This invention relates to match booking machines, and particularly to cover and match carriers therefor of the type disclosed in United States Patent No. 1,042,472, dated October 29,

1912. The machine of such patent includes an endless chain of carrier links for the complementary cover and card elements to be assembled, each link comprising a base having flanged side walls which afford a pocket for the reception of the book elements, and having also exterior ears by means of which the adjoining links are hingedly connected. Within the pocket of each link is arranged a clamping member comprising a smooth spring leaf the forward end of which is secured to the adjacent edge of the base and the body of which leaf inclines upwardly to and against the flanges of the side walls. At one station the covers are inserted flatwise in the carrier links presented thereto, which covers are 2 clamped in the links by the free upper ends of the respective spring leaves; thence the covers are transported by the links to a succeeding station where conventional match cards having staggered matches and usually of less width than the covers are pushed flatwise into the respective links and are therein clamped by the spring leaves against the complementary covers; thence the associated covers and cards are transported to stitching and other instrumentalities which are included in the book making cycle. In the operation of the booking machine just referred to the match cards are frequently laterally-displaced to a greater or less extent in relation to their complementary covers not only during the insertion of such cards in the carrier links but also during their intermittent travel to the stitching station, thus impairing the uniformity of the product of the machine.

The object of my invention is to overcome in a simple and eflicient way the drawback mentioned, and to that end I provide the acting surface of the spring clamping leaf of each-link or holder with a series of ridges or protuberances which are adapted and arranged to enter the spaces between alternate matches of the opposing match card during the insertion of the card (or a plurality of associated cards) in the link or holder, which construction in its preferred form will be hereinafter described and the scope of the invention defined in the appended claims.

In the drawing- Figure 1 is a plan of several hingedly connected carrier links of a match booking machine, together with the pusher for inserting the match cards in each succeeding pair of links during the intermittent travel of the carrier; showing the covers as positioned in the links, two of which covers are broken away to expose the spring clamping elements respectively, and also showing match cards as disposed in the path of the 5 pusher preparatory to their insertion in the links.

Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section through one of the links, showing the complementary cover and cards clamped therein.

Fig. 3 is a horizontal section, directly above 10 the spring clamping element, as on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawing, A designates a succession of carrier links or holders into which into which links cards, gered matches are inserted and assembled with the covers at a succeeding station by means of a reciprocating bifurcated pusher, D. Backer members, E, serve as stops to limit the rearward 25 movement of the covers and cards when the cards are inserted in the links. As herein illustrated each link comprises a base l0, parallel side walls ll having overhanging top flanges I 2, and suit- Within each link is arranged in the space between the side walls II a spring clamping leaf l4 having at its forward end an angular lip [5 which is secured to the adjacent end of the base 35 It), the leaf being inclined upwardly and rearcurved downwardly, as at It, to present a smooth 40 bearing surface for the opposing card as it is being forced, during its entry into the link, between the spring leaf and the flanges by means of the pusher D, as described in the aforementioned Patent No. 1,042,472. Usually two coun- 45 terpart match cards, one superposed on the other and of less width than the cover, are inserted in each link or holder.

According to my invention I provide the upper or acting curved portion of the clamping leaf N 50 of each link or holder with a series of equally spaced rounded protuberances H which taper an extended distance forwardly, as at l8, and merges with the lower smooth surfaces of the leaf. Such protuberances,

which are efllciently formed by 55 corrugating the leaf throughout its width, are arranged and adapted to enter the spaces between alternate matches of the opposing match card during the insertion of the card (or cards) in the link against the resilient pressure of the leaf, as seen in Fig. 4, which protuberances thus severally co-act with the opposing matches and withthe longitudinal edges of the adjacent matches in a manner to effect and ensure the proper central and parallel disposition of the-card (or cards) in relation to the previously inserted cover, B, and to the longitudinal edges of the latter, and also to maintain the uniform relation of the associated card (or cards) and cover until they are presented to the action of a wire stitcher or other fastening means at another station of the machine.

By virtue of the described tapering of the protuberances the leaf presents throughout its length a smooth and unobstructed bearing surface for the leading end of the match card during its passage through the link.

It is to be understood that my invention is not limited to the exemplifying construction herein disclosed, as the same may be modified within the fair spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.

I claim- 1. A cover and match card carrier for match booking machines, comprising a plurality of holders each having a clamping leaf whereof the bearing surface is provided with a series of spaced protuberances which enter the spaces between and co-act with the longitudinal edges of the adjacent matches during the insertion of a match card in the holder.

2. A cover and 'match card carrier for match booking machines, comprising a plurality of holders each having a clamping leaf whereof the bearing surface is corrugated to provide a series of spaced protuberances which enter the spaces between and co-act with the longitudinal edges of the adjacent matches during the insertion of a match card in the holder.

3. A cover and match card carrier for match booking machines, comprising a plurality of holders each having a clamping leaf whereof the bearing surface is rounded and is corrugated to provide a series of spaced corrugations which taper an extended distance along the leaf and merge with the smooth surfaces thereof, said protuberances adapted and arranged to enter the spaces between and co-act with the longitudinal edges of the adjacent matches during the insertion of a match card in the holder.

4. A clamping element for the carrier link of a match booking machine, comprising a spring metal leaf having its acting portion rounded and corrugated to present a series of spaced protuberances which taper an extended distance alongthe leaf and merge with the smooth surfaces thereof.
