Description

E. L. &QE. FOREMAN. Gangway for Transferring Cattle.
No. 208,164. Patented Sept. 17.1878;
N ENTOR WITNESSES ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIon.
EDYVIN FOREMAN AND EDWARD FOREMAN, OF PENFIELD, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN GANGWAYS FORTRANSFERRING CATTLE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 208,164, dated September 17, 1878; application filed March 8, 1878.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, EDWIN L. FOREMAN and EDWARD FOREMAN, of Penfield, in the county of Ohampaign, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in certain improvements upon the railroad and slaughter-house chute and gates for which Letters Patent No. 150,014. were granted to E. L. Foreman, April 21, 1874, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the chute. Fig. 2, 3, 4, and 5 show different forms of gate used therein.
A represents a chute, provided on the sides with vertical cleats a a to form stops for the gates.
In Fig. 5 I have shown a movable gate capable of being extended lengthwise. It is composed of two shoes, B B, each having a vertical post, 0, and to each post 0 are secured horizontal boards D, forming a gate. The two gates overlap each other, and have vertical cleats b b at or near their inner ends, so arranged that the two gates can be moved outward or inward, as required, to make the entire gate longer or shorter, as required. The gate being provided with shoes will not fall over, and being double it can be lengthened out to accommodate a railroad-chute.
In moving the gate behind a few sheep, cattle, or other stock, up the chute they can be crowded easily up to the top of the chute, and
the balance of the stock will follow rapidly. By placing a movable gate behind the whole drove the stock will be kept moving into the car or slaughter-house rapidly, and with but little trouble to the drover.
In Fig. 2 I have shown a movable gate constructed with two elongated feet, B B, upon each of which is a standard, 0, to nail the boards D to, and also provided with inclined center braces G O and a cleat, d, as shown.
The gate shown in Fig. 3 will answer the same purpose, but is more easily constructed, having but one foot or shoe, B, to keep it from falling over.
The gate shown in Fig. 4 is still cheaper, and made to scare the stock into the chute and separate out stock. It is to be held before the person, and many times to follow up stock to the chute.
This invention being intended as. an improvement upon the Patent No. 150,014 for gangways for transferring cattle above referred to, we do not claim as our invention anything shown and described except the double adjustable gate, which can be arranged at any point in the chute and be accommodated to the width thereof.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The double lengthwise-adjustable gate, consisting of the shoes B B, each having a standard, O, and boards D, with cleats b, in combination with a chute, A, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 17th day of January, 1878.
Witnesses:
