This invention relates to lock construction and more particularly to lock construction for swinging doors.
()ne of the objects of this invention is to provide a simple, strong and inexpensive construction for holding and/or locking doors in closed position, more particularly doors of the heavier type or doors subjected to severe usage in practice, as, for example, those of trucks, delivery vehicles,
and the like. Another object is to provide a construction of the above-mentioned character which may be quickly and easily installed and, moreover, one which is readily adapted for and installed in connection with either a left-hand 5 door or a right-hand door. Another object is to provide a construction of the above-mentioned character which is capable of great ease of manipulation and capable also of quick and convenient adaptation to the varying requirements of practical use. Another object is to provide a construction of the above-mentioned character in which the locking of the door in closed position may be quickly and easily achieved without impairment of the strength and ruggedness of the construction. Another object is to provide a construction of the above-mentioned character which will be foolproof and dependably under the control, Where it is installed in a delivery truck, or the like, of the truck driver or operator.
Another object is to provide a construction of the above-mentioned character which is well adapted to meet the varying conditions of hard practical use, particularly such peculiar conditions as are met with in vehicle constructions. Other objects will be in part obvious or in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arangements of parts as will be exemplified in the structure to be hereinafter described and the scope of the application of which will be in-' dicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing in which is shown one ofvarious possible embodiments of my invention,

Referring now first to Figures 1 and 2, I have there shown fragmentarily a door H! and a wall H which, for purposes of illustration, may be considered to be part of the enclosure forming a truck body or like vehicle, illustratively a refrigerated vehicle, though it is to be understood that my invention is not limited to its application to vehicles. The door I0 and wall or door frame, ll may be of any desired construction or interfitting relation, illustratively they may be like that indicated in Figure 2, whereas in Figure 1 also, the door is shown in closed position. The wall I l, adjacent its line of junction with the closed door Ill, first has drilled or otherwise formed therethrough a hole 12 and secured to the outer face l I of the wall I I and over the hole I2 is a supporting member generally indicated at l3. Member l3 has an upstanding substantially cylindrical portion l3 terminating in a base plate l3 by which the part I3 may be secured, as by screws M, to the outer face of the-wall I I, the base plate portion It being provided with a hole l3 which may be made to register with the hole 12 in the wall II and which is adapted to form a bearing for rotatably supporting a shaft I5. The inner end of the shaft l5 which extends through the hole I2 in the wall II, is threaded as at l5, for a purpose later described in detail, and at its outer end it has rigidly secured thereto or even integrally formed therewith a locking arm l6 terminating in a handle ll, the parts |6--I| being of substantial length to give a good leverage for ease of manual actuation.
While hole l3 in the base portion l3 (Figure 2) forms an inner bearing for the shaft I5, I provide also an outer bearing for the latter adjacent the lock arm portion l6 thereof and this hearing is formed by a hole It in a member generally indicated at l8 and better shown in perspective in Figure 4. It will be seen to have a ring-like part I8 of a diameter substantially like the external diameter of the cylindrical portion I3=- of the support l3 and, at diametrically opposite points, it has two legs l8 and I8 extending in an axial direction and preferably of substantial extent, being, in cross-section preferably rectangular.
Legs l8 and W are fitted into and slidably received by external guiding grooves or slots l3 I6 is received where the door swings as the door In of Figures 1 and 2 swings, or to receive the lug Ifi where the mechanism is installed on a door that swings in reversed direction.
In either case, the hole Hi in the back wall 16* (Figure 3) finds itself juxtaposed to or alined with the recess 35 in the plate portion 35 of the frame 35 and in readiness to receive the bolt 25. Accordingly, the key plug 24 may now be actuated against the action of spring 29 to project the bolt 25 out of the hole lfi and into the recess 35. This may be achieved with the aid of a key, a slot for which is shown at 38 (Figure l) where the tumbler mechanism above-mentioned locks the key plug 24 in its outward position, or simply by manually pushing the plug 24 inwardly where it is desired that the key coact with the tumbler mechanism only for withdrawal of the bolt 25, all as described in the above-mentioned co-pending application. Thereby the lug lfi (Figure 3) or the lug 16 in the above-mentioned alternative installation, is held seated in the recess 35 and the lock arm I5 is held against being swung about the axis of the shaft l5 and away from the seat formed by the right- angled portions 15 and 35 of the frame 35. Subsequent insertion of the key in the key slot 38 in the key plug 24 coacts with the tumbler mechanism to permit the now compressed spring 29 to release its stored energy and to force the key plug 24 and hence the bolt 25 in outward direction, carrying the bolt 25 out of the recess 35 and freeing the lock arm l6 for manual swinging about the axis of shaft l 5, thereby to permit opening of the door Iii.
The upper front part of the plate portion 35 is provided with a recess t5 (Figure 1), the depth of which (Figure 3) is substantially the same as that of the bolt-receiving recess 35 but recess 35 is open not only at the front of the plate portion 35 but also at the upper-left hand side edge thereof, the latter open portion being, moreover, positioned in the path of arcuate movement of the bolt 25 about the axis of shaft l5.
Accordingly, particularly where the bolt 25 is projectable by simply manually pushing the key plug 24 inwardly, it is desired to prevent the locking of the door Hi, the bolt 25, while the lock arm I6 is still out of engagement with the frame 35, is projected into its locking position, so that the subsequent swinging of the lock arm l6 by the handle I! in clockwise direction, as viewed in Figure 1, brings the now projected bolt 25 into the open-sided recess 35*, bolt 25 and recess 35 now acting to stop further movement of the lock arm l6. Due to the shape of the curved or cammed face 35 and the substantial area of the rear face of the enlarged portion l6 of the lock arm it, however, a substantial and adequate camming coaction takes place prior to the abovementioned stop action of bolt 25 and recess 35 to tightly hold the door closed and to relieve the bolt 25 from assuming any direct strain in holding the door ll) closed. The weight of the parts l6 l1 coupled with the above-described frictional action achieved by the spring I 9 (Figure with these parts insures, furthermore, that the mechanism may be quickly and easily installed irrespective of the thickness of the wall or doorframe II and irrespective of the degree of offset between the front face Hl of the door and the front face ll of the part II, for asimple and quick manipulation of the lock nut 2| speedily brings about an appropriate and proper setting of the parts related to the main support I 3 with respect to the part 35 carried by the door Hi, all while insuring the dependable achievement of all of the above-described features of action and advantages.
Where the apparatus is employed on vehicles, the above-mentioned action of the spring 19, in achieving a frictional holding of the parts against undesired movement, is of particular advantage and utility in that the moving parts of the mechanism are dependably held against rattling and vibrating due to the vibration of the vehicle itself, and thus, furthermore, long life and dependable action, particularly of the relatively small and delicate tumbler mechanism and immediately coacting parts, are assured.
It will thus be seen that there has been provided in this invention a mechanism in which the objects above set forth, together with many thoroughly practical advantages, are successfully achieved. It will be seen that the construction is of a thoroughly practical character and is well adapted to meet the varying conditions of hard practical use.
As many possible embodiments may be made of the above invention and as many changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter here-' inbefore set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. I
I claim:
1. In construction of the character described, in combination, a supporting frame structure having means for securing it to a wall adjacent the junction of the'edge of the wall with the edge of a door and a member having means for securing it to the door adjacent said junction, a lock arm having a shaft, means for rotatably supporting said shaft comprising bearing means carried by an inner portion of said frame structure and a bearing member for an outer end portion ofsaid shaft, said bearing member having means telescopically relating it to said frame structure, and means for fixing the plane in which said lock arm swings relative to said member,
said last-mentioned means comprising spring means interposed between said bearing means and said bearing member and acting to force the latter and said lock arm outwardly of said frame structure and means for fixing the extent to which said spring forces said parts outwardly.
2. A construction as claimed in claim 1 in which the means telescopically relating said bearing member and said frame structure comprises opposed guideways on one of said parts and means on the other of said parts slidably received in said guideways.
3. A construction as claimed in claim 1 in which said bearing member is provided with stop means for limiting the swinging movement of said lock arm, said frame structure and said bearing member having coacting means for preventing said bearing member from rotating relative to said frame structure.
4. In construction of the character described, in combination, a supporting frame structure havingmeans for securing it' tot aiwall adjacent the junction of the edge ofthe wall with the edge' of a door and a member. having means forsecuri-ng it to the door adjacent said junction, a lock ann pivotally supported by said. frame structure to swing in. aplaneacross; the frontiof said member, said lock arm having a bolt projectable; rearwardly thereof and in a direction toward said member, and-said: member having ,two; recesses spaced along'the arc traversed by saidbolt assaid lock arm swings, the upper of said recesses? being open at a.- side thereof facing toward the path of movement of said bolt, when projected,.as the latter is swung toward said member, and the other of said recesses having opposed side walls whereby the bolt may enter it only when projected rearwardly relative to the lock arm.

