This invention relates to boilers and the object of the invention is to provide a boiler adapted for domestic heating lpurposes.
Al further object of the invention is to provide a boiler whereby an oil burner may be used in conjunction therewith.
A further objectrof the invention is to provide a boiler having improved means for the circulation of water therethrough, and also for the circulation of the products of combustion to insure a thorough heating of the water.v
The invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the boiler embodying the features of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a View similar to Figure 1 but with a lower panel removed.

Referring to the drawings by reference numerals it will be seen that the boiler comprises a casing 5-including a top 6, a rear wall or panel 'l which terminates short of the bottom\,of the boiler, side panels 8 which also terminate short of the bottom of the boiler and lower side panels 9. Suitably supported at the lower edges of the panels 'l and 8 is a short bottom panel section I0 which merges into a vertical partition panel I I disposed inspaced parallel relation to the panel 8. and the removable side panels 9 a burner compartment I2 opening at the rear of the boiler and- L adapted to accommodate a conventional oil burner I3 as shown in Figure 2. At the open front side of the chamber I2 the panel I0 is braced by 5 suitable standards Ila as shown.
The interior of the casing thus constructed is lined as clearly shown in Figure 3 with asbestos pr otherinsulating material I4.
Arranged in the casing above the compartment or chamber I2 is a plurality of .hollow rectangu- 5 lar shaped sections I5, each section having spaced hollow baiiies I6 connecting opposite sides thereof, the baflies I6 in the present instance being substantially diamond shaped in cross section.
The sections I5 are arranged between .a front 10 section I1 `of substantially the same dimensions as the sections I5, and a section I8 which has a baiile'equipped portion substantially identical in construction with the sections I5 and II1 but which also has integral therewith a hollow shell 15 portion which ts conformably in the front portion of the casing 5 and includes inner walls I9 and outer walls 20 spaced from the inner wall I9, the lowerportions of which walls extend downwardly between the lower portion of the panel 8 20 and partition panel II. All of the sections I5, and section IB are so arranged, and as shown, relative to one another as to have the baiiies of one section staggered with respect to the bailles of the next adjacent section. 25,v
Each of the sections is preferably made of cast iron substantially in the form of parallelopipeds which are assembled to provide a chamber for heating the water within the hollows 2| of the sides of the sections I5, the hollow 26 of section 30 I'l, and also within the hollow 22 formed by the wall portions I9 and 20 of the section I8; as well as for heating the water within the hollow 23 of the tubular bales I6 with which each of the sections I5 and section I8 is provided as shown. 35
Further each of the sections is suitably provided as shown in Figure 8 with openings 24 arranged at diagonally disposed corners thereof and providing for the entrance and eXit of water from each of the sections. When the sections 40 are assembled the openings 24 aline, as is thought apparent, and as shown in Figure 8 have tted therein the ends of coupling tubes 25 for a c irculation of water through the assembled sections. The end section I1 is provided at the top there- 45 of with an outlet 21. coupled in any suitable manner withthe feed pipe '28 which leads from the boiler to the radiators (not shown).
'I'he section I1 as shown is also provided with a suitable cleanout opening 29 therethrough, and 50 with a ue opening 30 adapted to be coupled in. the usual manner with the stack 3 I 1 For the opening 29 the panel 1 is provided with a suitable door 32. 5 'I'he outer wall 20 of combustion chamber 40 formed integral with member I 8 adjacent the bottom thereof is provided with a'suitable inlet 33 adapted to vbe connected with the return side 34 of the water circulating system and if desired. and as shown, an electric booster pump 35 may be inserted in the line between the return conduit 34 and the inlet 33. In the lower portion thereof the combustion chamber 40 has extending through the walls thereof an inlet opening 36 that accommodates the barrel I3a of the oil burner as will be clear from a study of Figures 2' and 3. Also the combustion chamber 40 is suitably provided with a clean-out opening 31 and for this opening the rear panel 8 is provided with a clean-out door 38.* From the above detailed description it will be appreciated that Water from the return side 34 will pass into the hollow 22 of section I8 and from section I8 pass through the successive sections I5, and section I'I, passing from the latter through the feed line 28, the water circulating through the hollows of the sections vas well as through the hollows of the tubes IIi.-
'I'he products of combustion will pass upwardly within the confines of the combustion chamber 30 40 and from this chamber the products of combustion will take a staggered course between the baiiles I6 to pass to the stack 3I through the flue 30, the products of combustion thus heating the water circulating through the sections I8, I5 and 35 I'I as is thought, apparent.
Access to the combustion chamber above referred to and indicated by the reference numeral 40 is had from one side thereof through an opening in the lower portion of the chamber 40, which 40 opening is closed by a suitable cover plate 4I. Access to the plate 4I may be had by removing the adjacent side panel 9 which is releasably secured inposition in any suitable manner by latches or the like, the handles of which ar'e shown 45 in Figure 1 and indicated by the reference numeral 42. l
Also in one side panel 8- there may be provided a suitable peep hole for which there is provided a door 43. 4 50 Also for using some of the water circulating within the hollows of the section for heating the water provided for domestic purposes, such as for bathing or the like there is provided a suitable n heater 44 in the form of a casing in which is 55 arranged a suitable coil, the casing being connected by piping 45 with one of the sections I5 and the coil /is connected by piping 46 with the house water system. Adverting again to the assemblage of the sec- 60 tions I5, I1 and I8, there are interposed between these sectionssuitable gaskets 41 and for posiy tively securing the sections together tie rods 48 are employed, and to accommodate these tie rods 65 the sections are provided at diagonal corners thereof with apertured lugs 49 as best shown in Figures 7 and 8.
Also to protect the oil burner I3 there is suitably mounted within the chamber I2 abovethe oil burner a shield 49 opposite portions of which are inclined as clearly shown in Figure 5 and the shield will serve to direct any particle of conden. sation to either side of the oil burner.

Having thus described the invention. what is claimed as new is:
l. In a boiler of the class described, a casing having a burner compartment in the bottom thereof, a heat exchange device arranged within v the casing and comprising a plurality of hollow substantially rectangular sections arranged above the burner compartment, said sections including a pair of end sections and a plurality of intermediate sections, said intermediate sections and one of said end sections respectively having spaced hollow bailies connecting the top and bottom sides thereof, said intermediate sections A`and said one section being substantially of frame "like form, and the other of said end sections being in the form of a hollow plate, said intermediate section and the first named end section being so arranged relative to one another as to have the bailles of one of said sections staggered with respect tothe bafiles of, the next adjacent one. of said sections, means connecting said sections in communication one with the other to provide for a iiow of water successively through the sections, and the flrst named end section havingintegrall therewith a combustion chamber having inn'er and outer spaced walls providing a water chamber connected with and communicating with said first named `end section, said combustion chamber ex- Atending downwardly to one side of the burner compartment and opening into said burner compartment, inlet means for the space between the `walls of the combustion chamber, and outlet means connected with the second named end sections whereby to provide for a circulation of water through the space between the walls of the combustion chamber and through the sections of the heat exchange device, the arrangement being such that the water circulating through the heat exchange device will be heated by the products of combustion passing from the combustion chamber and circulating about the bailles of said section.
