1 Claim.

The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in writing boards of the portable type for use particularly in taking inventories, recording sales at public auctions, by

5, surveyors or people working out-of-doors, etc., and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a board of this character embodying a compartment for the storage of the sheets of paper.

19 Another important object of the invention is to provide novel means for detachably but securely fastening the sheets in position on the board.

Other objects of the invention are to provide 15 a writing board of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efficient and reliable in use, compact, attractive in appearance and which may be manufactured at low cost.

) All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:

Figure 1 is a view in rear perspective of a writing board constructed in accordance with the present invention.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a case which is designated generally by the reference numeral i, said case being of suitable metal and including a bottom 2, a top 3, a lower end wall 4 and side walls 5. It will thus be seen that a compartment 6 is provided for the reception of the sheets after they have been used, said compartment being open at its top for the insertion of said sheets. As best seen in Figure 1 of the drawings, the case is substantially rectangular.

The top 3 of the case I extends, at its upper or forward end, beyond the walls I and 5 of said case, as at I. It may be well to here mention that the top 3 of the case I provides a writing board or panel. Toward this end, the top 3 has mounted on its upper portion a spring actuated clamp 3 for securing the sheets of paper in position, said clamp 8 being engageable in a transverse groove or channel 9 which is provided 5 therefor in the board 3 to permit a firmer grip to be had on the sheets.

A door 55 is provided for closing the compartment 8, said door being journaled between the side walls 5 of the case i adjacent the top 3 10 through the medium of a rod H which extends through a rolled loop 92 on one edge of the door. The rod ii projects beyond the ends of the loop 2 for engagement in openings provided therefor in the side walls 5.

A spring i3 is mounted on one of the side walls 5 and engaged with the door It] for yieldingly urging said door toward open position. As will be apparent, the projecting end portion 1 of the top 3 serves as a stop to limit movement of the door it) under impulsion of the spring 13. The door H3 is releasably secured in closed position through the medium of a resilient latch 14 which is mounted on the aforementioned one side wall 5 of the case i, said latch being operatively engageable with an apertured ear !5 which projects from the adjacent end of said door 10. The latch H3 is actuated to release the door 28 through the medium of a lug it which is mounted on said latch and which projects through an opening it provided therefor in the side wall 5 upon which the latch is mounted.

Briefly, the device is used in the following manner:-

The sheet of paper to be used is positioned on the board 3 and secured by the clamp 8, as will be readily understood. As the sheets are used they are removed from the board 3 and the door ii is opened to permit said sheets to be placed in the compartment 6. If desired, the compartment 6 may also be utilized for the storage of m a supply of paper. It will be seen that the filled sheets may be safely stored without the necessity for folding the same.
