Filed March 3, 1956 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 JHFEHTOR C3 IDC? Lf/ZUHZ BY T TOR HE Y5 Patented May 11, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in fireplace heaters, and has particular reference to a device for increasing the efficiency of a fireplace so that the heat ordinarily dissipated into the brick walls of the fireplace and alarge amount of heat issuing up the chimney may be conserved and used.
A further object is to produce a device of this character which is readily installed in the ordinary fireplace.
A further object is to produce a device which is economical to manufacture, neat in appearance, and one which will be safe in operation.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the fireplace constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of my device having a portion thereof broken away;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fireplaces While being ornamental are often very ineflicient for the reason that a large part of the heat of the fire is absorbed into the brick and also a large part of the heat passes up the chimney. I have devised means for eliminating this waste and employing the same for general heating purposes.
In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates the ordinary opening in which a fireplace might be positioned. Of course the customary chimney is so arranged as to receive the products of combustion. Within this opening 5 I place a housing 6 preferably a rectangular construction, which housing has centrally positioned therein a fire box 1 having an open front 8, enclosed sides, back, and bottom. A funnel-shaped top 9 conducts the products of combustion to a stack II which enters the ordinary chimney. By referring to Fig. 3 it will be noted that an air space I2 is provided below the bottom of the fire box and that grills l3 are inserted near the top in front of the housing 6. A damper I4 is pivoted in the opening l6 and operated by a handle H. A series of air inlets 'IB permit air to flow in, as indicated by the arrows. A flue damper is shown at 19 and is operated by the handle 2 I.
The result of this construction is that when a fire is placed within the fire box the walls thereof will absorb heat from the fire while the cool air passing around the entire outer surface of the fire box and funnel 9 will absorb this heat which would otherwise be taken up by the bricks of the fireplace, and through thermal action this heat will pass out through the grills l3 and into the room. Therefore, the amount of heat lost in the chimney will be very slight.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes relative to the material, size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:-
In a device of the character described, in combination with a fireplace opening having a damper controlled flue connected therewith, of a rectangular housing positioned in said opening, a substantially rectangular fire box formed within said housing and spaced from the walls and bottom thereof and forming an air inlet beneath said housing and about the sides thereof, grills positioned in said housing covering the air inlet and outlet sections of the housing, and a damper having an upright control handle arranged in the inlet opening adjacent the inlet grill of said housing and capable of controlling the air admitted thereto.
