Description

Patented Apr. .20, 1937 swAsn PLATE DEVXICE Francesco Cassani, Este, Italy;
Application April 1, 1936, SeriaP-NoQ 72,173
'In Italy April 4, 1935 3 Claims.
The principle of converting the rectilinear reciprocating motion of pistons into rotary motion and vice verse. by means of a swash plate device instead of the usual crank shaft is already known. 5 But the several proposals for the practical embodiment of a mechanism suitable for this conversion have not been successful because of structural difficulties inherent to these mechanisms.
The invention consists in a swash plate device for the conversion of the rectilinear reciprocating motion of pistons into rotary motion of a shaft comprising in combination a swash plate journalled on the shaft, means bearing on 5 the sides of the swash plate and connected with the shaft for transmitting the thrust of the piston as a torque to the shaft, and means for permitting thetsliding engagement between the swash plate and the piston, such means being applied to only one face of the swash plate.
. Other features of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing and specified in the claims.
The energy is transmitted between the swash plate and the pistons by means of tappets connected with the pistons by a Cardan joint or'a spherical joint. The swash plate is substantially at rest in the rotary sense during the operation of the mechanism, as the tappets contacting with the plate restrain the rotation by frictional force., I v The accompanying drawing-shows by way of example a form ofthedevice according to the invention, together with an alternative arrangement for the transmission between the swash plate and the pistons.
Fig. 1 is a section showing the bearing of the swash plate on the driven shaft,
Fig. 2 shows a form of tappet with a Cardan joint between the swash plate and the pistons.
As it is shown onFig. 1 the bearing byLwhich the'swash plate is mounted on the rotating shaft I consists chiefly of two flanges A and B having inclined surfaces for receiving the conical. hearing rollers II and I2 and of. an inner ring 6 with a peripherical seat for the bearing rollers 10 on which bear the bore of the swash plate l3, so that .the said-plate is inclinedin respeat to the shaft l according to the inclination of the a boring in the ring C-for the mounting on the shaft I. The ring C could also form a single piece with one or the flanges A or B. The swash 55 plate l3 guided by the conical rollers II and l2 and supported by the cylindricalrollers Hi, the concial rollers being so arranged as to take up'all the positive and negative thrusts, caused by the reciprocatlng motion of the pistons, where- I as the cylindrical rollers III are bearings for the 5 plate l3 and take up the radial thrusts during the motion of the pistons.
The connection between the swash plate l3 and the piston 4 may be carried out in many different ways, for instance according to the two'forms 10 illustrated in the Figs. 1 and 2. In the example shown in Fig. l the piston 4 is connected with the plate l3 by means of a connecting rod 3 connected with the piston 4 and with the spherical joint 2, 5 allowing free articulation of the tappets 15 g 2 forming part of the joint which bears against the swash plate Hi. This joint allows the complete articulation following the complicated motion of the swash plate l3. In the example shown on Fig. 2 the piston 4 is connected with 20 the swash plate l3 by means of a Cardan joint, which may be of any suitable kind.
The tappets 2 being obliged to work by trac-- tion in the negative phases of the piston stroke,
rings 6 and l are provided which form ac 25 shaped section with the swash plate l3, so allowing'to the tappet to move in the opening of the 0 toward the center or towards the periphery thereof without losing contact with the surface of the swash plate.
The foregoing arrangements which permit a sliding engagement between the swash plate and the piston are applied to only one side of the plate, which leaves the other side free so that difierent mechanisms may be driven thereby for. 35 instance auxiliary air compressors or the like.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the forms of execution shown in the accompanying drawing and described in this.
