The aim of the present invention is to pro vide an improved register whereby the velocity, volume and deflection of conditioned air admitted into the room may be very nicely controlled, objectionable drafts and currents within the room are eliminated or at least reduced to a minimum, and the air conditioning unit may be made, smaller.
With a register constructed in accordance with the present invention, the incoming air is effectively and thoroughly mixed with and brought to the temperature of the room air in such manner that objectionable drafts are eliminated, and a higher velocity of the injected air and a greater initial difference between the temperatures of the room air and the injected air may be had, thus permitting the use of a smaller-air conditioning unit.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out more in detail hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinationof elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplifled in the construction hereinafter set forth and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the appended claims.

the latter being termed, for the purpose of convenience, as fixed deflectors. It is to be understood that this arrangement is shown by way of illustration only as the deflectors may bead- J'ustable relative tothe baffles and any suitable means may be provided for relatively adjusting the deflectors and bafiles, The deflectors are in-, terposed between adjacent bafiles. i The opposing sides of the baffles and deflectors are similarly slots between the several members are inclined. The slots, at opposite sides 'of each baille, are inclined towards each other, and the slots are spaced apart so that the streams of air, after they have passed through the register, will meet so in advance of the front face of the register.
In the present illustrative disclosures, the deflectors are of generally triangular shape with one apex extending rearwardly to a position between adjacent baflles Ill. The walls l2 of each 35 baiile are inclined correspondingly to the inclination of the opposing side walls of the deflectors. The front face l2 of each baflie is relatively wide.
In effect, the baflles are in the form of truncated triangles positioned reversely to the deflectorsflm The slots of the several pairs between the deflectors and the baflies are designated by the numerals l3, l4, and i5. It will be observed that the forward portions of the slots of each pair are spaced apart by the width of the front face I! 5 of a baiile, and the slots of each pair are inclined towards each other so that the streams passing through the slots will meet at a substantial distance in front of the register. As will be seen from Figs. 2, 3, and 5, the streams of each and 50 the front face 12' of the intervening bafile define a more or less triangular space, one in front of each baiile, and the room air is drawn into these spaces and mixed with the injected air. With this arrangement, there will be a considerable 56 turbulence along the lines at which the several streams meet, and a high degree of aspiration of the room air is had so that the room air is drawn into the injected air and thoroughly mixed and then dispersed throughout the room without objectlonable drafts.
The velocity and volume with which the incoming air is discharged into the room may be con trolled by moving the movable baffles at right angles to the general plane of the fixed deflectors to thereby change the combined areas of the slots, and the direction in which the air is discharged into the room may be very nicely controlled by moving the baffles laterally with respect to the deflectors. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2, the register is shown in full open position and with the baflles in central position so that the air is discharged directly forwardly, while in Fig. 3 the baflles are shown as adjusted so as to deflect the air to one side. Obviously, the air can be deflected to either side to the desired degree by properly adjusting the baflles. In Fig. 4, the register is shown closed. In Fig. 5 is shown an arrangement similar to what is shown in Figs. 2 and 3, but in this case, the rear walls of the baffles are curved so as to give a stream line eflect.
I have shown, by way of example, in Figs. 6, '7, and 8, practical arrangements which may be employed for adjusting the bailles, it being understood that this disclosure is by way of illustration only as the specific means for adjusting the baflies are unimportant and other arrangements than those shown may be employed. Referring to these figures, the register is shown as having a flanged frame 28 for supporting the operating parts of the register and a face frame It telescoping on the back frame 28. The deflectors I I, which may be made of sheet metal, may be secured to the face frame in any suitable manner, as by means'of welding, for example. The movable baflies (which also, by preference, are formed of sheet metal) are secured at their opposite ends to angle irons l1 from which project spaced pins I8. At the opposite ends of the movable baffles are slidable angle irons |9 provided with slots 20 through which the pins l8 extend, these slots being at right angles to the length of the members |9 and the plane of the register. The angle irons l9 areadjusted lengthwise in unison by a right and left hand screw 2| suitably journaled in a bracket 22 and associated with the respective members l9 by links 23 and levers 24. Carried by the screw 2| is a worm wheel 25 with which meshes a worm 26, the forward polygonal end 21 of which extends forwardly through the face frame so that it may be manually turned by means of a socket wrench or the like. The mechanism justdescribed is employed for adjusting the baffle members in the plane of the register so as to change the relative sizes of the slots of each pair and thereby control the deflection of the air.
