6 Claims.
My invention relates to metal weatherstrips for windows or doors. It has for its principal bject to provide an efficient and durable weatherstrip of simple and economical construction which can be readily applied to the window or door without material alteration thereof, which will prevent rattling of the closure member in the frame and which will automatically accommodate itself to the shrinking and swelling of the frame and closure and, at the same time, maintain a weather-proof joint therebetween. Another principal object is to prevent air and dust from entering the room through the sash pulley openings of a double hung window construction.
The invention consists in the improved weatherstrip, it also consists in locating the weatherstrips for the vertical edges of the upper sash of a double hung window outwardly of the openings in the frame for the pulleys for said sash; and it also consists in the construction, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

Figs. l, 2, and 3 of the accompanying drawing illustrate a double-hung wooden window construction equipped with metal weatherstrips embodying one form of the present invention. Said construction comprises a wooden frame including a pulley stile or jamb l, an inside stop 2, an
outside or blind stop 3, a parting strip or bead 4 mounted in a groove 5 provided therefor between the two stops, and a staif bead or ornamental outside molding 3a secured to the outer face of the outside or blind stop. The stile I,
blind or outside stop 3 and parting bead i of the window frame form the Vertical slideway for the upper sash 6; and the vertical slideway for the lower sash l is formed by said stile, said parting bead and the inside stop 2. The window (Cl. 2li-69) construction is provided with the usual sash balances including weighted connecting tapes or cords i combined with pulleys 9 journaled in brackets iii mounted in openings provided therefor in the stile l.
The joint between the vertical meeting edges of each pulley stile l oi the window frame and the lower sash or closure l therefor is rendered weather-proof and dust-proof by means of a weatherstrip comprising cooperating strips A and B of sheet metal mounted vertically on said pulley stile and said lower1 sash, respectively. The frame or pulley stile strip A is made of a strip of resilient metal that is bent or folded lengthwise along the middle thereof to form a tubular bead 1f ll that forms a connecting hinge between a stationary main bod?,7 portion or base ilange l2, which bears flatwise against the face oi the stile that forms the bottom of the runway for the lower sash, and a resilient sealing flange E3 that eX- o tends at a diverging oblique angle to said main body portion and terminates at its free outer end in a reversely inclined portion it that eX- tends in the direction of the body portion i2 and is doubled back to form a hem. The main body portion. l2 terminates at its outer margin in a flange l5 that extends away from the resilient sealing flange i3 and nts snugly between the inner face of the parting bead and the groove 5 provided therefor in the pulley stile l. The base flange l2 of the frame strip A is disposed tangent to the tubular bead i l thereof, while the resilient sealing ange i3 of said strip joins said bead close to said base ange, forming a heel which bears against said base ange when said seal- 3- ing ange is depressed and constitutes a fulcrum for said sealing flange, thereby distributing the strain or resistance of said sealing iiange throughout the circumference oi said bead and thus maintaining the resiliency oi said sealing flange.
The metal sash strip B is bent to form a flange It, which is nailed cr otherwise secured flatwise to the stile opposing face of the lower sash near the outer corner thereof in position to be en- 45 gaged by the resilient sealing iiange 3 of the frame strip along the line formed by the inwardly inclined hemmed margin ill thereof, an outstanding rib il disposed in abutting relation to said hemmed free margin of said frame strip, and a iiange IS that bears flatwise against the outer face ci said lower sash.
By the arrangement described, the sealing ange i3 of the frame strip A resiliently engages the frame opposing flange l of the sash strip B and is disposed with its free end in abutting relation to the outstanding rib il of said sash strip, thereby sealing the joint between the sash and frame along two separate lines. The resili- 5 ent flanges i3 of the frame strip maintains contact with the sash strip regardless of shrinking and swelling of the frame or sash; and the free end of said iiange is sprung behind the rib l? of the sash strip and thus prevents rattling of the sash due to movement thereof towards and away from the parting bead. The sash strip also serves 'as a wear strip between the wooden sash and the jamb strip; and it also tends to cut down friction between the frame strip and the sliding sash.
The weatherstrip for weather-proofing the joint between the opposing faces of the pulley stile l and upper sash 6 may be of any suitable construction; but, as shown in Fig. l, such strip should be located in the slideway therefor between the sash pulley opening in said slideway and the outside or blind stop 3, thus preventing air and dust from passing through the outermost sash pulley opening back of the pulley stile and thence into the room through the innermost pulley opening. T'his upper sash strip is the same as the lower sash strip B. The upper frame strip A is similar to the lower frame strip A, except that the upper frame strip is narrower than the lower frame strip and has the outer marginal portion l5a of its frame engaging portion located in a vertical groove or kerf i8 provided therefor in the inner face of the blind stop 3 and is bent to form a rib I9 adapted to abut against said face of said stop. In this form of frame strip, the rib bears flatwise against the inner face Vof the blind stop and thus serves as a stop for limiting the distance that the strip projects into the groove I8 regardless of the depth thereof;
40 it also serves to maintain the free edge of the resilient sealing flange of the frame strip A' substantially parallel to the rib of the flange Il of the sash strip; and it also serves to limit the outward movement of the upper sash. The frame 45 strip A also prevents leakage through the crack between the blind stop and pulley stile.
Y In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the weatherstrip comprises a single frame strip A similar to the frame strip A, except that the flange 50 lh of the strip A" is rebent to form a second resilient sealing flange 20 that projects from the parting bead groeve across the outer face of the lower sash 'and terminates in a hemmed margin that bears against said sash.
The modified frame strip A shown in Fig. 5, is similar to the frame strip A shown in Fig. 4, except that the strip of Fig. 5 is doubled back to form a ange Hic that engages the kerf or groove la provided therefor in the inner face of the parting bead t, instead of extending into the parting bead groove, as shown in Fig. 4. The strip of Fig. 5, together with the upper frame strip of Fig. 2, is particularly adapted toI Window constructions wherein the parting beads stick 65 in the grooves and cannot be removed therefrom without damage.
Obviously, the invention is not limited to use with the Vwindow construction shown and described.
What I claim is:
l l. In a double-hung window construction comprising upper and lower sliding sashes and a pulley stile having slideways for the respective sashes and pulley openings in said slideways, weatherstrips interposed between said sashes and members, said weatherstrip comprising two Vmetal Y strips, one adapted to be fastened to the frame member and the other to the closure member, the frame strip comprising a frame engaging base portion and a resilient closure engaging sealing flange, the closure strip comprising a flange engaging the frame opposing edge of said closure, and adapted to be engaged by said sealing flange, a flange engaging the outer face of said closure and an outstanding rib extending across the free marginal edge o-f said sealing flange in position to be engaged thereby.

