Filed Dec. 19, 1932 INVENTOR. ALBERT P. HERRLINGER.
ATTORNEY.
Patented Apr. 27, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COLLAR SUPPORT a corporation of Ohio Application December 19, 1932. Serial No. 647,856
1 Claim.
My invention relates to a new and improved collar support and more particularly to a support to be used in conjunction with shirts having attached collars, for the purpose of supporting the attached collar after the shirt has been laundered to prevent crushing of the collar when a plurality of shirts are bundled together.
The object of my invention is to provide a collar support having a body portion and a head portion connected together by means of a neck whereby the support can be folded for insertion of the head tabs under the wings of the collar and the body portion placed inside the collar band. A further object of my invention is to provide the body portion with extending edges which protrude above the edge of the collar when the support is positioned in the collar to protect the upper edges of the collar and prevent other objects from rubbing on the collar band which might tend to soil the band. A further object is to provide the ends of the head portion of the collar support with cutaway portions to present a pointed end to the head member whereby said ends will more securely grip the collar for holding the collar support in place. A further object is to provide cutaway portions in the body portion adjacent to the neck to provide a weakened portion in the neck whereby said neck will bend along a line parallel to the base of said cutaway 3 portions for presenting upwardly extending edges on the body portion when the support is folded.
My invention will be further readily under" stood from the following description and claim and from the drawing, in which latter:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view looking at the front of a shirt and showing my improved collar support in position,
Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same taken in the plane of the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and
Fgg. 3 is a plan view of my improved collar suppor It is customary for laundries after they have laundered shirts provided with attached collars to place in such collar a support to prevent crushing of the collar when a plurality of shirts and other articles are bundled together for delivery to the customer.
I have devised a new and improved collar support which not only supports the collar but also protects the upper edge of the collar and is very easily inserted in the collar. This improved collar support consists of a sheet of material having sufficient flexibility to permit longitudinal flexing and comprises a body portion ll provided with an arcuate edge 12 whereby the support, when 5 positioned in a collar of a shirt, the edge I2 will rest on the back of the shirt. A head I3 is connected to the body portion by means of a neck M which extends into the body portion and has cutaway portions or incisions IS in the body por- 10 tion adjacent to the neck. The head and body portion are separated by arcuate incisions l6 extending from the cutaway portions I5 to the outer ends of the respective head and body portions. The ends I! of the head portion are out back as 15 at l8 to the incision IE to present points H3 at the respective ends of the head portions for engaging the flaps of the collar 20 of the shirt 2|.
When the collar sup-port is positioned in the collar of a shirt the body portion I l is placed within the inner face of the collar 20 and the head I 3 is bent forward causing the neck to fold along a line adjacent the base of the incisions l5 within the body ll, for presenting upstanding edges 22 to the body portion which will project above the upper edge 23 of the collar 20 for protecting the upper edge of the collar. The head l3 being bent forward permits insertion of the respective ends I! under the collar flaps for locking the collar support in position and firmly supporting the 001- 30 lar and preventing crushing of the collar when other objects are placed thereabove. The neck portion M when bent forward assumes a position between the joining ends of the collar proper.
Having thus fully described my invention what 35 I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In combination with a shirt having a collar attached, a collar support comprising a fiat flexible body portion arranged within the inner face 4.0 of said collar, a head adapted to be received under the collar fiaps, said body portion being connected to said head and having central spaced apart incisions for forming a neck between said head and body portion, said neck folded along a line be- 45 tween the bases of said incisions within said body with the upper edge of said body portion projecting above said neck and head and the upper edge of said collar.
