Application October 1, 1935,- Serial No. 42,997
j 7 Claims. (01. 206-45) This invention relates to display boxes of cardboard or other relatively stiff sheet material adapted for supporting indisplay positions, as
on a retail sales counter, "a plurality of small individual packages of goods such, for example; as candy, salted nuts'or the like, and more particularly to boxes of that character providing a plurality of compartments in each of which several such package'smaybe arranged in tiers one tire stock of goodsin the box'may be maintained on display and individual packages re-' moved for sale or examination when desired; Boxes of thisgene'ral type usually comprise a transversely extending partition wall dividing the space within the box into front and rear com-' partments and thus separating adjacent tiers-of packages, as'well as a suitable insert disposed in the bottom of the rear compartment to provide an elevated false bottom therefor and thereby raise the goods therein somewhat above the goods in the front compartment, so that the upper parts of the packages in the rear compartment are rendered visible above and behind those'in the front one.
Boxes of this general character are satisfactory when the front and the rear compartments are filled or substantially filled with goods on display as the partition separating the compartments is then afforded adequate support by the goods. But when all or most of the packages in either the front or rear compartment have been ,removed therefrom, those remaining in the other compartment frequently bear against the partition withsufiicient force to displace it and permit the packages to fall over or become disarranged from their proper display positionin the box.
A principal object of the present invention, therefore, is to provide a box of, the character aforesaid including a transverse partition dividing it into front and rear compartments but embodying means for holding the partition in up right position in the box even when one or both compartments are; devoid of or only partially filled with goods. I
A further object of the invention is to provide a box embodying means cooperative with the transverse partition for retaining the latter upright in the box and a rear display flap adapted for disposition relatively to said means in such manner that it will be retained thereby in proper display position with relation to the remainder of the box. I
Other objects, purposes and, advantages of the invention will hereinafter more fully appear or be understood from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. l is a top plan view of the cut and scored box blank prior to being formed up into thecompleted box;
Fig. 2 is a like view of the blank for forming an insert which may be disposed in the rear compartment of the box to elevate the goods therein with relation to those in the front compartment; Fig.3 is a transverse section on theline 33 in Fig. 4 of theformedp insert disposed therein; v
Fig. 4; is a front elevation of the said box, and Fig. 5is a fragmentary top plan View thereof.
lines to indicate score lines in the blanks shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
v Referring now more particularly to the draw ing, the box shown therein is made of relatively heavy cardboard although any other suitable stiff sheet material may be employed if preferred, the customary blanking and like operations being utilized for making the box and insert'blanks and providing therein the desired score lines and folds in the ordinary Way. p The blank B of which the box proper is formed comprises a substantially rectangular rear wall I to one edge of which is attached a display flap 2 defined from the rear wall by a score 3. A glue ing tab 4 defined therefrom by a score 5, pro jects from another edge of this wall, while a bottom flap-6 projects from a third finedtherefrom by a score I. The fourth edge of the rear wall adjoins a side wall 8 at score 9, and to one end of this side wall is hinged a bottom tab I I] on score I I and at its opposite end a triangular flap I3 on score I4, a slot I5 being provided in flap I3 for a purpose which will hereafter appear. I
v A front wall I6 is defined from the shorter side edge of. sidewall 8 by a score I! and carries a bottom flap I8 beyondscore I9 and an inner front rein-forcing flap 20. beyond the parallel score 2|; at the opposite edge of this flap beyond score 22 is a bottom reinforcing flap 23 and in turn beyond that the partition wall 24 from which it is separated by score 25. I
At the opposite end of front wall I6 and hinged thereto at score 26, is another side wall 21 similar but oppositely disposed with respect. to side wall 8, this wall carrying at one of its ends a box with the formed-up edge and is detriangular fiap 28 defined from it by score 29 and provided with a slot 30 and a bottom tab 3|, defined by score 32, at its other end.
For purposes which will hereinafter appear, the bottom flaps 6 and I8 attached to the rear and front walls are respectively provided with cooperative slots 34 and tongues 35 for insertion in the latter, while the side edges of partition 24 near its outeror free extremity are preferably slightly out out or indented as at 36, 3B.
