'I'his invention relates to self-supporting, selfguiding rotary oil well drilling, apparatus and "particularly to that type embodying two rotary drill bits, two rotary drill stems therefor and an operating block for operating the said rotary drill bits and stems, a-gatherer, container and retainer for drill bit cuttings, a propelling shaft therefor and differential gears for operating the said shaft, and electrically driven motors for operating the aforesaid mechanism, however, while the present invention is embodied in an apparatus of this type, there are certain features which may of course be utilized in rotary oil well drilling apparatus different from the specic form shown, and other means of power such as steam, hydraulic or compressed air pressure may be utilized in actuating and rotating the drill bits and other mechanism in connection with the operation of the aforesaid rotary oil well drilling apparatus.
Generally stated the primary object of my invention is to provide a self-supporting, self-guiding rotary oil well drilling apparatus the actuating and operating power for which is propelled within the said apparatus itself and to provide in such an apparatus a gathering and retaining device for gathering and retaining drill bit cuttings; an apparatus of the ltype stated eliminates the necessity of a connected line of drill stems extending from top to bottom of drill hole. The gathering and retaining device for drill bit cuttings modiiies the dependency on water circulated under pressure as a means for removing drill bit cuttings; thus the cost of drill hole is reduced as compared with former methods of rotary oil well sr drilling; the reduction in cost being brought about o by reduction in time and labor required in drilling.
Stated more in detail, one object of the present invention is to provide a novel rotary oil well drilling apparatus ,composed of parts so constructed, arranged and assembled that the apparatus is adaptable in drilling oil Wells at various. depths and especially adaptable in drilling oil wells at unusually deep depths and to provide in such an 5 apparatus a novel gathering and retaining device for gathering and retaining drill bit cuttings, and
to provide in such an apparatus a series of electrically driven motors for the operation of rotary drill bits and other operating mechanism in con- 50 nection with the said rotary oil Well drilling apparatus.
With the foregoing and other objects in view,
the 'nature of whichwill become apparent as the .description proceeds, the invention consists in the 55 novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a sectional view taken on a. plane extending vertically and centrally through oil well drilling apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention.
