1 Claim. (01. 74472) This invention relates to a device in the nature of a hand knob, adapted to be attached to the gear shifting lever as a supplementary means for actuating the acceleration of the carburetor.
When starting the motor the hand throttle is adjusted to maintain a regular feed of gas from the carburetor. The hand throttle and foot accelerator are usually interconnected with the carburetor; and while so connected they are both adapted to independent adjustment.
This device as a supplementary means for actuating the carburetor independently of the hand throttle or foot accelerator, is fitted on the end of the gear shifting lever as a hand knob, a natural and convenient location to facilitate making adjustments to the carburetor.
The object of the invention is to fit on the end of the gear shifting lever, a knob suitable as a hand grip, to connect with a wire cable passing down through the floor of the motor vehicle, and extending to and being connected with the carburetor. The knob is adapted to be turned in either direction to wind up or relax the cable and adjust the carburetor accordingly.
The knob is fitted over the end of the gear shifting lever, and is retained in place by a clamping member forming a part of the knob, with suflicient tension between the knob and the clamping member that the knob and tension on the cable will temporarily remain in any position to which it is adjusted, in either direction.

A, designates the gear shifting lever projecting upwardly from the floor of the motor vehicle, conveniently situated with the steering wheel against which the operator sits, and within easy and natural reach of the operator, and B, des- 50 ignates a hand knob adjustably secured on the end of the gear shifting lever.
Secured to and extending from the knob and down through the fioor of the motor vehicle, and forwardly to connect with the adjusting lever of 55 the carburetor C, is a Wire cable D, by which the carburetor may be adjusted by turning the knob in either direction.
By turning the knob in one direction the cable D, is wound up on a winding drum b, forming a combinational part of the knob, and is drawn taut, and by turning the knob in the opposite direction the cable unwinds and relaxes by which the carburetor is adjusted accordingly.
E, designates a, tubular sleeve, split lengthwise, and adapted to engage over the end of the gear shifting lever A.
Engaging around the sleeve E, is a clamping member F, having a split section formed in the shank and fitted with a set screw G, adapted to adjust the split section to firmly bind with the sleeve E, to firmly clamp the sleeve E with the end of the gear shifting lever and to prevent turning with the rotation of the knob portion B.
Formed in the upper portion of the clamping member F, is a circular seat 1, in which is seated the winding drum b, formed on the lower end of a hollow bored shank H, to which the hand knob B, is secured by fastening screws D The cable wire D, passes through an opening 01 formed through the side of the clamping member F, the inner end being secured in a channel 11 formed in the periphery of the drum by any suitable means, so that it will wind up or unwind when the drum is rotated with the turning of the knob B.
Formed in the upper part of the shank H, is a counter bore h contiguous with a bore h formed centrally through the shank. The sleeve E, snugly engages in the bore h with the head of the sleeve projecting into the counter bore. Formed around the upper portion of the head is an annular channel e in which is fitted a split ring washer e Encircling the end of the sleeve E, and interposed between the washer e and a shoulder n formed at the juncture of the counter bore h and the bore W, is a coil tension spring K, adapted to maintain a frictional tension between the drum portion of the knob and the seat formed in the clamping member to temporarily maintain the adjustment of the drum in either direction by the rotation of the knob.
Formed in the face of the seat f, in the clamping member F, is an annular groove f and screwed in the groove is a plug f as a stop. Projecting from the lower and adjacent face of the drum b, is a pin b adapted to ride in the annular groove f and engage against the plug f, by the rotation. of the knob, and limit the rotation of the knob, when being rotated to wind up the cable wire for making adjustment to the carburetor.
The stops may be set at different positions in the groove for setting the wind of the cable, to
5 regulate the degree of adjustment to the carburetor.
What We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
In a gear lever carburetor control, a hand knob 1 rotatably attached over the end of the said gear 15 tachably connected over the end of said gear lever, a cable wire extending through the side of said clamping member, said cable being attached to the periphery of said drum, the said cable extending from the said drum, the opposite end being connected with a carburetor therewith, a split sleeve fitted over the end of said gear lever, said split sleeve projecting up through the centre of said clamping member and winding drum, a tension spring encircling the upper end of said sleeve, said spring engaging against a shoulder formed interiorly with said drum, said spring adapted to maintain a frictionalcontact between the said drum and the said clamping member, a stop formed on the adjacent side face of said drum, and a stop formed in the upper face of said seat, said stops adapted to regulate the rotation of the said drum in said seat by the rotation of the said knob.
