Description

H. M. BARBER June 1, 1937.
SHEET FED MULTICOLOR ROTARY PRINTING PRESS Filed Sept. 17, 1935 llillwrw I Um" h "Ill. INVENTUR IYM/ 14 1a I y )ajwrq kirarf ATTORNEYS Patented June 1, 1937 SHEET FED MULTICOLOR ROTARY PRINT- ING PRESS Howard M. Barber, Pawcatuck, Conn., assignor to C. B. Cottrell & Sons Company, Westerly,
R. I., a corporation Application September Claims.
My invention comprises a rotary printing unit, means at one side thereof for feeding sheets thereto, a. combined heating and cooling unit, means for transferring the printed sheets from 5 the printing unit to the combined heating and cooling unit and means for delivering the sheets therefrom toa predetermined point at the opposite side from the source of sheet supply.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawing which represents a diagrammatic side elevation of so much of the printing press as will give a clear understanding of my invention.
The rotary printing unit in the present instance comprises an impression cylinder I, its sheet taking devices 2, four form cylinders 3, 4, 5, 6 and their respective inking mechanisms 1, 8, 9, I0; said form cylinders being arranged around the upper side of' their impression cylinder.
The source of sheet supply is shown as a pile II and the means for feeding the sheets therefrom to the impression cylinder I includes a feed table I2 and a rotary sheet feed cylinder I3 whose sheet taking devices M are operable in the usual manner to take the sheets from the table l2 and transfer them to the impression cylinder sheet taking devices 2.
The combined heating and cooling unit in the present instance comprises a heating cylinder l5 and its sheet taking devices l6, and a cooling cylinder= l1 and its sheet taking devices [8.
A rotary carrier I9 is provided with sheet taking devices 20 arranged to transfer the printed sheets from the impression cylinder sheet taking devices 2 to the heating cylinder sheet taking devices IS.
The means which I have shown for'delivering the sheets from the combined heating and cooling unit to a predetermined point upon the opposite side from the source of sheet supply comprises two coacting carriers 2| and 22 traveling in endless paths. The endless carrier 2| is provided with sheet taking devices 23 arranged to take the sheets from the sheet taking devices 18 of the cooling cylinder l1 and to transfer the sheets to the sheet taking devices 24 of the endless carrier 22, said sheet taking devices 24 serving to deliver the carriers to a predetermined point which is, in the present instance, a delivery pile 25. The sheets are maintained on the surface of the heating cylinder I5 by rollers 26 and upon the surface of the cooling cylinder I! by the rcliers 2'5.
of Delaware 17, 1935, Serial No. 40,878
A suitable hinged shield 28 traveling on a track 29 may be employed for preventing the heat from the heating cylinder I5 coming in contact with the impression cylinder I.
It will be understood that any suitable heating medium, such as steam, may be supplied to the. heating cylinder l5 and that any suitable cooling medium, such as water, may be supplied to the cooling cylinder 11.
It will also be understoodthat any well known or approved quick drying inks may be used in the printing unit.
In the present invention, the sheet feeding means, the printing unit, the combined heating and cooling unit and the sheet delivery means are all located in the same longitudinal vertical plane with the-combined heating and cooling unit located below the printing unit.
It will also be noted that the sheet feeding ing cylinder of the combined heating and cool-' ing unit. By providing the shield between the impression cylinder of the printing unit and the heating cylinder of the combined heating and cooling unit the impression cylinder is not only prevented from being adversely affected by the heat rising from the heating cylinder but also the ink'distribution is protected from the heat rising from the said heating cylinder.
What I claim is:
1. In a sheet fed multicolor rotary printing press, an impression cylinder, form cylinders, inking mechanisms, means for feeding sheets to the impression cylinder-from a source of sheet supply at one side thereof, a heating cylinder, a
cooling cylinder, an interposed means separate from the cooling cylinder arranged to transfer the sheets from the impression cylinder to the heating cylinder, and coacting sheet delivery carriers traveling in endless paths and arranged to deliver the sheets to a predetermined point at the opposite side from the source of sheet supply.
2. In a. sheet fed multicolor rotary printing press, an impression cylinder, form cylinders,
inking mechanisms, means for feeding sheets to the impression cylinder from a source of sheet supply at one side thereof, a heating cylinder, a cooling cylinder, a rotary carrier arranged to transfer the sheets from the impression cylinder to the heating cylinder, and coacting sheet delivery carriers traveling in, endless paths and arranged to deliver the sheets to.a predetermined point at the opposite side from the source of sheet supply. I
3. In a sheet fed multicolor rotary printing press, an impression cylinder having sheet taking devices, form cylinders, inking, mechanisms, means for feeding sheets to the sheet taking devices of the impression cylinder from a source of sheet supply at one side thereof, a heating .cyl-
inder having sheet taking devices, a cooling cylinder having sheet taking devices, an interposed means separate from the cooling cylinder and having sheet taking devices arranged to transfer the sheets from the sheet taking devices of the impression cylinder to the sheet taking devices of the heating cylinder, and coacting sheet delivery carriers having sheet taking devices traveling in endless paths and arranged to deliver the sheets to a predetermined point at the opposite side-from the source of sheet supply.
4. In a sheet fed multicolor rotary printing press, an impression cylinder having sheet taldng devices, form cylinders, inking" mechanisms, means for feeding sheets to the sheet taking devices of the impression cylinder from a source of sheet supply at one side thereof, a heating cylinder having sheet taking devices, a cooling cylinder having sheet taking devices, a rotary carrier having sheet taking devices'arranged to transfer the sheets from the sheet taking devices of the impression cylinder to the sheet taking devices of the'heating cylinder, and coacting sheet delivery carriers having sheet taking devices traveling in endless pathsand arranged to deliver the'sheets to a predetermined point at the opposite side from the source of sheet supply. 5. In a sheet fed multicolor rotary printing press, an impression cylinder, form cylinders, inking mechanisms, means for feeding sheets to the impression cylinder from a source of sheet supply atone side thereof, a heating cylinder, a cooling cylinder, an interposed means separate from the cooling cylinder arranged to transfer the sheets from the impression cylinder to the heating cylinder, coacting sheet delivery carriers traveling in endless paths and arranged to deliver the sheets to a predetermined point at the opposite side from the source of sheet supply, and a shield located between the heating cylinder and impression cylinder. l
