The chords l0 and II are connected by side stakes I2 which may be of any suitable form but which in this embodiment are illustrated. as being of angle iron connected at top and bottom to the upper and lower chords respectively, by rivets, bolts, welding, or any other suitable attaching means. For this form of the invention, the side sheets may be formed substantially in accordance with the showing in Figures 3 to 5 inclusive. From an inspection of Figure 5, it will be noted that the side sheet is formed from a fiat blank sheet of metal !3 which is cut out at the top and bottom substantially in the .manner shown. In this form the cutout I 4 provides a central tongue I5, inclined portions l6, extending from the tongue, other inclines II, which extend upwardly and merging with the vertical cuts l8, adjacent the top. At the bottom, a somewhat similar cutout 20 is provided which forms a central tongue 2|, inclined edges 22, other inclined edges 23 and the vertical edges 24, adjacent the bottom.
When the plate is so formed, it is bent along the central vertical lines 2424 and 2526 so as to form a central groove on the outside of the sheet for receiving the side stake. The sheet is also bent along lines 27 so as to bring the inclines l6 and I! together and also bent on lines 28 to bring the vertical edges l8 in engagement with the inside of the tongue I5. When so bent, the meeting edges are welded so as to hold the plate in its final shape. At the lower end the sheet is further bent along lines 3U3Ei and lines 3l3| and again Welded in the manner previously described so as to provide the final sheet in the form shown in Figures 2 to 4, inclusive.
With the sheet 50 finished, which is designated generally 35, it may be applied to a car wall construction as shown at the right hand side of Figure 1. This is applied during the assembling operation of the car Wall and is connected to the upper and lower chords respectively, by rivets, bolts, or other suitable means, 35. Thereafter the side stake i2 may be applied in the central groove and secured by means of rivets, bolts, or other suitable securing means 31, to the upper and lower chords respectively. The side stake is also connected by means of bolts, rivets, or other suitable fastening means 38, to the inner surface 40, of the side sheets.
The present invention also contemplates the form of side sheet shown at the left handside of Figure 1, designated generally 40. This sheet in all essential details, is like the sheet 35 except that the side stake groove is not positioned centrally thereof. It is apparent that the side stake groove may be placed at any point in the width of the side sheet asconvenience may dictate. In all events, however, the various side sheets constituting the completed wall are designed of sufficient width to bring their edges in abutment as shown at 42 so as to provide a complete panel between side stakes. These abutting edges are then welded or otherwise secured in any desirable manner.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Figures 6 to 8 inclusive, the bottom chord 50 of the car is disposed slightly outwardly from the position illustrated in the form of invention shown in Figure 1, In this case, the bottom of the side sheets extends downwardly and is not bent inwardly as is the case in Figure 1, but on the contrary, the stake receiving groove is deflected outwardly so as to bring the bottom end of the stake outwardly for attachment of the vertical flange of the lower chord 56. In this form of invention, the side sheet which is designated generally 52, is made of a blank 54 of the type shown in Figure 8. The upper end of this blank is substantially the same as the upper end of the blank illustrated in Figure 5 and the same is folded and welded in substantially the same manner. However, at the bottom, a central tongue is provided which is slightly longer than the blank which has diagonal edges 58 formed by cutouts, which extend in the opposite direction from those shown at the bottom of Figure 5.
The angular edges 58 terminate in vertical edges 59 which are adapted upon bending of the blank, to abut against the side edges of the tongue 56. This blank is bent at the top along lines Bii5il and 5l6l and also along the vertical lines 6262 and 53-63. When bent and welded, the top of this side sheet forms itself in a manner similar to the side sheet of Figure 2, but at the bottom the tongue 56 is bent forwardly along the lines 54 and thence downwardly along the lines 65 so as to bring the edges together for welding. Upon welding, the finished sheet is substantially as shown at 52 of Figure 6. Here again, the adjacent sheets are of suificient width to bring their edges in abutment as at 68 so as to enable them to be Welded together to form a completed side wall construction.
As distinguished from the prior art, the side stake receiving grooves are formed by cutting, bending and welding and thus the two-directional pressing operation is eliminated along with the attendant dangers thereof. Furthermore, the side sheets are of relatively large size which minimizes the necessary welding to complete the entire wall.
