MEASURING-FAUCET.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 20,799, dated July 6, 1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GILBERT HUBBARD, of Montville, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Measuring-Faucet; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1, is a longitudinal vertical section of my improvement. Fig. 2, is a front end view of do.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
This invention consists in the employment or use of rotating cylinders provided with followers arranged in such relation with the tube of the faucet and connected by suitable mechanism with an index, springs and cutofi as hereinafter described, that liquids may be drawn from a vessel in measured quantities as described.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents the tube of the faucet and B, B, are two cylinders which are connected together, side by side in the same plane. These cylinders are fitted at their back ends in the front end of the tube A, as shown at a, and the front ends of the cylinders are supported by an axis or shaft 12, the outer end of which passes through a circular disk 0, which is attached by a plate (Z, to the tube of the faucet, as shown in Fig. 1.
The interior of the tube of the faucet communicates with the uppermost cylinder B, by a passage a, and the lower cylinder B, communicates with the eduction passage 6, and as the cylinders B, B, rotate they communicate alternately with the passages a, 6. This will be more fully described hereafter.
O, is a shaft the inner bearing of which is in the upper part of the tube A, of the faucet. The front end of the shaft passes through the center of the disk 0. To the outer end of the shaft C, an index D, is attached, and a disk E, which is attached to the disk 0, by rods 7", is just behind the index, and this disk is graduated into a certain number of degrees and forms a dial plate for the index D.
On the outer part of shaft C, and just behind the index D, a ratchet F, is placed, and
a toothed Wheel G, is placed loosely on said shaft, the wheel G, having a pawl g, attached, which pawl catches into the ratchet F.
On the outer end of the axis or shaft Z), of the cylinders, a toothed pinion h, is placed, and this pinion by means of gearing 2', is connected with the wheel G. The gearing is shown clearly in Fig. 2. Around the front part of the shaft O, a barrel or coil spring H, is placed. The inner end of this spring is attached to the shaft O, and the outer end is attached to a pin j, which is placed between the disk 0, and an upright 70. On the shaft O, there is also placed a spiral spring I, and a screw thread 1, is formed on said shaft near its inner end. A nut J, is also placed on the shaft and levers K, L, connect said nut with a slide or cut-off M, which Works in the back part of the passage a.
In each cylinder B, B, a follower N, is placed, and the rods O, of these followers are connected at their outer ends to a lever P, which is pivoted at its center to the axis or shaft 6. A stop m, is attached to the disk 0, the use of which will be presently shown.
The implement is used as follows: By turning the index D, from left to right the spring H, will be wound up, and when the handis removed from the index the spring H, will, through the medium of the gearing i, h, G, and pawl g, and ratchet F, rotate the cylinders B, B, and said cylinders will be rotated a greater or less length of time according as the spring H, is wound up. In drawing the liquid the first thing to be done is to raise the cut-off M, and by so doing the nut is forced on the end of the screw Z, and when the index D, is turned to wind up the spring H, the nut J, is drawn outward and the cut-off fully raised as shown in red Fig. 1. When the cut-off M, is raised the liquid passes up, under pressure of course, through the passage a, into the uppermost cylinder B, and forces outward the follower N, and when the cylinder B, is filled and the follower forced outward, the lower part of the lever P, will be thrust inward free from the stop m, and the spring .H, will rotate the cylinders until the uppermost one B, is brought around in line with the eduction passage 6, and the lower one B, brought in line with the passage a, and as the cylinder B, is being filled the cylinder B, is being discharged its follower of course being forced inward as that of the other cylinder is forced outward, and the liquid passing out from cylinder B, through the passage 6. The stop m, retains the cylinders in proper position. ll hen the spring H, is fully wound up the cylinders B, B, of course stop and the nut J, which by the time the spring H, is relaxed, will be free from the screw thread Z, will be thrown back by the spiral spring I, and the cutoff M, forced down so as to cut off all communication between the interior of the tube A, and the passage a. The dial E, is graduated so as to indicate the distance the index and shaft C, must be rotated in order to draw certain quantities such as a gill, pint, quart, gallon, etc.
Having thus described my invention what I claimas new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
The combination of the passages A, 6, with the rotating cylinders B, B, provided with followers N, connected by the lever P, and. operated through the medium of the gearing 5, h, G, pawl g, ratchet F, and spring H, the above parts being used in connection with the cutoff M, arranged with the nut J, and levers K, L, or other equivalent device, whereby the cut-off may be closed automatically and simultaneously with the cessation of the rotation of the cylinders B, B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