The blank B, having been cut and scored substantially as heretofore described, may be ma= nipulated up the box: It is first bent at right angles on scores 9, l1 and 26 and gluing tab 4 then bent on score 5 and glued or otherwise mechan-icallyse' cured along the outer or free edge of side wall 21 so as to maintain the rear and front walls I, I6 andthe two side walls 8, 21 respectively in substantial parallelism. The bottom tabs I'll, 3| are now folded inwardly into the area defined by the said walls and the bottom flaps .6, l8 folded over them and secured together by entering tongues 35 in slots 34. Next the flaps 20, 23 are folded oppositely inwardly and partition 24 folded upwardly approximately parallel to the front and rear walls as shown in Fig. 3 so that the partition divides the box into two substantially equal transverse compartments a, b. The rear compartment a is preferably provided with a false bottom or insert desirably formed from a blank B of the character of that shown in Fig. 2, and thus comprising side fiaps 3.1 and end-flaps 38 carrying reinforcing tongues 39 which cooperate to support the central panel 40 in thebox when the fiaps and tongues are folded along. the scores 41, 42 to produce a rectangular open boxlike structure which may be inverted and fitted into the bottom of the rear compartment a for supporting the goods therein at a level above that of the goods in the front compartment.
The support for, partition 24 to which reference has been made is aiforded by triangular flaps l3 and 28 which are next folded inwardly .and downwardly in such manner as to enterthe ends of the partition in their slots l5 and 30, the inner ends of which are engaged by the shoulders at the ends of the cut-outs 36. After the partsare. so arranged, triangular flaps l3 and 28 tend to spring. away from the side walls to some extent, exaggerated in the drawing, and thus provide relatively firm fore-and-aft support for the partition whereby collapse or material inclination of the latter toward the front of the box through pressure of the goods in the rear compartment after removal of those in the front compartment is prevented while its collapse or material inclination in the opposite direction is similarly prevented, though in this .case aided to some extent by the false bottom, although of course in practice it is usually customary to remove the goods from the front compartment first.
These triangular flaps I3, 28 are moreover of assistance in retaining the display flap '2, attached to the upper edge of the rear wall, in display position, i. e., folded inwardly and downwardly on score 3 against the rear wall, since the parts are preferably so proportioned that it may be readily inserted behind the rear vertical edges of the flaps and thereby held substantially flat against that wall as best shown in Figs. 3 and 4;
While I have herein described my invention with considerable particularity and especially with-reference to a box of specific character havas follows in the operation of forming the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim anddesire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States:

reinforcing fiaps interposed between the lower edge of the partition and the upper edge of the front operative to retain the lower edge of the partition in spaced relation to the front and back of the box, and flaps carried by the sides having slots receiving the upper portions of the partition operative to retain it in substantial parallelism with the front and back.
2. A display box comprising front and rear walls, a bottom, and side walls having their upper edges extending upwardly and rearwardly from the front wall, slotted triangular flaps depending from said edges of the a partition extending substantially from one side wall to the other engaged in the slots in said fiaps to thereby hold the partition in substantially upright positionin the box.
3. A display box comprising front and rear walls, a bottom, and side walls having their upper edges extending upwardly and rearwardly from the front wall, slotted flaps inwardly depending from the upper edges of the side walls, and a partition extending substantially from one side wall to the other having notches at its upper lateral edges cooperative with the slots in said flaps to hold the partition in substantially upright position in the box.
4. In a display box having a bottom, front, sides, and back, an upstanding partition interposed between the front and back of the box having notches at its upper corners, and fiaps carried by the sides having slots receiving the notched corners of the partition to thereby retain the latter in upstanding position.
.5. A display box comprising a front and a rear wall, a display panel hinged to the latter, a bottom, side walls, slotted flaps inwardly depending from the latter, and a partition extending substantially from one side wall to the other and engaged in the slots in the flaps to thereby hold it in substantially upright position, said flaps operating to hold the display panel adjacent the rear wall when said panel is folded downwardly into substantial parallelism therewith.
6. A display box comprising a front and a rear wall, a display panel hinged to the latter, a bottom, side walls, slotted flaps inwardly depending from the latter, and a partition extending substantially from one side wall to the other and engaged in the slots in the flaps to thereby hold it in substantially upright position, said display panel being engageable between the rear edges of said flaps and the rear wall of the box when folded downwardly to display position.
I. A box blank comprising substantially rectangular portions respectively adapted to form the front and back of a box, interengageable portions respectively carried by said portions coside walls, and r operable to form the bottom of the box, other portions adapted to form the sides of the box having slotted triangular flaps adapted to be folded inwardly toward the respectively adjacent sides of the box, a portion carried by the front wall portion adapted to overlie said wall and a.