It is to be understood that the inventioncontemplates sheets of any desired size so that very large sheets may be provided of suflicient width to embrace one, two or more side stake grooves whereby the necessary welding at the abutting edges of adjacent side sheets is reduced to a minimum.
It will further be understood that this type of side sheet is applicable to various types of cars to provide increased capacities therefor while at the same time, protecting side stakes against corrosion and damage in use, due to the lading. The side sheets may be readily removed, and replaced or may be applied to old or new cars as desired.
I claim:
1. In a car wall construction having upper and lower chords and connecting side stakes, side sheets therefor adapted to be connected edge to edge to form a continuous wall, each sheet having between its ends, a car stake receiving groove, said sheets being adapted to be attached to the upper and lower chords and having their main portions and their corresponding edge to edge connections lying in an outward plane and receiving said car stake in said groove on the outside thereof with the base of said groove attached to the inner surface of said side stake.
2. A car wall construction of the character described, having upper and lower chord members and connecting side stakes, a plurality of side sheets therefor, each having a stake receiving groove disposed between its side edges, said sheets being connected to the upper and lower chord members with an associated side stake in said groove, adjacent, side sheets having their edges in abutting relationship and connected together, and the major portions thereof lying in the plane of the outer portion of said side sheets.
3. A car wall construction of the character described, having upper and lower chord members and connecting side stakes, a plurality of side sheets therefor, each having a stake receiving groove disposed between its side edges, said sheets being connected to the upper and lower chord members with an associated side stake in said groove, adjacent side sheets having their edges in abutting relationship and welded together, and the major portions thereof lying in the plane of the outer portion of said side sheets. I 4. A car wall construction of the character described comprising upper and lower chords and connecting side stakes, a continuous wall formed of side sheets which are connected at their tops to said upper chord, and then extend outwardly and downwardly for connection to said lower chord, said sheets having side stake receiving grooves intermediate their edges, and side stakes positioned in said grooves connected to their associated side sheets, and said side sheets being joined edge to edge intermediate said side stakes in the plane of the outer major portion of said side sheets.
5. A side sheet for a car wall construction having its main and bottom portions lying in an outward plane and its upper portion lying in an inward plane and having intermediate its side edges a stake receiving groove, said groove adjacent its bottom being inclined outwardly to merge with the bottom portion of saidside sheet. 6. A car wall construction of the character described, having upper and lower chord members and connecting side stakes, with the vertical flanges of each of said chord members lying in substantially the same plane, side sheets connected to the upper and lower chords and having their central portion disposed outwardly to provide a main panel lying in an outward plane, a stake receiving groove intermediate the edges of said side sheet with a side stake therein connected at its inner surface to the base of said groove, said side sheets being connected edge to panels of said sheets.
7. A car construction of the character described having upper and lower chord members and a connecting side stake, said lower chord having a vertical flangelying in a plane outwardly of the vertical flange of said upper chord, an associated side sheet connected to said upper chord at its upper end and deflected outwardly and extending downwardly throughout its main portion and connected at its lower end to said lower chord, a stake receiving groove intermediate the side edges of said side sheet, :zaid side sheet being connected at the base of said groove to the inner surface of said side stake, said side sheets being connected edge to edge with the major portion of the connections thereof lying in the plane of the outer main panels of said sheets.
8. A side sheet having its main portion lying in an outward plane and at least one of its marginal edges lying in an inward plane and having a stake receiving groove intermediate its ends, said side sheet being cut,bent and welded to provide said groove therein.
9. A side sheet for railway cars having intermediate'its side edges a single vertically extending groove adapted to receive a side stake, and having portions including the major portion of the side edges lying in a single outward plane on each side of said groove and an upper edge portion lying in an inner plane, said portions lying in an outward plane comprising the greater part of said sheet.
10. A car wall construction having upper and lower chords, side sheets therefor adapted to be connected to form a continuous Wall, each sheet having between its ends a car stake receiving groove, said sheets being adapted to be attached to the upper and lower chords and having their main portions and the abutting edges of said main portions lying in an outward plane, and stakes in said receiving grooves on the outside thereof.
