SGlaims. (01. 304-20) The invention relates to scaffolding and more particularly to a scafiolding for the laying of roofs or roof covering material.
The object of the invention isto provide a V r scaffolding of light weight construction which maybe easily carried from onejobto another and quickly placed in position on a roof and shifted to different positions on the roof when desired. Moreparticularly, the invention comprises two or more platform supporting units which are formed as ladder-like structures that are adapted-to be supported on edge above the roof so as to take boards between them to form a platform above the roof surface to support the operator or operators laying the roofing material. A further object of the invention is to provide a scaffolding unit in the form of a ladder having diagonally disposed platform receiving rungs and which ladder may comprise one or more sections to accommodate different widths of roof.
The invent-ion further consists in the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.

Referring to the drawings, the scaffolding embodying the invention includes two or more platform supporting units I0.
Each of the units [0 may comprise one or more sections II and each section II is a ladder-like structure having stays l2 and rungs l3 connect- 45 ing said stays and in addition rungs [4 extending .diagonally between the stays and the rungs l3.
Where these units are formed of a plurality of sections, adjacent sections are joined together to form an extended unit by tubular extensions 50 I5 secured to one of the sections and. into which the ends I6 of the adjacent section telescope, and in order to hold these jointed parts securely together releasable ties may be provided connecting adjacent rungs of adjacent sections to- 55 gether. These ties are here shown as formed by a band metal member I! pivotally anchored at one end to one of the rungs and a releasable hook 48 connected at one end to the free end of the band member I! and adapted to engage the other rungto be connected and when so engaged be locked in position by a clip or ring 19 slidably mounted on the member l'i and'adapted to he slipped over the free end of the hook [8 as shown more particularly in Fig. 7.
Each scaffolding unit is adapted to- 'be supported on edge above the roof, and for this purpose two-or rnore supports 20' are provided. Each of these supports has a supporting foot member '25, an upright member 22, and diagonal brace members 23 and 24, these parts preferably being formed of angle iron pieces riveted or welded together. The foot member 2| may have holes for receiving nails 25 or other temporary fastening means for securing it to the roof, it being noted, however, that for each scaffolding unit only one of its supports need be nailed to the roof during operation, and this is usually the upper support. The uprights 22' each have spaced hooks 26 secured thereto at one side, and
each of these hooks cooperates with the uprights to form stay receiving pockets in which the stays are mounted at any desired position along their length as shown in Fig. 4. In addition to prevent any shifting of the unit relative to its support, each support has a lengthwise extending rung receiving hook 21 adapted to engage one of the rungs l3.
Thus the brackets or supports 2% support the units ID on edge above and parallel to the roof, and with most roofs this places the rungs I4 either in horizontal .plane or approaching such a plane so that boards 28 may be laid at their ends on alined diagonally disposed rungs l4 and thus form a working platform for the operator or operators engaged in laying or removing the roofing material on or from the roof. While three units are shown in Fig. 2, it will be understood that two units may be used where the space between them is sufficient to carry one platform member the length of a roof but that for longer roofs more units will be necessary.
The sections II are here shown as formed of metal parts, the stays being hollow metal squares, and the rungs metal tubes welded at their ends to the stays.
Where the roof isvery steep, the rungs 13 may be used as the platform supports.
I desire it to be understood that this invention is not to be limited to any particular form or arrangement of parts except insofar as such limitations are included in the claims.
What I claim as my invention is: 1. In a deviceof the character described, a

In a device of the character described, a platform carrying structure comprising a ladderlike unit having stays and rungs, a support for said unit comprising a base and an upright on which said unit is mounted on edge above the roof, saidupright provided with stay engaging hooks and a rung engaging hook.
7. In a scaffolding structure, the combination of a plurality of spaced platform receiving units,
. said units being formed .of ladder-like'sections having telescopically jointedconnections, and
means for tieing together the sections at said joints, and supports'for said units supporting the same on edge above the roof. g
