An unique combination holder, handle and sheath for a. razor blade;

Anew and improved cutting implement.

These objects, and other objects which will hereinafter appear, are obtained by the novel arrangement,

combination and construction of elements hereinafter described and claimed. A device embodying the invention is illustrated in the accompanying single sheet of drawings, hereby made a part of this application, and in which;

Like reference characters are used to designate similar parts in the drawing and in the description which follows.

' The present invention comprises a razor blade holder which has a firm attachment for a razor blade and a handle also forming a sheath. The handle and sheath part of the device is indicated by the numeral ID.. The handle it] comprises a sheet of thin spring steel bent to U-shape in cross section.

The blade holder I3 comprises a sheet of spring steel similar to that of the handle It} and bent into a substantially U-shape in cross section. Adjacent to and along the base of the U the aperture of the U is widened so that the holder I3 is adapted to receive the back I4 of a razor blade I5. Away from the closed end of the U-shaped portion of the holder I3 the sides of the holder are pressed together toprovide means as at I6 to grip the blade I5. The outer edges of the gripping means I6 parallel to theedge of the knife I5 are slanted or tapered back from the blade I5 to avoid square edges which would catch on material being cut. Protuberances IT on the narrowed portion I6 of the holder I3 are in position to interlock with indentations I 2 in the handle Ill when the device is closed, to avoid accidental opening of the device. The spread of the two parts It and I3 may be regulated so that it takes a strong pull to move said members apart, the indentations I2 and protuberances I! thus forming a lock preventing a child from opening the device.

At the end of the holder I3 away from protuberances I1 and upon each leg of the U-shaped material is an apertured enlargement I8. The enlargements I8 correspond to the enlargements II on the handle Ill. The enlargements I8 fit between the two enlargements II with the apertures of all four in line.

An eyelet I S-passes through the apertures in the enlargements II and I8 and provides a pivot, joining the handle ID to the blade holder I3.

The razor bladev I5 having back I4 is slipped into the blade holder I3 by sliding the back I4 into the wide base portion of the blade holder I3 and the blade I5 between the gripping portions I6. To hold the blade I5 within the blade holder I3 after it is inserted a clip is provided. The clip 20 is shown in Figure 4 and is U-shaped in section, having depressions 2| on the inside face of each leg, near the open end of the U. The depressions 2I correspond with and lock over protuberances 22 on the outside of the blade holder I3 at the wide part thereof. To insert the blade I5 the clip 25] is turned upward over the back of the holder I3, leaving the end of holder I3 open. After the blade I5 is inserted in blade holder I3 the clip 20 is turned down over the end of holder I3 so that the base of the U- shaped clip 20 closes the open end of the blade holder I3, securing the blade I5 inplace therein. To remove the blade I5 the clip Zll is rotated about the depressions 2| and protuberances 22 to open the end of the blade holder. The

blade l5 may then be slipped out of the blade holder.

A modified form of the device is shown in Figures 6 and 7. The modified form of device has in general the same parts as the device of Figures l to 5, already described. The parts of the modified device are indicated by the same numerals of those of the device already described with 100 added to each numeral. The difference between the two devices lies in the pivot. In the modified device the eyelet I I9 extends through the enlargements Ill and H8 as in the previous device. One enlargement Illa at one side of the handle H0 has the central portion thereof pressed outwardly of the device. Within such outwardly pressed portion and about the eyelet H9 is a lock washer I24. The lock washer I2 keeps the pivotal joint always under pressure and takes up the wear between the respective parts thereof. The lock washer I24 may be used to create a light or heavy friction for pivoting the handle about the blade holder.

At the end of the handle ID or H0 is a hole 23 or I23 cut through the material at the back of the handle to provide means for attaching a string or chain to the device.

When the device is in closed position the handle 10 or H0 covers the edge of blade I I5 and provides a sheath therefor. When the device is opened the end of the handle ID or H0 and the end of the blade holder I3 or H3 adjacent the enlargements and the pivot between the two parts come together at 25 to determine the furthest opening of the device. In this open position the handle I!) or H0 is in effect an extension of the blade holder l3 or H3 and forms a means for ready handling of the device.

In place of the clip 20 in the devices already described, another way of holding the blade in the holder may be used, as shown in Figures 8 and 9. The device of Figures 8 and 9 is the same as that of the preceding figures except that clip 20 is omitted and a tongue 225 is pressed from the back of the blade holder 253 a short distance into the opening of holder H3. The open part of holder H3 is high enough to permit the back 2 of blade 2l5 to be slid up and down therein.

The blade 215 is inserted by slipping it into the holder, passing it beneath tongue 225 until the back 2! of the blade is past the tongue. The blade is then moved upward until the corner of back 2M lies behind the tongue 225. The tongue will then prevent any movement of the blade out of the holder until the blade is moved downward in the holder to free the back 2l4 from the tongue 225.

In addition to accommodating the backed razor blade I 5 heretofore described and illustrated, the holder I3 is adapted to receive and grip an unbacked blade, such as the common two edged flexible blade or the unbacked single edged blade. The tension of the gripping portion I6 is suflicient to prevent displacement of the unbacked blade except in case of a heavy pull, in which case the clip 20 or the tongue 225 will contact the end of the blade and prevent the blade from accidentally pulling out. For removal the blade is moved away from the back of the holder 2|3 so that it will miss the tongue 225.

Where the common form of two edged blade is used the blade may be reversed and the other edge used after one edge is dulled.

What is claimed as new and is desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States is:

l. A blade holder for a backed razor blade, comprising a holding means U-shaped in cross section and having a gripping portion to grip such blade and an enlarged portion to receive the back of such blade, and a sheath U-shaped in cross section and opposed to said holding means and extending about the gripping portion thereof and about the edge of such blade, one end of said sheath being pivoted to one end of said holding means for movement away therefrom to provide a handle, and resilient interlocking fastening means on said sheath and said holding means at the ends thereof away from the pivot to maintain said sheath and holding means in closed position. v

2. A blade holder for a backed razor blade, comprising a holding means U-shaped in cross section and having a gripping portion to grip such blade and an enlarged portion to receive the back of such blade, a sheath U-shaped in cross section and opposed to said holding means and extending about the gripping portion thereof and about the edge of such blade, one end of said sheath being pivoted to one end of said holding means for movement away therefrom to provide a handle, fastening means on said holding means at the end away from the pivot, and other fastening means on said sheath at the end away from the pivot, said two fastening means interlocking upon direct pivotal motion of said holding means and sheath together to hold said sheath in closed position about such blade.

A blade holder for a razor blade, comprising a blade holding means U-shaped in cross section and having a blade gripping portion and having locking protuberances on a surface thereof, and a sheath of resilient material U-shaped in cross section about the edge of such blade and pivoted at one end to one end of said holding means for movement away therefrom to provide a handle, said sheath having locking indentations in a face thereof, said protuberances and indentations resiliently cooperating to hold said sheath about the edge of such blade and being separable by pressure causing portions of said sheath to move resiliently apart.

A blade holder comprising a member U- shaped in cross section and having an open ended recess therein to receive a blade, an outward protuberance on each face of said member near an end thereof and having sides at approximately right angles to the surface of said member, and a blade retaining clip spanning the end of said member extending over said protuberances and having indentations with walls substantially at right angles to the inner surfaces of the clip, said indentations co-operating with said protuberances whereby the clip is pivoted to said member for movement about the end thereof to allow the open end of the recess to be obstructed against displacement of the blade therefrom or opened to allow removal of the blade.
