J. P. ANDERSON CAR CONSTRUCT ION Filed Dec. 15, 1933 ATT NEY Patented June 1, 1937 UNITED STATES UAR CONSTRUCTION John 1?. Anderson, Koppel, Pa., assignor, by mesne assignments, to Pressed Steel Car Company,
Inc., Pittsburgh, Pa.,

2 Claims.
The invention pertains to railway dump cars used in ditching service and provided with side and end doors, the end doors opening outwardly and downwardly. The invention particularly pertains to the end construction of the car wherein end posts are provided at the corners of the car serving as abutments for the end and side doors.
An object of the invention is to provide a post for a car of the character described which serves to position the end and side doors and to provide a locking means to maintain the end doors in closed position independent of the operation of the side doors.
In cars of the character described, the side walls of the body are formed of doors and the end walls of the body are provided with doors extending substantially the width of the body and opening outwardly and downwardly to provide a bridge between the cars upon which a ditcher machine moves during the loading of the car bodies.
Such a car is claimed and described in my pending application, Serial No. 702,533, filed December 15, 1933. In such cars the side doors are independent in operation from the end doors and any convenient mechanism may be used to operate these side doors. Such mechanism forms no part of the present invention and is not shown on the drawing.
The end doors are independent in operation of the side doors and it is, therefore, necessary to provide a means for supporting the end door in raised position which will function whilst the side doors are opening and closing during the tilting of the car body.
Referring now to the drawing, Fig. 1 shows in elevation, the end of a car of the character described; Fig. 2 shows a partial side elevation of the car in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of a portion of the corner post showing the locking 40 means for the end door; Fig. 4 is a plan View of the mechanism shown in Fig. 3.
Referring now in detail to the drawing where like reference characters refer to like parts, reference character I indicates a car having the 45 usual underframe 2, supported on trucks 3, a body 4 mounted on the underframe and adapted to tilt about either side thereof on trunnions 5 secured to the body and underframe adjacent each side thereof. The side walls of the body are formed 50 of doors 6 adapted to open outwardly and downwardly as the body is tilted, and are controlled by a suitable means forming no part of the present invention. The end walls of the body are formed of doors I hinged adjacent the floor of the body 55 and adapted to open outwardly and downwardly. At each corner of the car and secured adjacent the floor of the body are posts 8 which in the present embodiment of the invention comprise a channel shaped member with the web disposed longitudinally of the body. The outer flange 8 is cut back as shown in Fig. 3 to provide for a door locking mechanism. Secured adjacent the upper end of each post 8 is a bracket 9 comprising a pair of spaced arms 9 and 9 extending" above the flange 8 Secured to the door is an arm l0 adapted to be engaged between the arms 9 and 9 of the bracket 9. Registering openings are provided in the arms of the bracket 9 and the army ID to receive a pin 1 I for securing the arm III in position on the bracket 9. At each end of the door 6 are provided stops l2 engaging the post 8 when the side doors are in raised position.
As will be observed from the drawing, the corner posts 8 are secured to the body independent of each side door and provide an abutment for the side and end doors. It will be apparent that the body can be tilted to either side of the underframe to discharge the lading' and the mechanism provided for controlling the movements of the side doors during the tilting of the car body will function independently of the corner posts. The stop l2 on the side doors, upon engagement with the corner posts 8, positions the side doors and the locking mechanism secured to the corner posts retain the end door in raised position.
When for any purpose it is desired to lower the end doors to extend outwardly of the car body the pin H may be removed and the doors manually moved to position. For the purpose of retaining the pin l i and preventing loss thereof a. chain I3 is secured to the pin and to the corner post 8.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patents is:
1. In a car of the character described, in combination, a body, a door forming the end wall of the body and hinged adjacent the floor thereof for outward movement, a vertically disposed post at each corner of the body, a bracket on the post having outwardly disposed spaced arms, amember on the door engaging between said arms when the door is in raised position and means securing the member between said arms.
2. In a vehicle body in combination, a lading supporting floor, channel shaped vertically disposed posts secured to the body and extending above the floor with their flanges oppositely disposed, a lading retaining wall secured to the body between the posts for movement relative: thereto, a portion of one of the flanges of one of said posts being removed, a latch secured to said post between the fianges adjacent the altered portion of the said flange. and a laterally disposed memher on the wall overlapping the adjacent post and engaging the latch.
