PATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in trousers construction, and it relates more particularly to the construction of the front opening of trousers.

The object of my invention is to provide trousers construction which will be easier to produce and which will be neater in appearance and more serviceable in use, and which will be generally more desirable than the forms of construction heretofore employed.

Another object of my invention is to so construct trousers as to minimize the cost of production and to facilitate the opening and closing and to generally improve the construction.

With the above and other objects in'view, my

' invention consists of a trousers construction in which the front ap of the opening of the trousers is formed on the inside of the same cloth as of which the garment itself is formed, that is, what is known as self-cloth, and in which the link-carrying or scoop-carrying tapes of the closure fastener are generally concealed by the self-cloth.

My invention further relates to other novel g features and details of construction, all of which willl appear more fully from the following description and accompanying drawing.

I am aware that my invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and I therefore desire the present embodiment to be considered in all respects asillustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description Figure 4 represents a fragmentary elevational View of the outer face of the inner flap or iiy of the trousers embodying my invention, shown on a much enlarged scale.

Figure 5 represents a fragmentary elevational View of the inner face of the outer flap or iiy of the trouser construction embodying my invention also shown on a similarly enlarged scale.

Figure 6 represents the juxtaposed or coacting faces of the inner and outer flaps or flies of the trousers embodying my invention, with parts broken away so as to permit the showing of the upper and lower ends of each of these members.

According to my invention, I provide a separate fly strip 'I of the same cloth Vas of which the garment is made, that is, what is generally known as self-cloth. provided with a longitudinalslit generally along the line 8 for a distance approximately equal to the length ofv the-fastener tape to be used. This slit preferably terminates below the upper end of the strip 1, as for instance=at 9, and may also terminate short of the lower end of said strip. A strip of lining fabric I0 is sewed to the outer border zone II of the slit 8 by means of a layer of sewn stitches I2, with the edge portion I3 of the lining strip I8 turned inwardly to a suitable extent as indicated particularly in Figure 3.

The balance of the widthof the strip I0 is then extended through the slit. I'he tape I4 of one of the two rows of links is then also inserted in the slit 8 as indicated in Figure 3 and the cut edge or marginal zone I5 of theslit is then turned inwardly to a slight extent and the inturned edge sewed-to the tape I4, the strip I0 and the inner reinforcing iiy I 6 of any suitable fabric or teintile or other material. Thereafter the cloth strip 1 is sewed to the edge zone I'I of the front portion I8 of the trousers by means of a row of stitches I9 applied through the two marginal Zones while the two cloth pieces 'I and II8 are turned inside out with respect to each other. The cloth strip 'I and the front cloth portion I8 of the trousers are then folded with respect to each other, more or less about the seam formed by the stitches I9 or slightly adjacent to such seam -with the outer edge 20 of the reinforcing ply I6 extending either into the fold of the cloth strip 1 or into the fold 2| of the cloth I8. Thereafter, the inner longitudinal marginal Zone or portion 22 of the cloth strip 'I is sewed to the front cloth portion or pa'nel of the trousers by means of a row of stitches 23which may be extended through, or which may be a blind stitch invisible from the outside.

If desired, the edge 24 of the cloth strip 'I may be bound either by turning it in and stitching it, or by means of a serging stitch 25 as indicated in Figures 1, 3 and 5.

Likewise, the strip] may be extended only to approximately the juncture line between the top of the trousers andthe waist band, and possibly slightly beyond, so as t6 be included in the seam between the waist band and the, body of the trousers. The inner iiy, designated generally by the numeral 30, is formed of a cloth '3| which is extended under the marginal, zone 32 of the right side 33 of the frontof the trousers to an l extent suiiicient to form a seam, and said marginal zone 32 vis on the other hand, turned inwardly a. slight extent, as indicated particularly' -layer of sewn stitches indicated by 38 is ex-4 tended through both cloth pieces of the tape 36 as well as the inturned marginal zone 3.9 of the lining. By this means the tape I4 aswell as the tape 36 are set into cloth plies and are concealed thereby, so that the two rows of links appear to extend from, or to project from, opposite cloth surfaces of the same material as the body of the garment. The cloth strip 3| may be extended to the juncture line 4|! of the body and waistband 4|, or it may be extended to thetop 42 being then in turn seamed to the waist band along the line 43.

While the fabric strips 1 and 3| are in the preferred embodiment formed of what in the trade is generally referred to as self cloth, that is, of the same cloth of which the garment is formed, yet these strips may be formed of other fabrics. Y

Having thus described my invention, what I hereby claim yas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. In trousers, a front opening including two juxtaposed trousers portions adapted to be connected and disconnected* from each other for clos/ing and opening the front of the trousers, one of said juxtaposed trousers portions including a layer of self-cloth longitudinally interrupted, a scoop-carrying tape of a slide fastener and a strip of lining fabric extending together through said layer of 4self--cloth and said line of interruption, with the tape substantially concealed behind said layerv of self-cloth and with the scoops projecting externally therefrom, the lining strip overlying the outer surface of the selfcloth so as to protect the self-cloth from the scoops. a line of stitching securing the tape and lining strip to the self-cloth at one side of the line of interruption, and `another line of stitching securing the lining strip to the self-cloth at the other side of said line.

2. In trousers, a strip of self-cloth fastened to the inner face of the trousers along two spaced lines, one of which is substantially at the front opening of the garment, said strip having a slit therein, a scoop-carrying tape fastened to said strip and lying on the face thereof intermediate such strip and the trousers and so arranged that it projects through said slit and that the scoops lie on the opposite side of a portion of said strip from said tape, a backing strip extending through said slit and lying on the side of said tape toward the front of the trousers and connected to said strip of self cloth at both sides of said slit as well as to said tape on one side of the slit.

3. In trousers, the construction as set forth in claim 2, together with a second backing strip 'extending between the strip of self-cloth and the front of the trousers for substantially the en tire width of the strip of self-cloth and fastened to the strip of self-cloth, the backing strip and the front of the trousers.

4. In trousers, a front opening including two juxtaposed trousers portions adapted to be connected and disconnected from each other for closing and opening the front of the trousers, oneof said juxtaposed trousers portions including a layer of self-cloth longitudinallyinterrupted, a scoop-carrying .tape of a slide fastener and a strip of lining fabric extending together through said layer of self-cloth and said line of inter- WILLIAM sHULIK.
