Description

April 13, 1937.
H. N. M LELLAN ET AL CHAIR Filed April 27, 1936 INVENTOR.
ATTORNEY.
Patented Apr. 13, 1937 PATENT OFFICE Hiram N. McLellan, Shaker Heights, Ohio, and
Y Gustav C. Balbach, Grand Rapids, Mich., as-
signors to The Taylor Chair Company, Bedford, Ohio, a corporation of Ohio Application April 27, 1936, Serial No. 76,502 4 Claims. c1.155 19s) This invention relates to a chair construction and has for its principal object to provide a construction wherein the chair seat and legs are joined in a simple manner making for greater rigidity and strength. A further object is to provide a leg bracing construction peculiarly adapted for attachment of a chair leg to a seat construction comprising a seat element having a skirting extending therearound and to provide at the same time a very effective joint for holding the right angularly extending portions of the skirting together and holding the leg in place.
Other .objects will be in part apparent and in part pointed out hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a chair embodying the new construction; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan section corresponding substantially to the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2; Fig. 6 is a diagrammatic, fragmentary section showing a different form of skirting attached to the chair seat.
In the drawing the numeral N) indicates generally a chair seat having attached thereto a back rest H of any suitable construction and supporting legs I2. The legs |2 may be braced below the chair seat in any conventional manher, as by rungs l3.
The chair seat l0 may conmprise an upper seat element M to which may be secured a suitable continuous skirting l5 as by screws l6 extending upwardly through the skirting into the chair seat element M. The skirting I5 is made up of a U-shaped portion I1, the legs of which make right angles with the front skirting portion l8.
In the angles between the portions I1 and I8 and having an interfitting rib connection with each thereof are blocks Hi. The interfitting rib connection comprises complementary rib formations in the skirting portions I1 and I8 and in the blocks l9 and 2| and intersect the skirting only to a slight extent, suitably about the depth of the rib grooves. They may intersect the skirting to a somewhat greater extent but it is desirable not to weaken the same very much. It is, however, highly desirable that the bores 22 should intersect the skirting to some extent so as to secure a firm bonding of the cylindrical projections 23 of the legs l2 not only to the blocks l9 and 2| but to the skirting as well. The legs I2 are provided with shoulders 24 surroundingthe projections 23 and abutting the lower surfaces of the skirting members I! and i8. Screws 25 may be inserted through the blocks i9 into the projections 23.
As will be clear from Fig. 4 the skirting i5 in the preferred form described above simply abuts the lower surface of the chair seat Id. In Fig. 6 we have shown a modified form wherein the skirting IE is provided with an upstanding flange I5 forming a socket for receiving the seat portion M From the foregoing, it will be obvious that we have provided a chair construction well adapted for its intended purposes and while we have shown and described the present preferred embodiment of our invention, we are aware that the same may be realized in varying structures and we therefore do not wish to be limited to the details of the disclosures but only in accordance with the appended claims and the prior art.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is:
'1. In a chair construction, a seat, a continuous skirting rigidly secured to the under side thereof and including side and front portions forming an angle with each other, a corner block in an angle between said skirting portions, there being an interfitting rib connection between said block and each of said portions, a
7 vertical bore intersecting said block and each of said portions and a leg having a projection received in said how and a shoulder surrounding said projection and engaging the bottom of said skirting.
2. In a chair construction, a seat, a continuous skirting rigidly secured to the under side thereof and including side and front portions forming an angle with each other, a corner block in an angle between said skirting portions, there being an interfitting rib connection between said block and said skirting, a vertical bore intersecting said block and each of said portions and a leg having a projection received in said bore and a shoulder surrounding said projection and engaging the bottom of the skirting.
3. In a chair construction, a seat, a continuous skirting rigidly secured to the under side thereof and including side and front portions forming an angle with each other, a corner block in an angle between said skirting portions, there being an interfitting rib connection between said block and each of said portions, a vertical bore intersecting said block and each of said portions and a leg having a projection received in said bore and a shoulder surrounding said projection and engaging the bottom of said skirting, said rib connection including alternating ribs and grooves of such depth that said block embraces 180 of said projection.
4. In a chair construction, a seat, a continuous skirting rigidly secured to the under side thereof and including side and front portions forming an angle with each other, a corner block in an angle between said skirting portions, there being an interfitting rib connection between said block and said skirting, a vertical bore intersecting said block, and a leg having a projection received in said bore and a shoulder surrounding said projection and engaging the bottom of the skirting.
