Description

April 6; 1937. A. SAMSTAG VANITY CASE CONSTRUCTION Filed July 10, 1936 m V N ATTORNEY.
Patented Apr. 6, 1937 UNITED STATES VANITY CASE CONSTRUCTION Louis 'A. Samstag, New York, N. Y.
Application July 10,
4 Claims.
The object of the present invention is to provide an ornamental case such as a vanity case or a case for holding any small articles such as cigarettes, characterized by a novel reinforcing of the sides of the base member, enabling the use of a special and simple type hinge, the ends of the base member being further reinforced by decorative end pieces which may serve to'conceal the ends of the hinge pin.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse section on the line 2-2, Figure 1, with the cover member slightly swung on its hinge toward open position.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section on the line 3-3, Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a view in side elevation of one of the ornamental end pieces.
Figure 5 -is a fragmentary plan view of the base member and cover member hinged together and partly broken away, on the line 55, Figure 6, and also longitudinally.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary side elevation of the structure shown in Figure 5.
Referring to the drawing, the base member is a simple tray-like formation A of a piece of sheet metal, the metal being turned over to form a front flange l and a rear flange 2, which lie horizontally when the tray is resting on a plane surface. At each side of the tray a relatively shallow flange 3 is provided. Inasmuch as the tray does not directly support the cover member and has little strain imposed thereon, it may be of relatively light sheet stock.
At each side of the tray and applied to an appropriate flange 3, is a relatively heavy strainresisting plate 4 which, in the present embodil0 ment, is oval in shape.
Each plate 4 is riveted to its adjacent flange 3 by means of a sleeve rivet 5 which, being hollow, is adapted to permit the passage of a rivet pin carried by decorative end member 6 later to be described.
Referring to Figure 3, it will be seen that at one end each strain-resisting plate 4 is formed with a slot at l, forming a hinge seat for the hinge pin of the cover member B.
The cover member B comprises a piece of sheet metal curled at one end around a hinge pin or wire 8. At its sides, the cover member is formed with flanges 9 and at its front end the cover member may be flanged inwardly at l0 and over a frame plate II which may hold a mirror I2.
1936, SerialNo. 89,945
When the cover member is in closed position, its position, it side flanges 9 lie Within the strainresisting plates 4. The hinge pin or wire 8 carried by the cover member is bent at right angles at each end, the bent ends being fitted within the slots 1 of the strain-resisting plates 4, as shown in Figures 5 and 6.
The method of assembly is very simple. The hinge pin or wire may be placed in position and its ends bent angularly. Then one bent end may be inserted in the slot I of one of the plates l, after which the plates may be slightly sprung apart and the other bent end of the hinge pin or wire snapped in position Within its appropriate slot of the second strain-resisting plate, which completes the assembly.
It has been noted above that sleeve rivets are employed for attaching the strain-resisting plates 4 to the flanges 3 of the base member. The decorative end pieces 6 have molded therewith or driven in suitable apertures therein, rivet pins 63:. When each end piece is placed in the position shown in Figure 1, pins 6.1: will pass through the sleeve rivets and may be headed on the inner faces thereof, as shown in Figure 3. These end pieces will cover and conceal the slots 1 and bent hinge pin ends and will further reinforce the base member.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
1. In a device of the character described, a base member comprising a piece of sheet metal flanged longitudinally at its front and rear margins and having a flangeat each side margin, forming a tray, a strain-resisting plate riveted to each side flange of the tray, each strain-resisting plate being formed with a slot at one end thereof, a cover member having one end thereof curled to form a hinge sleeve, a hinge pin in said sleeve and angularly bent at each end, the bent ends of said pin being seated in the slots of the said strain-resisting plates, and a decora- K 10 base member comprising a piece of sheet metal flanged longitudinally :at its front and rear margins and having side flange members, the whole forming atray, each side flange member of the tray being formed with a slot at one end thereof,
5 a cover member, a hinge pin carried by the cover member, the pin being angularly bent at each end, the bent ends of said pin being seated 'in'the slots of said tray flange members, and a decorative end piece applied to the exterior of each of said flange members, concealing the hinge pin.
4. In a device of the character described, a base member comprising a piece of sheet metal flanged longitudinally at its front and rear margins and having a flange at each side margin forming a. tray, a strain-resisting plate riveted to each side flange of the tray exteriorly thereof, a cover member having one end thereof curled to form a hinge sleeve, a hinge pin in said sleeve, the ends of said pin being seated in the slots of said strain- ;resisting plates, and said plates forming side boundary members for the cover when the latter is moved to closed position abutting the longitudinal flanges of the tray.
