4 Claims.
The invention relates to an article of furniture such as a table and has for its object to provide a good-looking and neat-appearing table having complete utility as an ordinary table and com- 5 bining therewith the advantages of a cellaret.
In accordance with the invention the table top is provided with a centrally-disposed movable portion and a plurality of trays located beneath and spaced away from the centrally-disposed 10 movable portion. The centrally-disposed movable portion and the trays are carried by a common supporting member. When the table is being used as an ordinary table the centrally-v disposed movable portion is fiush with the sta- 15 tionary part of the table top and the supporting member and trays are housed in the base. Simple means are provided for raising the centrallydisposed movable portion and the trays and in this position it serves as an ideal cellaret.
20 Obviously other uses than that of a cellaret will be apparent. For instance, if it is desired to serve tea and light refreshments the movable top and trays may be utilized for carrying the tea pot and refreshments and after the repast is fin- 5 ished the dishes and remains may all be placed on the trays and lowered out of sight until a more convenient time arrives to take care of them.
Further objects and advantages will become apparent as the specification proceeds. Referring to the drawings forming a part thereof and in which one embodiment of the invention is illustrated:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view illustrating the parts in the position they would occupy with the table 35 being ordinarily used;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the centrally-disposed movable portion and the trays in their raised or elevated position;
Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section; and
40 Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3, looking in the direction i of the arrows.
Referring again to the drawings the reference numeral 5 designates the table top proper and 6 45 the centrally disposed movable portion. As illustrated in Fig. 1 when the table is being ordinarily used the centrally disposed movable portion 6 is flush with the table top proper 5.
The centrally disposed movable portion is car- 50 ried by a supporting member 1. The lower part of this supporting member 7 is suitably mounted in a tray 8. The supporting member carries one or more trays 9 intermediate the tray 8 and the movable top 6.
l 55 The table is provided with a hollow base 10 which houses the supporting member 1 and trays 8 and 9 when they are in their lowered position. Simple means are provided for raising and lowering the movable top and the trays. As 11- lustrated the table top proper has a depending 5 skirt H which extends downwardly into the base II]. This skirt has a plurality of longitudinally extending guide slots or openings l2. Guides l3 suitably secured to the under side of the tray 8 extend through the slots l2 and carry at their 10 outer ends rollers M which engage a spiral pathway I5 formed on the inner side of the cylindrical wall of the base In or if preferred in a liner l6 for said base. Anti-friction means indicated at l8 may be interposed between the table top 6 and 15 the base Hi.
When it is desired to raise or elevate the centrally disposed movable portion and the trays the table top proper 5 is rotated. The rollers l4 naturally follow the spiral groove l5 and the guides I3 operating in the slots 12 will cause the movable top, its supporting member and trays to be raised or lowered depending upon the direction of rotation of the table top proper. Other means for raising or lowering the parts may be utilized.
As illustrated in Fig. 2 the trays 8 and 9 form ideal receptacles for bottles, glasses or other refreshments and the trays and their contents may readily and quickly be moved out of sight into the base Ill.
Changes in details of construction and arrangements of parts may be made by one skilled in the art and all such changes are to be considered as coming within the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A table having in combination, a top, a centrally disposed movable portion in said top, a plurality of trays beneath and spaced away from said centrally disposed movable portion and arranged 40 in substantially parallel relation thereto, a member supporting said trays and the centrally disposed movable portion, a base, said base being adapted to house said trays and said supporting member, and means whereby the portion of the table top surrounding said centrally disposed movable portion may be rotated so as to raise or lower said centrally disposed movable portion and said trays.
2. A table having in combination a table top proper, a centrally disposed portion vertically movable in relation to said table top proper, a plurality of trays carried by said centrally disposed portion, a base, and means whereby rotary movement of said table top proper will cause said centrally disposed portion and the trays to be raised or lowered.
3. A table top having in combination a table top proper, a centrally disposed vertically movable portion, a plurality of trays beneath and spaced away from said centrally disposed portion and. arranged in substantially parallel relation thereto, a member supporting said trays and said centrally disposed portion, a base, said base being adapted to house said trays and said supporting member, a skirt depending from said table top proper and extending into said base, and means in conjunction with said skirt whereby when said table top proper is rotated said centrally disposed portion and said trays will be raised or lowered.
4. A table top having in combination a table top proper, a centrally disposed vertically movable portion, a plurality of trays beneath and spaced away from said centrally disposed portion and arranged in substantially parallel relation thereto, a member supporting said trays and said centrally disposed portion, a base, said base being adapted to house said trays and said supporting member, a skirt depending from said table top proper and extending into said base, longitudinal guide openings in said skirt, guides secured to the lowermost tray cooperating with said guide openings, rollers carried at the ends of said guides, and a spiral pathway in said base, said rollers engaging said pathway, the arrangement being such that when the table top proper is rotated, said centrally disposed portion and said trays will be raised or lowered.
