Description

' A. WALES.
Corn -Planter. No. 20,749. Patented June 29, 1858.
N-PETERS, Pflm'uumosmmik. WAS NNNNNNNNN c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. WVALES, OF PONTIAC, ILLINOIS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 20,749, dated June 29, 1858.
To all whom it may concern- Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS WALES, of Pontiac, in the county'of Livingston and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seed-Planters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of the several parts, the peculiarities of which will be described.
In order that those skilled in the art may use and manufacture my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the annexed drawing, which-is a perspec- Live view of my machine, A represents the frame of the machine. 0 is a cross-piece in the frame, on which are erected the uprights B B. F is the driving-wheel of the machine. This wheel is provided with two cranks, g, one on each side, and to which are secured the pitmen It These pitmen connect with a lever, 6, i being an extension of said lever, D being a roller which has its hearings in the uprights B B, through which the levers pass, said roller D acting as a fulcrum on which the le- "ers i turn. Lever t" connects with a gate, E, c 0 being a portion of said gate which passes down into the seed-hoppers, theirlowerextremities being so constructed as to act as slides for discharging seed.
As will be seen, there are two pitmen, two cranks, two levers, two rollers D D, two gates E E, and four or more slides connected with and making a part of said gates. As one gate is going up the other is going down, both dischargingseed as their slides pass down through the several seed-hoppers.
Difierent kinds of grain may be placed in the several hoppers and planted at the same time as circumstances may require. I contemplate using this machine, however, for the purpose more particularly of planting corn and pumpkins.
There is a screw at the end of each of the slides used in the corn-hoppers, so that if the slides drop too much corn the turning of the screw will move the block backward or forward, so as to close or open the aperture through which the corn passes, according as circumstances may require.
If the machine plants too deep, I use braces d d, fastened to rollers d, to raise or lower, as may be required.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the two cranks g to the wheel f, the pitmen I1. h, the levers Hi i, and rollers D D, with the gates E E, provided with slides a c c, all being constructed and operated in the manner herein set forth, and for the purpose described.
AUGUSTUS WALES.
