1 Claim.
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in metal containers, and more particularly to a metal container having a slip cover closure therefor.
An object of the invention is to provide a metal container wherein the cover is held on the container through the frictional grip of spaced projecting portions carried by the flange of the cover and contacting with the outer wall of the container.
A further object of the invention is to provide a container of the above type wherein the cover and the body wall are constructed so as to provide an extended seal therebetween.
These and other objects of the invention will in part be obvious and will be hereinafter more fully disclosed.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section of a container embodying the improvements;
Fig. 2 is a view partly in plan and partly in section of the same;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, which line is at one side of a gripping projection, and
Fig. 4 is a similar sectional view on the line 4-4 which line passes through a gripping projection.
The improved container comprises a body portion which is preferably cylindrical. A bottom end is seamed thereto in the usual manner. The upper end of the body portion is closed by an outside slip cover which is held in sealing engagement with said body portion by spaced gripping projections frictionally contacting with the outer face of said body portion. The body wall isrolled or curled inwardly at its upper end to provide a closed strengthening bead, that is, the edge portion is curled until it contacts the body wall. The body wall is beaded outwardly at a short dis.- tance below the upper edge. rigid non-flexing wall portion at the bottom end of the container. The cover is provided with a depending flange dimensioned so as to slip down over the body portion, and its inner diameter is slightly larger than the outer diameter of the body portion. Said cover top has an annular bead directly over the body wall which forms a recess on its inner face dimensioned so as to fit the head on the body portion and thus form an extended seal. The flange is curled outwardly and upwardly but not entirely closed so that it will flex. Between this curl and the top the flange is bent outwardly so as to provide a firm hand grip to aid in the removing of the cover.
This provides a very.
(o1. zen-42) This outwardly extending portion is preferably 7 knurled. The flange at its lower edge portion has a series of inwardly extending gripping projections or lugs. These projections are dimensioned'so as to make frictional contact with the e 5 body wall. A circle tangential to the projections before the cover is applied is of less diameter than the outer diameter of the body portion, and when the cover is forced on, the flange will flex inwardly between the projections permitting said projections to move outwardly and pass over the body wall. The curve of the bead onthe body aids in the deforming of the flange to permit the gripping projections to seat on the body and it is the spring of the flange that holds the projections in firm gripping contact with the body wall.
Referring to the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the improved container 5 consists of a body portion 6 to which a bottom end 5a is secured by double seaming. Said body portion is open at its upper end, and said open end of the body is closed by an outside slip cover 8. The body wall at its upper end is curled inwardly so as to form a closed hollow bead 'l and at a short distance below, the body wall is provided with an outwardly curved bead la. These beads strengthen the open end of the body portion and form a substantially rigid non-flexing portion. The cover 8 has an annular bead 9 directly over the body wall which forms a recess on its inner face dimensioned so as to fit the bead on the body portion and thus form an extended seal between the cover and the container. The cover also is provided with a depending flange Ill dimensioned so as to slip down over the body portion.- The inner diameter of this flange is slight: 1y larger than the outer diameter of the body portion. The flange is curled outwardly and upwardly at the lower edge thereof to form a hollow bead I I which, due to the fact that it is not entirely closed will allow the flange to flex. Between this open bead II and the top of the cover the flange is bent outwardly so as to provide'a firm hand grip to aid in removing the cover. This outwardly extending portion is preferably knurled as indicated at l2 in the drawing.
The flange at its lower edge portion has a series of inwardly extending gripping projections or lugs l3. These projections are dimensioned so as to make contact with the body wall. A circle tangential to the projections before the cover is applied is of less diameter than the outer diameter of the body portion. When the cover is forced on, the portion M of the flange between the projections will flex inwardly as shown at l5 in Fig. 2 of the drawing, permitting said projections to move outwardly and pass over the body wall. The curve of the bead on the body aids in the deforming of the flange to permit the gripping projections to seat on the body and it is the spring of the flange that holds the projections in firm gripping contact with the body wall.
Owing to the firm holding grip of the projections and the extended seal between the cover and the container bead, a container is produced which may be readily opened and closed and when closed it is practically airtight. This makes a container that is of especial value for ground coffee, which is constantly evolving a gas carrying ofi the volatile constituents giving flavor and aroma to the coffee. With applicants tight cover, this loss of coffee gas is reduced and deterioration prevented.
It is obvious that minor changes in the detail of construction and arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claim. 1
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A metal container comprising a body portion having an inwardly curled closed hollow bead at the upper edge thereof, said body wall having an outwardly projecting bead therein spaced away from the closed bead, said body wall between said beads being substantially of uniform diameter, a cover for said body portion having an annular recess disposed above said hollow bead and a flange closely fitting said body wall in the region of the closed bead at the upper end thereof, said flange having a projecting portion substantially at right angles to the body wall disposed opposite the lower portion of the closed bead when a cover is seated on the container body, said cover flange having a portion thereof depending from the outer edge of said last-named projecting portion, said last-named depending portion being inclined rearwardly toward the body and knurled, the lower edge portion of said flange being rolled outwardly to provide a bead and having widely spaced projecting portions disposed and dimensioned so as to frictionally grip the outer face of the body wall between said beads for holding the cover in sealed contact with said body portion.
