Claims.
This invention relates to burglar alarms and embodies a spring energized bell adapted to be associated with aV window and acted upon by a swinging arm in such manner that, when at- 5 tempt is made to open either the upper or lower sashes, the bell will be caused to ring.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple positive construction which may be marketed at a low cost to the user and which may be readily associated'with window sashes in a detachable manner without unduly marring or defa-cing the sash construction.
ri'he invention comprises an angular plate in the free end of the horizontal portion of which is formed a slot adapted to be detachabiy engaged with a screw screwed into the upper face of the lower sash and adjacent one of the lateral edges thereof in order to detachably hold the plate in position on the sash. On the said horizontal portion of the plate is rigidly mounted a bell of the spring type having an Operating button extending in a direction away from the Vertical portion of the plate and the upper edge of the Vertical portion of the plate is curled over to provide a hinged section carrying a hinged pin. An Operating plate or leaf is .pivotally mounted on the hinged pin and extends into ccoperative relation with the Operating button of the bell. This leaf is bowed and is adapted to be operated by a pin detachably inserted in any one of a number of perforations provided in the adjacent side stile of the upper sash. A spring normally holds the said leaf free from contact with the Operating button.
The device may be economically manufactured and easily installed and may be removed from, the sash when desired without the use of tools.
Features of the invention, other than those referred to, will be apparent from the hereinafter detailed description and claims, when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawing.
The aceompanying drawing illustrates one practical embodiment of the invention, but the construction therein shown is to be understood as illustrative, only, and not as defining the limits of the invention.
Figure i is an inside view of window construction with which the present invention is shown as associated.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary perspective View pictorially illustrating the present invention in cooperative relation with the window construction.
Referring to the drawing, I indicates a window frame having therein conventional upper and lower sashes 2 and 3, respectively.
The device of the present invention embodies a right angular plate having a horizontal legV 4 and a Vertical leg 5 adapted to be positioned as shown in the drawing, so that the horizontal leg 4 rests on the upper edge of the lower sash, while the Vertical leg 5 bears against the adjacent side of the window frame. The horizontal leg i is slotted as shown at 6 and a screw l is adapted to be screwed into the lower sash, so that the slot 5 may be passed over the screw and the angle plate then returned into the position shown in the drawing. The screw will then hold the angle plate in position, so that it will not fall off of the lower sash when said sash is opened or closed.
Rigidly mounted on the horizontal leg 4 is a bell 8 of that type commonly used on bicycles and wherein the cap of the bell may be manually rotated to wind up a closed spring cooperating with a rotatable clapper, in such manner as to energize the clapper for operation when an operating button 9 is pressed. The construction of this bell is conventional and a detailed showing thereof is not considered necessary.
The upper end of the Vertical arm 5 of the angle plate is coiled over to form curls iii adapted to support a hinged pin I l and on this hinged pin is pivotally mounted an operating leaf |2 bowed in an cuter direction. The upper end of this leaf is curled around the hinged pin while the lower end of the leaf prcjects in a position to overlie the outer end of the Operating button 9. A leaf spring |3 is riveted to the vertical leg 5 of the angle plate and bears against the Operating leaf IZ to normally hold it free of the Operating button. This is a relatively light spring, however, but is sufilciently strong to support the weight of the Operating leaf as stated.
The side stile of the upper sash adjacent the device is provided with a vertically spaced apart row of perforations Hi into any one of which a pin |5 may be inserted, so as to overlie the Operating leaf 12, as clearly shown in the drawmg.
The parts assembled as described are shown in cooperative relation with a window in the several figures of the drawing and from this disclosure it will be apparent that if the lower sash is raised or the upper sash is lowered, the pin |5 will engage the leaf |2 and force said leaf against the operating button 9 to cause the bell to sound. The particular hole |4 in which the pin I is placed will depend upon whether the window is entirely closed Or whether it is to be protected in partially opened condition. these conditions, however, the Operation Of the device is the same for any appreciable movement, which will open either sash over and above that provided for by the particular a-djustment desired will cause a giving of an alarm.
