Claims.
This invention relates to separable hinge lasts, by which is meant lasts collapsible by a relative rotation of a. heel part and a forepart and so organized that the heel part can be re- 5 moved from a shoe on the last without disturbing the forepart.
An important object of the invention is the provision of such a last in a mechanically effective and economical form.
Accordingly I have provided a last having a relatively rotatable heel part and forepart with a bonding member in each part, one of said bonding members being of V shape with inwardly projecting lugs, and the other bonding member having a head with projecting lugs insertable in the bight of the V and wedging against the inwardly projecting lugs when the last is in operative position. Advantageously, also, the lugs are obliquely situated so that the collapsing rotation is sufiicient to turn the head enough to permit its sliding out between the inturned lugs to effect separation of the last parts.
These and other features of the invention comprising certain combinations and arrangements of parts will be apparent from the following description of a preferred embodiment of the invention shown in the drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a longitudinal vertical cross-section the last in operative position;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the last collapsed;
Fig. 3 illustrates the separability of the forepart and the heel part;
Fig. 4 is a detail of the locking spring;
Fig. 5 is a detail of the headed plate; and
Fig. 6 is a detail of the V-shaped plate.
The forepart ID of the illustrated last has the usual knuckle l2 fitting rotatably into a 40 socket 114 in the heel part. The upper parts of the joint surfaces of the two last parts are cut off by planes [8, to form. the ordinary V-cut,
to permit collapse.
The bonding and hinge mechanism of the 45 last comprises a plate 22 (Fig. 5) and. a plate 24 (Fig. 6). Each plate fits into a recess 26 or 28, preferably formed by a chain mortiser in its last part, and the plates are anchored in position by pins 30, 32 passing through holes 34, 36 in the plates. The plate 22 has an enlarged head, comprising projections 38, 40, the projections 38 lying below and ahead of the projection Ml, so that the longitudinal axis of the head lies 55 nearly parallel to the longitudinal axis of the plate. The projection 38 is Somewhat rounded to facilitate its acting as a hinge.
The plate 2 3 is V-shaped and has two hooklike projections 42, 44, cooperating with the projections 38, 4-8, respectively, when the last is extended as in Fig. 1. The hook 42 lies considerably forward of the hook M in the last. The head of the plate 22 is thus wedged between the ends of the V-shaped plate 2 2 (Fig. l) and firmly holds the last parts together. A spring it (Fig. 4) is provided with one end 48 seated in a hole 53 in the plate 22, and is confined between the plate 22 and the edge 52 of the recess 26 in the forepart, with its other end 54 abutting against a shoulder 56 on the head 44 of the plate 26 to prevent any rotative collapsing movement (Fig. 1). Any rotative movement in the opposite direction, due to pressure in the leveling machine, for example, is prevented by the engagement of the projections at M] and 44 (Fig. 1).
When it is desired to collapse the last the end 54 of the spring 46 is depressed so that it can pass under the projection 44 and the forepart is rotated clockwise relatively to the heel part (Fig. 2). The head 38, All! of the plate 22 rotates backward approximately about the projection 38 as center, into the bight of the V in the plate 24 until the surfaces I8, 28 approximate, the end 34 of the plate 24 entering the recess 28 in the forepart It, to permit this movement. In extending the last, this movement is reversed, the end 54 of the spring 46 slipping back over the head 44 against the shoulder 56.
In case it is desired to separate the last parts, the last is first collapsed as in Fig. 2, and the rotary movement of the forepart is continued, 1
now about the corner 58 at the upper front end of the heel part, as center. The spring 46 is bent toward the plate 22 still farther by pressure of the head 44 upon it until the head 38 rides over the head 42, when the forepart can be drawn completely away from the heel part. A reverse movement will unite the last parts again, as in Fig. 2, and the last can then be expanded as before.
It will be observed that the longitudinal axis of the head 38, '48 of the plate 22 lies at an angle of about 45 to the central aXis of symmetry of the \l-shaped plate 24, when the last is in operative position (Fig. 1). Thus, the collapsing rotation of the forepart relatively to the heel part, through approximately the angle between the planes l8 and 2%, will bring the axis of the head 38, 4B nearly parallel to the central axis of the plate 24, so that the head 38, it has plenty of room to slip out between the hooks 2 and id.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to 'secure by Letters Patent of the United States is; l
1. A hinge last comprising a heal part and a forepart relatively rotatable to collapse the last, a V-shaped bonding plate having inwardly projecting lugs at the ends of, its arms mounted in one of said last parts, and a second bonding plate mounted in the other of said last parts and having a portion projecting therefrom, said projection having outwardly projecting lugs arranged to lie within the bight of the said V and to wedge against the said inwardly projecting lugs when the last parts are in extended position, whereby rotation of the last parts to collapsed position will rotate said projecting portion backward into the bight of the V.
2. A hinge last comprising a heel part and a forepart, a V-shaped bonding plate having inwardly turned terminal projections on its arms mounted in one of said last parts, and a bonding plate mounted in the other said last part and having lateral projections arranged to engage the, said terminal projections when the last parts are in operative relative positions, the construction being such that the projection of the distance between said lateralprojections upon the line joining the said terminal projections is shortened by rotating the last parts into collapsed position, whereby the second-named bonding plate may be removed from the v-shaped plate when the last is collapsed, to separate the last parts. i
3. A hinge last having a heel part and a forepart relatively rotatable to collapse the last, one of said last parts having a knuckle and the other last part having a surface cooperating with the 40 knuckle to facilitate said rotation, a V-shaped bonding member having inwardly projecting lugs at the ends of its arms located in one of said last parts, one said lug being located over said knuckle, and the other said lug lying above and to the rear of the first-named lug, a second bonding member in the other said last part having a head projecting therefrom, said head having outwardly projecting jugs arranged to lie inside the said V and to wedge behind said inwardly projecting lugs when the last'is in extended position, and a locking member extending between said bonding members to resist rotation of the last parts into collapsed position.
4. A hinge last having a heel part and a forepart relatively rotatable to collapse the last, one of said last parts havinga knuckle and the other last part having a surface cooperating with the knuckle to facilitate said rotation, a V-shaped bonding member having inwardly projecting lugs at the ends of its arms located in one of said last parts, one said lug being located over said knuckle, and the other said lu'g lying above and to' the rear of the first-named lug, and a second bonding member in the other said last part having a head obliquely projecting therefrom, said head having outwardly projecting lugs arranged to lie inside the said V and to wedge behind said inwardly projecting lugs when the last is in extended position, the construction being also such that when the last parts are relatively rotated about the knuckle to collapse the last, the obliquity of said head will permit said head to rotate backward into the bi'ght of the V, l.-

seat therein, and a spring mounted, in said seat and lying in said clearance and abutting the said upper lug on the V-shaped-plate;