The combination of a frame member andk a closure member mounted therein of a weatherstrip interposed between the Vmeetingedges of said members, said weatherstrip comprising two metal strips, one adapted tol be fastened to the frame member and the other to the closure member, the frame strip compris# ing a frame engaging baseY portion and arresilient closure engaging sealing flange, the closure strip comprising a ange engaging the frame opposing edge of said closure and adapted to be engaged by said sealing flange, a flange engaging the outer face of said closure and an outstanding rib extending across the free mar-v ginal edge of said sealing flange in position to cooperate therewith, the base flange Vof said frame strip being provided with an outstanding rib disposed in overlapping relation to the Outstanding rib of said closure strip.
4. The combination of a frame member and a closure member mounted therein of a weatherstrip interposed between the meeting edges of said members, said Weatherstrip comprising two metal strips, one adapted to be fastened to the frame member and the other to the closure member, the frame stripy comprising a frame engaging base portion and a resilient closure engaging sealing flange, the closure strip comprising a ange engaging the frame opposing edge ofsaid closure and adapted to be engaged by said sealing flange, Ya flange engaging the outer face of said closure and an outstanding rib extending across the free marginal edge ofA said sealing flange in position to cooperate therewith.
5. The combination of a frame member and a closure member mounted therein, of a weatherstrip of resilient metal arranged between the meeting edges of said members, said strip comprising a frame engaging base p0rtion and two resilient closure member engaging flanges, one of said flanges resiliently engaging the frame opposing edge of Said closure member and the other flange resiliently engaging the outer face of said closure member, said strip having a longitudinally folded portion forming a rib between the base portion of said strip and said last mentioned sealing ange thereof that seats within a longitudinal groove provided therefor in said frame member.

The combination of a frame anda closure mounted therein, said frame having a portion facing the edge of said closure and a portion overlapping the marginal portion of one side face of said closure, of a Weatherstrip of resilient metal interposed between said edge of said closure and the portion of the frame facing said edge, said weatherstrip comprising a base portion engaging said edge opposing face of said frame with one margin extending into a groove provided therefor in said side face opposing portion of said frame and having a resilient iiange extending across said base portion at an oblique angle thereto in the direction of said margin, said base portion being provided adjacent to said margin With an outstanding longitudinal rib adapted to abut against said side face opposing portion of said frame for limiting the distance that said margin extends into said groove and for positioning said Weatherstrip parallel With the closure opposing face of said last mentioned portion of said frame, and a metal Weatherstrip secured to said closure in position to be engaged by the free margin of said resilient flange, said last mentioned weatherstrip having an outstanding longitudinal rib thereon disposed between the free margin of the resilient sealing flange of said first mentioned Weatherstrip and the outstanding longitudinal rib thereof.
