PATENT OFFICE PAPER BOX Clarence Lloyd Claff, Randolph, Mass.
Application June 13,
4 Claims.
:10 to the appearance of the box.
An object of the present invention is to form a box out of a foldable blank wherein the end flaps are foldable over and placed astride inturned side wings butin. the present instance it is an 54-35 object to so design the foldable end flaps that after they have been properly positioned during the completion of the box, well finished side edges will be presented by the outer thicknesses of. the end flaps, instead of raw unsightly edges 20 such as heretofore exposed. I
i A further object is to provide a box which can be. made of a blank which is easily shaped and handled by box making machinery, it being unnecessary .to utilize any mechanisms excessively 25 complicated in order to obtain the results desired. Another object is to provide a box in which :the side edges of the outer thicknesses of the end folds are provided with folds so that the raw edges are not exposed but, instead, only the 30 surface of the finishing paper will bepresented to view. 1 r With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of 13 construction and combinations of parts and in certain steps of the method hereinafter more I fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts and 1 40 .in the disclosed method without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred forms of the invention have been shown.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of one end portion of a box made in accordiance'with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the complete blank .50 from which the box is formed.
Figure 3 is an enlarged plan view of one corner portion of the blank wherein one side ear of an end fiap is bent back for the purpose of concealing the raw edge of the flap when theblank is :5 u-shapedintoabx, l p p 1935, Serial No. 26,478
Figure 4 is an enlarged section on line 4-4 Figure 1. V
Figure 5 is an enlarged vertical transverse section through one side portion of the completed box, a portion of the end flap being broken away to show the inturned wing and ear.
Figure 6 is a plan view of one end portion of a blank used in the manufacture of a modification of the box.
Figure '7 is a similar view of said end portion following the inturning of the side ears of the end fiap.
Figure 8 is a perspective view of one corner portion of the completed box made from the blank illustrated in Figure 7.
Figure 9 is a horizontal section on line 9-9 Figure 8. p
Figure 10 is aplan View of one corner portion of another modified form of blank.
Figure 11 is a horizontal section through one corner portion of a box made of the blank illustrated in Figure 10.
Figure 12 is a plan view of one end portion of one thickness of a laminated blank used in the production of a further modified form of box, the side ears of the end flap being bent back.
Figure 13 is a plan view of one end portion of the other thickness of the laminated blank removed from the thickness shown in Figure 12.
Figure 14 is a perspective view of one corner portion of the complete laminated blank, the side ear of the end flap of one thickness of the blank being shown seated in the recess provided therefor at one side of the end flap of the other thickness of the blank.
Figure 15 is a vertical section through one of the completed ends of the box formed of a laminated blank.
Figure 16 is a. horizontal section through one corner portion of the completed blank.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, l designates a blank formed from a web of box board to one surface of which has been affixed a web of finishing paper 2 the side edges of which are wrapped around the side edges of the box board I as shown. The webs thus joined are adapted to be out transversely to proper lengths for the purpose of providing a blank such as shown in Figure 2, the said blank being divided by score lines 3 into a bottom portion 4, side walls 5 and end flaps 6. Side wings I are extended from the ends of the wall portions 5 and are divided from the end flaps 6 by slits 8 which extend back into the blank from the ends thereof so as to produce side wings I each made foldable end flaps l6 and side wings l1.
up of a narrow tongue 9 the inner end portion of which is curved laterally as at I to one corner of the bottom portion 4. Thus ears I I are formed at the sides of each end flap 6, each of these ears extending up to the wing I and following the contour of the slit 8.
A coating I2 of suitable adhesive is applied to portions of the flap 6 and is adapted to cover the corresponding surface of each ear I I.
Following the shaping of the blank as heretofore described the side portions are bent to positions perpendicular to the bottom portion 4 and the wings I are extended inwardly toward each other, it being understood that the lower curved edges produced by the slits 8 will obviously be supported above the level of the bottom 4 of the box as will be apparent by referring to Figure 5. Thereafter the ears II are folded back onto the respective end flaps 6 as shown in Figure 3 and said end flaps are then folded over the inturned wings I so as to straddle them, the said folded end flaps and the wings I being subjected to pressure so as to solidify the end wall of the box and to cause the parts to adhere properly.
Obviously the box when thus completed will not present raw edges atthe side of the outer thickness of each end flap. Instead these side edges will consist of rounded surfaces produced at the bends or folds between ears II and the flaps 6. Only the surface of the finishing paper will be exposed and therefore the box will not present an unsightly appearance. Furthermore by shaping the blank as described and folding it in the manner pointed out the box is in no sense weakened at its ends.
Instead of forming a blank having an end flap with a single side ear extending throughout the length thereof as in Figures 1 to 5' inclusive, the blank may be modified as shown in Figures 6 to 9 inclusive. Inthese figures the blank is of the same construction as the one heretofore described with the exception of the side ears of the end flaps. In this modifiedform the bottom portion I3 is divided by scores I4 from side portions I5, The side wings are shaped the same as the win-gs I but the end flaps I6, instead of being formed each with a single ear extending up to the slit l8 defining wing II, is provided with two ears I9 and 20 respectively both of which extend up to the slit I8 but are divided from each other by a transverse slit 2I alining with the score 22 along which flap I6 is adapted to be fol'ded. A suitable adhesive 23 is applied to one surface of the flap I6 between the score 22 and the end of the flap and this adhesive also extends over the corresponding surface of each of the ears l9 and 20.