In construction of the character described, in combination, a supporting frame structure having means for securing it to a wall adjacent the junction ofthe edge of the wall with the edge of a door and a member having means for securing it to the door adjacent said junction, a lock arm pivotally supported by said frame structure to swing in a plane across the front of said member, said lock arm having a bolt projectable rearwardly thereof and in a direction toward said member, and said member having two recesses spaced along the are described by'said'boltas the latter moves with said lock arm, one of said recesses being shaped to receive said bolt only after the lock arm has been swung over the recess and thereafter the bolt is projected rearwardly and the other of said recesses being shaped to receive the bolt after it has already been projected rearwardly of said lock arm and as it is moved with the latter.

In construction of the character described, in combination, a supporting frame structure 40 having means for securing it to a walladjacent the junction of the edge of the wall with the edge of a door and a member having means for securing it to the door adjacent said junction, a lock arm having a shaft extending through said sup- 45 porting frame structure and through said wall whereby'saidi locktarmfma'y' pivot about the axis ofsaidi shaft and be swung into or out of operative relationito said. member, said lock arm carrying a locking boltprojectable rearwardly there:- of' and movable toward" orzaway from saidmember'on the door, said member having a front face along and against which said lock. arm may be swung,said front face having a recess into which saidtbolt may'be. projected, and said member having anopen-sided recess spaced along the arc of movement described. by saidibolt' as said lock arm is swung toward. or away fromsthe position in which saidzbolt'may enter said first-mentioned recess, .andmeans for'settingsaid lock arm and its bolt relative respectively to said. front face and said recesseszand to therebyaccommodate the degree of; oifsetbetween-the: planes of" the wall and door.

In construction of the character described, in combination, 'a supporting frame structure havingmeansforsecuring it to a walladjacent therjunction of the edgeof the wall:with the edge of a' door and a member having means for securing it tothe: door adjacent saidjunction, a lock arm having-w shaft extending through said supportingframe structure and through said wall whereby said lock arm may pivot about the'axis of said shaft'and be swung into or out of operative relation:- to said member, saidmember' having a cam-shaped front face along which said lock arm, when swung, moves, said front face terminating in a substantially horizontal ledge hav ing arecess therein, said ledge acting to stopfthe swinging movement of said lock arm and said lock arm having aprojecting part adapted to enter SIGURD BRANTINGS 'ON.