For the purpose of moving the baffle members at right angles to the plane of the register and thereby change the aggregate area of the slots and thus control the velocity and volume of the incoming air, the following operating mechanism may be employed. The numerals 30 designate channel irons located adjacent opposite ends of the bafiies. One web of each of these irons is provided with slots 3| disposed at right angles to and adapted to intersect the previously described slots 20. These channel irons are supported for movement forwardly and backwardly by means of links 32, one end of each link being pivoted to the flange of the back frame and the other end of each link being pivotally connected to a web of the channel iron. The channel irons are adapted to be adjusted by means similar to that illustrated for adjusting the angle irons I9. As shown in Fig. 7, the channel irons are connected by levers 33 and links 34 to a right and left hand screw 35 adapted to be turned through a worm wheel 36 and a worm 31. From the foregoing description, it will be seen that, when it is desired to adjust the movable ballles to obtain the desired deflection of air, the screw 2| is turned whereby the angle irons H! are moved longitudinally. When this is done, the side edges of the slots 2|! engage the pins l9 and cause these pins to move, the pins being guided in their movements by the edges of the slots 3|. When it is desired to adjust the combined area of the slots, and thus control the velocity or volume of the air, the screw 35 is turned, thereby causing swinging movement of the channel irons 30. When these irons are swung, they advance or retreat, as the case may be, from the front of the register, and the edges of the slots 3| cause the pins |8 to move in the direction of the length of the slots 20, the edges of the latter slots then guiding the pins.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparentlywidely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shownin the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a control register of the character described, a register having a front face and a set,
of laterally spaced members rearwardly thereof, a second set of relatively adjustable members respectively located between the members of the first set and positioned generally in side by side spaced alternating relation to the members of said first mentioned set and rearwardly of said face and forming a plurality of pairs of slots, the slots of each pair being spaced apart by one of said adjustable members and converging towards each other as they progress towards the front of ,the register so as to cause the streams of air to meet along lines spaced in advance of the front face of the register.
2. In a register of the character described, a set of spaced apart parallel batlie members, and a second set of baiiie members respectively interposed between the members of said first set, the members of one set being adjustable relative to those of the other set, the opposite side faces of the members of one set being convergent with respect to the front of the register, and the opposite side faces of the other set being divergent with respect to the front of the register, whereby a plurality of pairs of slots are provided between vergently spaced apart so that streams of air passing therethrough will be directed towards each other and caused to meet forwardly of and in spaced relation to the front of the register.
3. In a register of the character described, a plurality of spaced apart parallel deflectors the opposite side walls of which are inclined away from each other towards the front of the register,
the baflle members, slots of each pair being consaid slots being arranged in pairs and the slots of each pair being inclined towards each other so that the streams passing therethrough will meet in front of the register andin vspaced relation 10 thereto.
4. In a register of the character described, a plurality of spaced apart parallel deflectors the opposite side walls of which are inclined away from each other towards the front of the register,
1 baifle members interposed betweensaid deflectors and each having a front wall of substantial width, said baiile members having their side walls inclined towards each. other towards the iront oi the register, there being slots between the opposed walls of the deflectors and bame members, said slots being arranged in pairs and the slots of each pair being inclined towards each other so that the streams passingtherethrough will meet at an appreciable distance in front of .the register, and means for adjusting one set of said members relative to the other set so as to vary the total area of the slots and the relative proportions thereof.
