Description
, April 1937- F. E. FOLLETT 2,078,890,
DENTKL FOUNTAIN Filed July 8, 1935 15 w flank 23522622 Patented Apr. 27, 1937 'i' 0F HQE 2,078,890 DENTAL FOUNTAIN Frank E. ,Follett, La Fayette, Ind. v Application July 8, 1935, Serial No. 30,321
Heretofore dental fountains have been mounted on a standard extending down to the floonand the cuspidor projects outwardly from the dental chair by means of an arm or a bracket. The aforesaid arrangement requiring a floor standard is cumbersome since the standard is so often in the way of one using the cuspidor. 'My invention has for its object a drinking fountain which will dispense with the floor standard which will be rotatable so as to .move it out of the way and which is vertically adjustable, depending upon the height of the person using the dental chair, and which also utilizes the waste water from the drinking cuspidor clean. The foregoing and other objects and advantages will be readily apparent from the following drawing and detailed description. The drawing represents the preferred form of my invention, and it will be described in 'con-' nection therewith, but it will be understood that tures herein I am by no means limiting myself to the precise construction shown and described, but that my invention extends to equivalent constructions which may vary widely in details from the strucdisclosed, provided that they come within the scope'of'the claims forming part of the specification.
Fig. 1 represents a perspective view of my drinking fountain in attached or operative position.
Fig. 2 represents an enlarged elevational view of my drinking fountain apparatus disconnected from the dental chair.
Fig. 3 represents a plan view of the bracket or arm connecting my drinking fountain apparatus with the base of the cuspidor, taken on the lines 3-3 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows.
The same reference characters are given to corresponding parts in the several views shown in the drawing, in which I is the water in-take pipe leading from the source of water supply to the connection of said pipe 2 with the flexible metal tubing 3, which flexible metal tubing conmeets with the rigid metal pipe 4 which extends upwardly into the drinking fountain 5 and more particularly into the discharge cup 6. The water thus flows up through the pipe I, 3 and 4 and flows upward in the cup 6, the overflow of which spills over into the inside 1 of the fountain. 8, and thereupon flows out through the flexible pipe fountain to keep the,
7 said opening being of 9, which pipe 9 is connected with an opening in the drinking fountain 5 through the hole surrounded by the connecting nut 8. ll! represents the curved lower part of the metallic hook at. the end of pipe 9. H is that point of the said metallic hook bent upon itself for the purpose of hanging the same on the edge of the cuspidor l3; and I2 is the discharge opening of said metallic discharge hook. M is the discharge pipe of the cuspidor l3. I5 is the usual and customary valve for flushing the cuspidor; IS the drinking fountain valve; and I1 thevalve for the usual saliva ejector. I8 is the metallic arm broken away for attaching the cuspidor to the dental chair. I9 is the rounded bracket for frictional contact with the cuspidor ii! for the purpose of holding the same in rigid connection with the dental chair. 20 is the screw for the pivotal connection between l9 and the bracket arm El. 22 is the opening in said bracket arm, the .size to permit the rigid metal pipe t to pass through said opening. 23 is the set-screw for adjusting. the height of said fountain 5. 24 is the screw for making tight frictional contact between I9 and the base of the cuspidor. 25 are the plurality of set-screws for making frictional contact at 26 with the base of the cuspidor.
It will readily be seen that the height of the drinking fountain 5 can be vertically adjusted by loosening the set-screw 23 and sliding the rigid metal pipe 4 through the opening 22 until the desired height of the fountain is acquired. When the fountain is used with children or people of small stature, the fountain naturally will be lowered, and with a tall person the fountain will correspondingly be raised. Similarly the arm 2!! can be projected at various angles as desired by loosening the set-screw 23 and turning the arm 2! on its axis at 22. Furthermore, the cuspidor can be readily changed without the necessity of tightening or loosening the 1 set-screw by swinging the same on the pivot 20.
The pipes 3 and 4 and the pipe 9 preferably has within the metal enclosure a rubber tubing so as to prevent contact of the water with the metallic surface of the pipe walls. The flexible metal tubing 3 and 9 permit these tubes to be moved and adjusted as the requirements of the patient require.
It will be noted that by means of my inven tion the undesirable standard extending from the floor is dispensed with, and also all the waste water spilling over and from the fountain 5 is drained through the cuspidor I3 and thus tending to keep the cuspidor clean at all times.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a dental chair having a cuspidor projecting therefrom, of a drinking fountain adapted to be detachably mounted on and wholly supported by said cuspidor and means for draining waste water from said fountain into said cuspidor.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a dental chair having a cuspidor projecting therefrom, of an adjustable drinking fountain adapted to be detachably mounted on and wholly supported by an arm extending from said cuspidor and means for draining the waste water from said fountain into said cuspidor.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a dental chair having a cuspidor projecting therefrom, of a drinking fountain adapted to be detachably and hingedly mounted on and wholly supported by said cuspidor and means for draining the waste water from said fountain into said cuspidor.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a dental chair having a cuspidor projecting therefrom with a drinking fountain vertically adjustable With relation to said cuspidor and also horizontally adjustable and carried by said cuspidor, and means for connecting said drinking fountain to a water supply pipe, and means for draining the waste water from said fountain into said cuspidor.
5. A dental drinking fountain comprising a flexible tube for connection with a water supply pipe, an aperture or opening to make the drinking water accessible for drinking purposes, a container for catching excess or waste water adjacent to said aperture or opening, a tube to drain off said water, means for vertically adjusting said drinking fountain and securing the same in a rigid position, and means for wholly supporting and swingingly and detachably mounting said drinking fountain on a dental cuspidor.
6. A dental drinking fountain comprising a drinking fountain proper, a reservoir surrounding the same, an opening in the latter for draining the waste water, a tube extending from said opening, said tube having the top part thereof of rigid metal and the bottom part thereof of flexible metal, a hollow pipe supporting said drinking fountain proper and a swinging arm adapted to hold said pipe and a swinging arm or bracket adapted to detachably mount said drinking fountain on a cuspidor of a dental chair.
'7. In a device of the character described, a dental cuspidor mounted on a bracket extendin from a dental chair, a horizontal swinging arm attached to the bottom of said cuspidor, and a drinking fountain detachably mounted on said swinging arm, and vertically adjustable with relation to said cuspidor.
8. A dental cuspidor mounted on a bracket extending from a dental chair, a second bracket extending from said cuspidor, said brackets nowhere being contiguous and being in separate vertical planes, and a drinking fountain mounted on said second bracket.
9. In a device of the character described, the combination with a dental chair having a cuspidor projecting therefrom, of a drinking fountain adapted to be carried by said cuspidor, the said drinking fountain being vertically adjustable with reference to said cuspidor, and independent of vertical adjustability also being horizontally adjustable with reference to said cuspidor.
10. In a device of the character described, a drinking fountain comprising a dispensing pipe and a reservoir surrounding the same, an arm having an opening at one end thereof for slidable cooperation with said dispensing pipe, a clamp adapted to be rigidly and removably attached to a dental cuspidor, said clamp having an opening adapted for hinged cooperation with the other end of said arm.
