SPRAY GUN Filed May 31, 1935 w 25 7/7 49/9 @850. n. g
Patented Apr. 20, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in spray guns, and more particularly to a spray gun adapted to utilize the air pressure from a spare tire, hand pump or the like.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a spray gun having a removable mixing head and feed pipe. Another object of the invention is to provide a spray gun having a compressed fiuid chamber. Another object is to provide means for locking the mixing head in fixed position.
With these and other objects in view the invention will be better understood by reference to the accompanying specification and drawing wherein like references indicate corresponding parts and wherein:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of my improved spray gun with parts broken away and shown in section. V
Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the device in sealed arrangement with parts in section and the mixing device removed.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail elevation of the mixing device and Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4--4 in Fig. 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, I indicates a closure which in the present instance is a screw cap. The closure I is provided with a perforation 2 at one side of the top 3 thereof, and is adapted to be attached to a container 4 having a screw top 5. Mounted on the top 5 of the container 4 adjacent the inner face of the top 3 is provided a perforable solid gasket 6 whereby to normally seal the container 4 and cut off communication to the perforation 2 from the container. The container 4 in the present instance is shown as a glass jar but may be constructed of any other suitable material.
Mounted on the upper face of the closure l whereby to enclose the perforation 2 is a chamber 1 having an inlet 8 at one side 9 thereof. Mounted on the side 9 is a valve I 0 having a longitudinal port II adapted to communicate with the inlet 8 and which extends to the outer end of sleeve I2. The valve Ill is further provided with a bearing I3 having a vertical opening I4 adapted to slidably receive a stem I5. The stem I5 is provided with a head I6 at the lower end thereof and a threaded upper end adapted to receive the sleeve portion of a button I'I. Mounted between the button I! and the bearing I3 is an expansion spring I8 adapted to urge the stem I5 and button I! upwardly. The stem [5 is provided with a transverse port I9 adapted to align with the port II) when the button I! is depressed a predetermined distance by the finger of an operator. Upon release of the button I1 the spring I8 acts to urge the stem I5 upwardly whereby to cut ofi communication between the port l0 and the port I9.
A flexible rubber hose 2!] is adapted to be at- 5 tached to the sleeve II and has attached to the free end thereof a nipple 2|. The nipple 2| is adapted to be attached to the usual valve 22 of an inflatable tire 23.
The chamber 1 is provided with an outlet 24 on the wall 25 opposite the wall 9. The outlet 24 is provided with a thread 26. Formed in the outer end of the outlet 25 is a conical opening 21. A curved feed pipe 29 is adapted to be inserted through the outlet 24 and the perforation 2 whereby further insertion thereof will cause the tube to pierce the gasket 6 and establish communication between the tube and the container 4. The feed pipe 29 is of suflicient length whereby when in operative position the lower end thereof will be arranged in close proximity to the bottom of the container 4.
The feed pipe 29 has attached thereto at the discharge end thereof a head 30. The head 30 is provided with a conical inner portion 3| adapted to rest in the conical opening 21. A reduced conical portion 32 is formed on the outer end of the head 30. A longitudinal passage 33 in the head 30 is adapted to communicate with the discharge end of the feed pipe 29. A nozzle 34 30 is adapted to be screwed on the outlet 24 and is provided with a perforation 35. The inner face 36 of the nozzle 34 is adapted to engage a shoulder 3! on the head 30 whereby to lock the head and feed pipe in operative position. The head 30 is further provided with longitudinal slots in the sides thereof whereby to establish communication between the chamber 1 and the nozzle 34.
When it is desired to provide a spray gun and 40 container of liquid as one unit prior to use, the container is filled with liquid and the closure mounted thereon With the solid gasket whereby to seal the container. The feed pipe and mixing head are not arranged in the device until the same is desired for use, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. In use the nozzle 34 is removed from the outlet. The feed pipe is inserted through the outlet and the opening 2. Further insertion of the feed pipe will act to puncture the gasket 6. The feed pipe is then moved inwardly until the conical portion 3| of the mixing head rests in the conical recess 21 as shown in Fig. 1. The nozzle 34 is then threaded on the outlet until the shoulder 36 engages the shoulder 31 whereby to lock the mixing head and feed pipe in operative position. The device is now ready for use. It will be noted that the opening 2 is sufficiently large to permit passage 5 of compressed fluid into the container therethrough when the feed pipe is in operative position.
Upon depression of the button I! a predetermined distance, communication to the chamber 1 is established from the valve of the tire through the ports l0 and IS. The compressed fluid will then pass into the container 4 whereby to force the liquid from the container through the feed pipe and the passage 33 into the nozzle 34. The compressed fluid will also pass through the slots 38 into the nozzle whereby to mix with the liquid and force the same through the perforation in the nozzle.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have V provided a simple and efiicient spray gun. It is to be understood that other means for supplying compressed fluid may be used than that as shown without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A device of the class described including in combination a container having a filling mouth in the top part thereof, a gasket overlying said mouth, a closure for said container secured thereto and overlying said gasket, means cooperating with the closure to define a compressed air chamber thereabove, a compressed air inlet for said chamber, an opening from said chamber through said means, the outer edge of said opening being formed with an annular seat thereabout, a spray head having a rear shoulder portion seating rearwardly against said annular seat and a forward shoulder portion, a spray nozzle surrounding said head provided with an inner annular shoulder bearing rearwardly against said forward shoulder portion and further provided with a rearwardly projecting skirt portion engaging said first mentioned means to secure said nozzle and head, a liquid feed pipe carried by said head and extending rearwardly from the passage in said head through said chamber, closure and gasket to the lower part of said container, a side portion of said head being cut away beneath said annular shoulder and seat so as to provide an outlet for compressed air from said chamber to the forward inner part of said nozzle.
2. A device of the class described including in combination a container having a filling mouth in the top part thereof, an imperforate frangible gasket overlying said mouth, a closure for said container secured thereto and overlying said gasket, a dome mounted on said closure and cooperating therewith to define .a compressed air chamber above said closure, a compressed air inlet for said chamber, an outlet nipple protruding from said dome, and a spray nozzle threaded on said nipple; said closure having a perforation therethrough beneath said dome so that, upon removal of said nozzle, a liquid feed tube may be inserted through said nipple, chamber, and perforation for puncturing said gasket and subsequently delivering liquid to said nozzle.