Following the cutting and creasing of the blank the side ears I9 of the end flaps I6 are folded toward each other so as to lap and be affixed to the end flaps as shown in Figure 7. The side portions I5 are then extended perpendicular to the bottom portion I3 and the side wings I! are 0 extended toward each other. Thereafter the end flaps I6 each of which appears as in Figure 7, are
' folded upwardly over the" inturned side wings so 1 that the ears I 9 as well'as the side'wings will thus be straddled by the end flaps.
The side cars 26, however, will be permitted to extend along the inner surfaces of the side portions I5 as shown in Figures 8 and 9 where they will be joined to the side portions by the adhesive. I
As a result of the construction described not only will the side edges of the outer thicknesses of the end flaps present finished rounded surfaces formed by the finishing paper 24 on the outer surface of the blank but the ears 20 extending inwardly from the end flaps and aifixed to the side portions I5 will impart added strength to the corners of the box.
If preferred, and as shown in Figure 10, the ears 20 can be eliminated and each foldable end flap 25 can be provided solely with side ears 26 extending only from the inner end of the flap 25 to the intermediate transverse crease or score 2? in said flap. In this construction the end fiap 25 with its inturned ears 26 will of course straddle the inturned side wings 21 of the blank.
Under some conditions it is desirable to manufacture the box out of laminated paper board. Such a structure has been illustrated in Figure 12 wherein the outer thickness of board has been indicated at 28, the same being covered on the outer side with a thickness of finishing paper 29 extending beyond the side edges of the board 28 while its other surface is coated with an adhesive as shown at 30. Joined to the outer thickness 28 is an inner thickness of paper board indicated at 3i in Figure 13, it being designed to extend the side portions of the finishing paper 29 around the corresponding side edges of the two thicknesses of paper board as indicated for example in Figure 14. Before the material 28 with its coatings of finishing paper and adhesive is joined to the material 3|, it is cut to form foldable end flaps 32, side wings 33 which are shaped like the wings I heretofore described, and side ears 34 corresponding in shape to the ears II. Likewise, before the thickness 3| is applied to the thickness 28 it is cut to provide side wings 35 similar in shape and size to the wings 33 and also to provide foldable end flaps 36. The sides of these end flaps 36 are cut away, however, thus to provide recesses 31 of the same proportion as the ears 34.
Obviously after the two thicknesses of material have been shaped as described they can be assembled one upon the other so as to be held together by the adhesive coating 30 and by the inturned side edges of the finishing paper 2.9. The ears 34 can be folded back on the flaps 32 and will occupy the recesses 31 at the sides of the flaps 36 as shown in Figure 14. Thus ears 34 will be flush with flaps 36.
The blank can be scored and severed so that, following the assembly of the parts thereof, the side portions 38 of the blank can be extended perpendicularly to the bottom portion 39 and side wings 33 and 35 can be extended toward each other. The lapping and joined end flaps with the inturned ears 34 can then be folded over the inturned side wings so as to straddle them and be aifixed thereto and as the ears 34 occupy the recesses 31 they will not render the end walls bulky but will permit both thicknesses of each end fiap to extend straight from side to side of the box.
It is to be understood that the term box as herein used has reference to either the body portion or the lid of a box because both of these parts can be constructed in the manner disclosed.
In order that the top edges of the folded end flaps of the several forms may lie in the same plane with the top edges of the side walls, it is generally desirable to cut away portions of the top edges of the side wings to provide depressions as indicated at 40 so as to allowthe end flaps and their inturned ears to be properly located.
What is claimed is:
1. A paper box comprising ablankmade up of affixed thicknesses of box board material, said blank having one surface coated with finishing paper, the said thicknesses cooperating to provide a blank having side portions, side wings, and foldable end flaps, there being recessesin one thickness of each end flap at the side thereof and correspondingly shaped ears at the sides of the other thickness of each end flap, said ears being folded onto the outer thickness of the end flaps and seated in the recesses provided by the inner thicknesses of the end flaps, the side wings of the blank being extended toward each other and the end flaps with thefolded side ears being astride and afixed to the side wings.
2. A paper box including a blank with side portions having side wings and foldable end flaps having side recesses and ears extending beyond the recesses toward the side wings, said side ears being folded toward each other and into the recesses and lying flush with the corresponding surfaces of the end flaps, and said side wings being extended toward each other, the end flaps being folded over the side wings and with the inturned ears afiixed to the side wings.
3. A paper box comprising a blank of separate thicknesses of paper board, a coating of finishing paper on the outer surface of one of said thicknesses one of said thicknesses having side portions, side wings, end flaps, and side ears on the end flaps, the side ears being folded onto their end flaps, the other thickness of material having side portions, side wings, and end flaps provided with side recesses proportioned to contain the side ears, the two thicknesses being affixed one upon the other to provide a laminated structure, the folded ears being flush with the recessed end flaps, and the side wings being extended toward each other, said end flaps of the blanks being folded over the inturned side wings and afiixed thereto.
4. A paper box including a blank of paper board having one surface coated with finishing paper, said blank being shaped to provide bottom and side portions, side wings and foldable end flaps, there being inturned side ears integral with and affixed to the end flaps, said side wings being inturned and said end flaps with their inturned side ears being folded over and straddling and affixed to the inturned side wings, there being cut-away portions in the top edges of the inturned side wings constituting seats for the adjacent portions of the inturned ears on the straddling end flaps.
