This invention relates to calculating machines and particularly to paper feeding means therefor wherein there is provided a rotatable platen and line spacing mechanism an object of the .in-'
vention being to provide improved means for obtaining fractional adjustments of the platen "to .the exact printing line independently of the line spacing mechanism. Another object is to provide improved means for obtaining varying line spacmg movements of the platen. Other objects and advantages will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts as set forth in the appended claims.

5 mounted between suitable frame plates, of which the left hand frame plate 3 only is shown, said shaft having fast thereto the ratchet wheel 4.
In effecting line spacing movements of the platen, it is proposed to employ a bail lever 5, fulcrumed at B to the framing, and, having link connection 1 with a segment gear 8,-the latter adjustments of the platen to the exact printing line independently of the line spacing mechanism, as follows:
. A planular carrier plate or head I6 is rotatably 'mounted on the platen shaft 2, the detent It being pivoted to said head at ll and having 'a roller 18 engaging said ratchet Wheel, said head having a member 19 carried therewith and en-= gaging said arm in to move saidarm and the pawl ll carried thereby in the operation of manipulable means'for rotating said head (to be described). Thus in the rotation of said head, the 4224111 and the detent will rotate therewith and a fractional adjustment of the platen will be obtained (through the detent) to the exact printing line, whereupon the line spacing mechanism may operate as before in the new positions of the pawl and the detent. The ratchet wheel is a spur wheel, the pawl H is reciprocable in the plane of said ratchet wheel, and the detent is movable in said plane.
Means areprovided for obtaining varying line spacing movements of the platen, comprisinga 10 plate 20, loosely mounted on the platen shaft 2, and having a limit stop (the member 19 aforesaid) engaged by the arm 10 at the end of each return movement thereof, through the medium'pf spring cushion device 22 carried by said arm, said plate 15 having an arcuate portion provided with a series of notches 23; and a spring impelled latch lever 24 fulcrumed to said carrier head at 25, and having a lug 26 engageable with any one of said notches 23 to hold said plate stationary and vary the position of said limit stop withrespect to said pawl, so that the latter will have a varying extent of movement in accord with the adjustment of said plate. The plate 20 is provided with a projection 21 normally engaged by said pawl to hold it clear of the ratchet wheel 4, and the free end of said latch lever and the free end of said detent are connected by a coiled spring 28 which serves the double purpose of i'mpelling the detent toward the ratchet wheel and the latch lever towardsthe notched plate 20. The segment gear 8 is pivoted to the carrier head 16, and the latter isprovided with a limit stop 29 for the pawl at the end of the forward movement thereof to prevent over rotation of the parts.
A manipulable device is provided for adjusting said carrier head l6 rotatably in obtaining fractional adjustments of the platen, comprising a transverse rod 30, rotatably mounted in the framing and having at one end thereof fast thereto an eccentric 3!, the strap .32 of which has a link connection 33 with said-head, a finger wheel l 34 being mounted on said rod at each end thereof. The adjustment is held by a friction disk 35 carried by said eccentric.
A coiled spring 35, connected to bail lever 5 serves to return said lever, link i, segment gear 8, gear 9, arm Ill, and pawl H to normal position after each intermittent movement thereof.

In a machine of the character described, 55 A having a rotatable platen, a line space wheel carried thereby, a head mounted for rotation on the platen shaft, a detent pivoted to said head and engaging said line space wheel, a line space pawl rotatable with said head and normally clear of said wheel, means including a finger wheel for rotating said head together with said detent and said pawl for fractional adjustment of the platen, and means for reciprocating said pawl for line space movement of the platen in any fractional adjustment position thereof; said line space wheel being a spur wheel, and said pawl being reciprocable in the plane of said line space wheel.

In a machine of the character described, having a rotatable platen, a line space wheel carried thereby, a head mounted for rotation on the platen shaft, a detent pivoted to said head and engaging said line space wheel, a line space pawl rotatable with said head and normally clear of said line space wheel, means including a finger wheel for rotating said head together with said detent and said pawl for fractional adjustment of the platen, and means for reciprocating said pawl for line space movement of the platen in any fractional adjustment position thereof; said head being planular, said line space wheel being a spur ratchet, said pawl being reciprocable in the plane of said ratchet wheel and said detent being movable in the plane of said ratchet wheel.

