Description
H. s. LUBBEN TRUING DEVICE FOR` FRUIT JAR COVERS Filed May 29, 1935 Il r May 4, 1937.
Patented May 4, 1937 Parar fr oFFlcE 1 Claim.
vlll/ly invention relates toa device for correctly reshaping and'truing fruit jar covers.
Anl object of my invention is' to provide suchl a'A device which will accurately and positively reshape the lower flange of a jar cover" sothat it will seat accurately upon the rubber gasket.
A further object of my invention is toprovide such a device whichwill cause a positive, accurate centering thereon so that the truing operation le will be accurate within very close clearances.
A further object of my invention is to provide means for truing the threads of the jar cover in connection` therewith.
A further object of my invention is to provide l5 means for causing pressure to be applied directly against the flange and to retain the jar cover in locked position during this operation. l
A further object of my invention is to provid the above mentioned means in a construction of great simplicity which can be manufactured at a very reasonable cost.
With these and otherI objects in View, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of my g5 device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set. forth, pointed out in my claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a plan View of the device, 30 Figure 2 is a sectional view taken generally medially thereof, and
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail of apart thereof. In using jar covers, the lower seating flange of the jar covers usually always become bent or dis- ?.5 torted to a certain extent due to unequal pressures being exerted or by being damaged during the normal handling of the same. As a result when such a cover is used against its gasket, the jar will not be sealed properly due to the unequal 4Q pressure, and there will be a tendency for the rubber gasket to be squeezed at the particular location of the raised portion of the flange. It is, therefore, necessary to provide a truing device which will reshape this ange so that when 45 the jar cover is screwed on against the rubber gasket, the pressure will grip the gasket practically simultaneously so that this effect will not occur.
Furthermore, since the jar cover rim is very 50 small in breadth, it is necessary to provide accurate centering means so that the flange will be gripped positively at all points.
The base member is indicated generally by the character I0, and includes the raised boss I I hav- 55 ing the cylindrical cavity I2. The boss II is also cylindrical, and includes the accurately formed sides I3. Merging with the sides I3, is the 'beveled portionV Ill which terminates in the portion I5 which includesmale threads I6 adapted to conform closely to the threads in a standard fruit jar cover. It will be understood that the base member IU canrbe formed integrally' as shown or in any other suitable Way, although the preferred form, as shown, shows the form having the integral features of a single casting, preferably made of aluminium or other metal. The base can also be hollow as shown and having the side Walls I'I which act as ribs for the structure to strengthen the same.
The usual jar cover I8 which includes the porcelain or glass insert I9 is screwed down tightly on the threads I6 so that the small flange 20 of the jar cover will rest against the beveled shoulder I4. The top member 2| is then placed downwardly over the jar cover. This member includes the cylindrical handle 22, the strength- -ening ribs 23, the lower annular member 24,
which merges with the beveled portion 25, the beveled portion 25 to be exactly parallel with the further beveled shoulders I d of the base member. The member 24 terminates in the lower ring portion 26, which is closely machined to fit the sides I3 with an extremely small clear-` ance therebetween. Figure 3 shows an` enlarged detail of this portion` of the device, showing the small clearance, which feature is an important part of my invention.
In reshaping the flange 2l] of the jar cover I8, the device 2l, as stated, is placed over the cover and the handle 22 is firmly grasped with the hand, and a firm and positive pressure is applied downwardly against the base member, at the same time rotating the upper member 2I Since by virtue of the ring shaped member 26 the de.- vice will be very closely centered, the small flange 2U will be accurately reshaped, and all the indentations or raised portions will be merged into a uniform level surface. If the centering means were not provided this function could not occur due to the errors involved.
The member 24 includes the cylindrical walls 2'I which are of practically the same diameter as the threads in the jar cover. The reason for this is that when the upper piece is forced downwardly this portion will tend to straighten out threads which may have also become distorted through use, so that as a result the entire jar cover is reshaped accurately. 'Ihe positive, downwardly, and rotational pressure exerted by means of the upper piece against the lower piece results in a positive truing device which reshapes the flange and the jar cover so that it will seat perfectly against the usual rubber gasket.
It will be observed further that the jar cover 5 by being screwed by the threads to the lower member is held rigidly and can not be turned since the rotational pressure is exerted in the direction of the threads. The harder the upper piece is turned, the more positive will become the locking of the jar cover. This is necessary to secure a relative movement between the pieces in order to eiect the best truing results.
It will now be seen that I have provided a truing device for jar covers which Will positively and exactly reshape the lower flange of a jar cover, which will provide accurate centering means for the same during this operation, which reshapes the entire jar cover ready for use, and which allows a convenient application of pressure directly above the work to be done.
It Will be seen further that I have provided all the above mentioned means in a structure of great simplicity which can be manufactured at a very reasonable cost.
Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts of my invention without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention, and it is my intention to cover by my claim any modied forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents, which may be reasonably included within their scope. 5
I claim as my invention:
A fruit jar cover truing device comprising a cylindrical base member including a beveled shoulder extending from said base member, continuation of said shoulder including threads 10 adapted to be received within the threads of a fruit jar cover and to cause the fruit jar ange to be seated upon said beveled shoulder, an upper rotatable member having a further beveled shoulder adapted to firmly compress said fruit 15 jarflange against the said base member shoulder, and said upper member including an annular ring extension directly adjacent said second mentioned beveled shoulder, the extension being adapted to closely receive the periphery 20 bounding said base member shoulder to provide accurate centering means thereon, and said upper member including a Apair of upstanding ribbed iianges, a cylindrical handle attached between the flanges. 25
