The invention relates to a snow shovel and more especially to an emergency collapsible snow shovel.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a shovel of this character wherein the blade which is formed of several sections is slidably connected with a handle made in several sections and telescopically joined with each other so that the size of the shovel can be materially reduced whereby when not in use it can be stored in the least possible space, the shovel in its construction being adaptable for storage in an automobile tool kit.
Another object of the inve-ntion is the provision of a shovel of this character which is simple in its construction, thoroughly reliable and efcient in its operation, readily and easily adjusted, susceptible of being stored in the least possible space, strong, durable and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan View of a shovel constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 2--2 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is an end elevation.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the shovel comprises a blade A and a handle B respectively. The blade is composed of the several sections 5 and t respectively, these being made from corrugated sheet rnetal. The section 5 is formed with an attaching ferrule l, it being internally threaded for detachable engagement with the threaded end 3 of the tubular section 9 of the handle B,
This handle B also includes the tubular section Il! which is telescoped in the section 9 and is slidable therein for increasing or decreasing the length of the handle B.
'Ihe section 6 of the blade A at opposite side edges has formed therewith the guide flanges I l, these overlapping the section 5 for slidably connesting section 6 therewith. 'I'hus the blade A can be extended or contracted by adjustment of the section 6. This section 6 is formed with a collar l2 slidably embracing the tubular section 9 of the handle B. The collar l2 is located next to the inner end edge of the section 6. This edge of the said section 6 is formed with a iinger-hold I3 so that the section 6 can be shifted for the extending or the contracting of the blade A.
The collar l2 has iXed thereto a spring latch 10 ill which engages a keeper hole l5 provided in section 9 of the handle B, thus permitting the locking of the section 6 in position when the blade A is extended.
The section 9 of the handle B has tted there- 15 to a spring latch I5 which is engageable in a keeper hole I6 provided in section I0 and in this manner When the section I0 is pulled outwardly from the section 9, it can be locked in this position and thus extending the handle. The section l0 at its upper end carries a loop grip or hand hold Il. The shovel in its construction affords a convenient snow shovel and the same is readily collapsible when not in use so that it can be conveniently stored in an automobile tool kit or otherwise to occupy the least possible space.
What is claimed is:
1. A shovel of the character described comprising a blade having slidably intertted sheetlike sections, a ferrule on one of the sections of o the blade, an extensible and contractible handle detachably fitting the ferrule, and a collar on the other section and slidably tting the handle.
2. A shovel of the character described comprising a blade having slidably intertted sheet- 3- like sections, a ferrule on one of the sections of the blade, an extensible and contractible handle detachably fitting the ferrule, a collar on the other section and slidably tting the handle, and means on the collar and engageable with the han- ,10 dle to latch it in adjustedposition.
3. A shovel of the character described comprising a blade having slidably intertted sheet-like sections, a ferrule on one of the sections of the blade, an extensible and contractible handle de- 4f tachably tting the ferrule, a collar on the other section and slidably tting the handle, means on the collar and engageable with the handle to latch it in adjusted position, and means for latching the handle extended or contracted.