In a machine of the character described, having a rotatable platen, a line space wheel carried thereby, a head mounted for rotation on the platen shaft, a detent pivoted to said head and engaging said line space wheel, a line space pawl rotatable with said head and normally clear of said wheel, means including a finger wheel for rotating said head together with said detent and said pawl for fractional adjustment of the platen, and means for reciprocating said pawl for line space movement of the platen in any fractional adjustment position thereof; an arm loose on the platen shaft, said pawl being pivoted to said arm, and said head having a member carried therewith and engaging said arm to move said arm and said pawl in the operation of said means for rotating said head for fractional adjustment of the platen.
4. In a machine of the character described,
' having a-rotatable platen, a line space wheel carried thereby, a head mounted for rotation on the platen shaft, a detent pivoted to said head and engaging said linespace wheel, a line space pawl rotatable with said head and normally clear of said wheel, means including a finger wheel for rotating said head together with said detent and said pawl for fractional adjustment of the platen, and means for reciprocating said pawl for line space movement of the platen in any fractional adjustment position thereof; said head carrying a limit stop for said pawl, and means for adjusting said stop to vary the line spacing movement of said pawl.

In a machine of the character described, having a rotatable platen, a line space wheel carried thereby, a head mounted for rotation on the platen shaft, a detent pivoted to saidhead and engaging said line space wheel, a line space pawl rotatable with said head and normally clear of said wheel, means including a finger wheel for rotating said head together with said detent and said pawl for fractional adjustment of the platen, and means for reciprocating said pawl for line space movement of the platen in any fractional adjustment position thereof; an arm loose on the platen shaft, said pawl being pivoted to said arm, and said head having a member carried therewith forming 'a limit stop for said arm and said pawl and engaging said arm to move said arm and said pawl in the operation of said means for rotating said head for fractional adjustment of the platen, and means for adjusting said member to vary the line spacing movement of the pawl.

In a machine of the character-described, having "a rotatable platen, a line space wheel carried thereby, a head mounted for rotation on the platen shaft, a detent pivoted to said head and engaging said line space wheel, a line space pawl rotatable with said head and normally clear of said wheel, means including a finger wheel for rotating said head together with said detent and said pawl for fractional adjustment of the platen, and means for reciprocating said pawl for line space movement of the platen in any fractional adjustment position thereof; said head carrying limit stops for said pawl, and means for adjusting one of said stops with respect to the other to vary the line spacing movement of said pawl.

In a machine of the character described, having a rotatable platen, a line space wheel carried thereby, a head mounted for rotation on the platen shaft, a detent pivoted to said head and engaging said line space wheel, a line space pawl rotatable with said head and normally clear of said wheel, means including a finger wheel for rotating said head together with said detent and said pawl for fractional adjustment of the platen, and means for reciprocating said pawl for line spacing movement of the platen in any fractional adjustment position thereof; an arm loose on the platen shaft, said pawl being pivoted to said arm, said head carrying limit stops for said pawl one of which is a member loose on the platen shaft and having a series of notches and having a cooperating member pivoted to said head and engageable with any one of said notches to vary the line spacing movement of the pawl, said member having a projection to normally hold said pawl clear of said wheel, and said means for reciprocating said pawl including a gear pivoted to said head.

In a. machine of the character described, having a rotatable platen, a line space wheel carried thereby, a head mounted for rotation on the platen shaft, a detent pivoted to said head and engaging said line space wheel, a line space pawl rotatable with said head and normally clear of said wheel, means including a finger wheel for rotating said head together with said detent and said pawl for fractional adjustment of the platen, and means for reciprocating said pawl for line space movement of said platen in any fractional adjustment position thereof; said means for rotating said head for fractional adjustment of the platen comprising a shaft mounted in the stationary framing of the machine, an eccentric fast to said shaft and having a strap and link connection with said head, and a friction disk carried by said eccentric for holding the adjustment.