If an alarm has been given the return of either sash to its normal position will of course relieve the pressure on the Operating leaf and permit the leaf spring to retract it from the push button to stop the ringing of the bell.
The operation Of the device is absolutely positive and the structure is such that it cannot get out of order. All that is required to render this device Operative is that the bell be wound up from time to time in order to keep the spring thereof energized and in condition for operation.
The foregoing detailed description sets forth the invention in its preferred practical form, but the invention is to be understood as fully commensurate with the appended claims.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A burglar alarm comprising a right angular plate having horizontal and Vertical legs and adapted to rest upon the upper edge of a lower window sash with a Vertical leg seated against the adjacent side of the associated window frame, the horizontal leg being provided at its free end with a slot adapted to' engage with a screw at the top face of the lower sash and the Vertical leg supporting at its upper end a hinge pin, a bell mounted On the horizontal leg and having an Operating button extending in the direction of the free end thereof, an Operating leaf, One end of which is pivoted On the hinge pin of the Vertical leg and the other end of which extends to overlie the Operating knob of the bell, an-d a pin adapted'to be inserted in an aperture in the upper sash to overlie the Operating leaf wherebz; the raising of the lower sash or the lowering of the upper sash will cause the pin to pivotally move the Operating leaf into a position to actuate the Operating button of the bell.
2. A burglar alarm comprising a right angular plate having horizontal and Vertical legs and adapted to rest upon the upper edge Of a lower window sash with a Vertical leg seated against the adjacent side of the associated window frame, the horizontal leg being provided at its free end with a slot adapted to engage with a screw at the top face of the lower sash and the Vertical leg supporting at its upper end a hinge pin, a bell mounted on the horizontal leg and having an Operating button extending in the direction of the free end thereof, an Operating leaf, one end of which is pivoted On the hinge pin of the Vertical leg and the other end of which extends to over- Irrespective as to' lie the Operating knob of the bell, and a pin adapted to be inserted in an aperture in the upper sash to overlie the Operating leaf whereby the rai'sing of the lower sash or the lowering of the upper sash will cause the pin tO pivotally move the Operating leaf into a position to actuate the Operating button of the bell, and a spring bearing against the under side of the Operating leaf to normally retract it from the Operating button of the bell.
3. A burglar alarm comprising a right angular plate having horizontal and Vertical legs, a bell mounted On the horizontal leg and having an Operating button extending in the direction of the free end of said leg, and a downwardly inclined Operating leaf, the upper end of which is pivoted to the upper end of the Vertical leg and the lower end portion of which overlies the Operating button of the bell whereby downward pressure on the Operating leaf intermediate its ends will cause the same to be pivotally moved in a direction to operate the bell.
4. A burglar alarm comprising a right angular plate having horizontal and Vertical legs, a bell mounted On the horizontal leg and having an c'perating button extending in the direction of the free end of said leg, and a downwardly inclined Operating leaf, the upper end of which is pivoted to the upper end of the Vertical leg and the lower end portion of which overlies the Operating button of the bell, whereby downward pressure on the Operating leaf intermediate its ends will cause the same to be pivotally moved in a direction to Operate the bell, and a spring bearing against the under side Of the inclined Operating leaf to normally retract said leaf from engagernent with the Operating button of the bell.
5. A burglar alarm comprising a right angular plate'having horizontal and Vertical legs, a bell mounted on the horizontal leg and having an Operating button extending in the direction of the free end of said leg, and a downwardly inclined Operating leaf, the upper end of which is pivoted tO the upper end of the Vertical leg and the lower end portion of which overlies the Operating button of the bell, whereby downward pressure On the Operating leaf intermediate its ends will cause the same to be pivotally moved in a direction to Operate the bell, a spring bearing against the underside Of the inclined Operating A leaf to normally retract said leaf from engageinent Vvith the Operating button of the bell, means for securing said angle plate On the upper edge Of a lower sash, and means adapted to' be carried by the associated upper sash to engage with and actuate the Operating leaf when the said upper sash is lowered Or the said lower sash is raised.
