivoted member associated with said first mentioned members for receiving the coin from said anvil, an arm pivoted to said fixed member and having a finger extending into said slot normally below the plane of'said anvil, and means for actuatingsaid armfor moving said finger into coin obstructing position in said passage. a
7. A device of the character described-com prising relatively movable members forming a check measuringpassage therebetween, an anvil portion at the base of said passage, a pivoted weigher at the lower edges of said members forming a closure for the base of said passage beyond said anvil portion, said weigher serving to retain an underweight check received from'said anvil portion in positionbetween said members, and means below said anvil portion having a discharge passage therein and depending from one of said members at the end of said weigher for receiving the check upon the depression of the weigher thereby.
8. A device of the character described comprising relatively movable members forming a check measuring passage therebetween, an anvil portion at the lower end of said passage, a pivoted weigher disposed to receive the check from said anvil,
and a magnet having the field thereof concentrated at the lower portion of said passage above said weigher.
9. A device of the character described comprising a fixed member, a. member pivoted thereto for swinging movement, said members having portions upon the inner'faces thereof forming a coin passage and a coin inlet at the top thereof, said portions including a coin supporting rib upon said pivoted member disposed below said coin extending angularly from the lower edge thereof and underlying said coin supporting rib below said coin inlet. 1

A device of the character described comprising a pair of members pivoted together at the upper edges thereof for opening movement of one member relative to the other, said members inlet, and said fixed member having a portion 4 below said inlet opening, and the second of said members having a portion extending angularlyfrom the lower edge thereof and underlying said last named rib below said coin inlet and a rib upon the inner face of the second member extending upwardly and inwardlyfrom said angu-.
larly extending portion and underlying the inner portion of the rib on said first member.
11. A device of the character described comprising relatively movable plates having downwardly and inwardly extending ribs and a vertical extending medial rib forming separate coin passages, anvil portions formed at the base of said medial rib at opposite sides thereof, and pivoted weighers for receiving checks from 'said anvil porv tions.
12. A device of the character described comprising a fixed plate, a plate pivoted thereto, said plates having passages therebetween for measuring checks of different sizes, pivoted weighers upon the pivoted plate at the discharge ends of said passages, and a-common outlet from said pivoted weighers.
13. A device of the character described comprising a fixed plate, having a projecting lower part including anvil portions, a plate pivoted to said fixed plate at the upper edges of said plates, said plates having check passages therebetween in communication with said anvil portions, pivoted weighers at the lower edges of said movable plate extending towards said anvil portions, and a closure member seated upon said projecting lower part and forming therewith a common outformed at'the lower center of said plates, and
weighers pivotally mounted upon said movable plate and associated with anvil portions.

A device of the character described comprising a fixed plate, a plate hinged thereto at the contiguous upper edges 01' said plates, said plates having check controlling passagesthere- 40, ing passages therebetween between at opposite sides of the vertical medial line thereof, protective means at the lower portions of certain of said plates, and pivoted weighers at the lower ends of said passages below said protective means.
16. A device offthe character described comprising a pair of members pivoted together at the upper edges thereof for opening movement of one member relative to the other, said members forming a coin passage inlet at the top thereof and including a longitudinally extending passage forming rib upon the inner face of one of said members below said coin inlet, and the other member having means thereon underlying said rib and forming therewith a succession of barriers co-operating to prevent undue manipulation of the device by an object inserted between said members through said coin inlet.
17. A device of the character described comprising a pair of members pivoted together at the upper edges thereof for opening movement of one member relative to the other, said members forming a coin passage therebetween and a coin inlet at the top thereof and including a longitudinally extending passage forming rib upon the inner face of one of said members below said coin inlet, coin weighing means movably mounted below said device in operative relation to the discharge end of said passage, and means on saidother member underlying said rib and forming therewith a succession of barriers co-operating to prevent access of an object inserted through said coin inlet to said weighing means.
18. A device of the character described comprising a pair of plates pivoted together at the upper edges thereof for opening movement of one plate relative tothe other, said plates havfor measuring checks of different sizes, pivoted weighers upon one of said plates at the discharge ends of said passages, and a common outlet from said pivoted weighers.
19. A device of the character described comprising a fixed member, a member pivoted thereto at the upper edges of said members, said members having ribs' upon forming separate coin passages open at the bases of said members, weighing members plvotally mounted upon the pivoted member at the lower' edges of said members in positions to normally form closures for the open bases of said passages, and a portion depending from said fixed member v between said weighing members and having a.
therebetween and a coin the inner faces thereof common outlet provided with openings at the sides thereof towards said weighing members for receiving coins therefrom upon depression of said weighing members by the coins.
20. A device of the character described comprising a pair of members pivoted together at the upper edges thereof for opening movement of one member relative to the other, said members forming a coin passage therebetween and a coin inlet at the top thereof and including a longitudinally extending passage'forming rib upon the inner face of one of said members below said coin inlet, and the other member having a rib upon the inner face thereof including a portion underlying said first-named rib and a portion extending beyond the inner end of said first-named rib and forming a registering extension thereof.
21. A device of the character described comprising a pair of members pivoted together at' the upper edges thereof for opening movement of one member relative to the other, said members forming a coin passage therebetween and a coin inlet at the top thereof and including an inwardly and downwardly extending passage forming rib upon the inner faceof one of said members below said coin inlet, and the other member having an upwardly and inwardly extending rib upon the inner face thereof including a portion underlying said first-named rib and a portion forming a registering extension of said first-named rib.
22. A device of the character described comprising a pair of members pivoted together at the upper edges thereof for opening movement of one member relative to the other, said members forming a coin passage therebetween, a coin inlet at the top thereof and a discharge outlet at the lower end of the passage in oilset relation to said coin inlet, and including an inwardly and downwardly extending passage forming rib upon the inner face of one of said members below said coin inlet, the other member having an inwardly and upwardly extending rib upon the inner face thereof including a portion underlying said firstnamed rib and a portion forming a registering extension of said first-named rib, said ribs providing a succession of barriers co-operating to
