My invention relates to locomotive stokers of the class comprising a plurality of fuel con- Veyors arranged with two of the conveyors olfset laterally from each other at their adjacent ends and having independent drive connections at their rearward ends.
It is the principal object of the invention to improve upon stokers of the aforesaid class by substantially reducing the angular relation between the conveyors. More specifically, I contemplate the provision of a stoker having a fuel receiving conveyor on the tender, a fuel delivery conveyor on the locomotive, and an intermediate conveyor, the latter being offset laterally at one end from an adjacent end of one of the other conveyors and said adjacent end of that conveyor disposed at one side of the vertical medial plane of the locomotive and tender orat one side of theV vertical medial plane of the other of said .30 conveyors.
Another object is the provision of a specific embodiment of the invention as above wherein the rearward end of the intermediate conveyor is oiset laterally from the forward end of the tender conveyor.
Y A further object of the invention is the provision of stokers of the class described wherein the tender conveyor is disposed with the axis thereof lying at` one side of and substantially 3.o, parallel to the vertical medial plane of the tender or wherein said axis extends diagonally of and passes through said plane.
Av still further object of this invention is the provision of a stoker of the character specified -Si which is suitable for use inV connection with locomotive and tenders of conventional design.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying draw- 40 ings, in which,
, Figure 1 is a medial vertical section of adjacent parts of a locomotive and' tender, showing the invention in position thereon with portions broken away',
D FigureY 2 is a plan sectional view taken on the line' 2-2 of Figure 1, with portions of the locomotive and tender indicated by conventional lines;
Figures 3 and 4 are sectional views taken on 50 lines 3-3 and 44, respectively, of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a sectional View taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 2;
Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 2, illustrating another embodiment ofv my. invention;
and

(C1. lesa-i5) Figure 'l isa sectional view taken on the line 'I-l of Figure 6.
In Figures 1 to 5, inclusive, illustrating an embodiment of my invention, A represents the locomotive, B its tender, and C the coupling member therebetween, permitting articulation when the locomotive and tender are rounding curves or passing over switches and turntables. The locomotive A comprises a boiler l0 having a backwall II in which there is the usual firing opening I2, establishing communication between the cab I3 and the firebox I4. Above the floor I5 of the tender B is a fuel bin I6, the floor I5 being apertured centrally of the fuel bin as at Il, the' size of which aperture is controlled by the slidable plates I8.
Extending from beneath the apertured oor of the tender to the rebox of the locomotive is I a stoker, indicated generally at S. The Stoker S comprises the fuel receiving or tender conveyor D, the delivery conveyor E, and the intermediate conveyor F. The delivery conveyor E includes an inclined conduit I9 mounted on the locomotive and communicating with the rebox I4 through the opening I2, and an elevating or fuel delivery conveyor screw 2|] housed within the conduit I9 for delivering fuel to a distributing means 2l which spreads the fuel to all parts of the rebed The elevating screw and the conduit I9 are mounted so that their respective axes are in substantially the vertical medial plane of the locomotive and tender, or so that the fuel deliverymouthof the conduit I9 is disposed substantially equally on each Side of such plane.
The tender conveyor D is rigidly mounted beneath the apertured floor I5-ofl the tender in the compartment 22 and includes a trough-like conduit 23 provided with an open mouth 24 through which fuel falls from the bin I6 into the trough 23. The open mouth of the trough 23 is at least equal to the widthvand length of the aperture in the floor I5'to prevent loss of fuel. Fuel which is received within the trough-like conduit 23 is conveyed forwardly by conveyor screw 25 disposed within the trough with its axis at one side of and parallel to the vertical medial plane of the locomotive and tender. The screw 25 extends the length ofthe open mouth trough 23 and into a tubular extension 26, rigid with the trough and coaxial with the conveyor screw 25. A spherical member 2-1 is formed externally of the tubular extension and at the forward end thereof.
The fuel receiving conveyor screw 25 delivers fuel tothe screw 28 of the intermediate conveyor F'which screw has the forward end 29 thereof l March, 16, 1937. C. J. SURDY LoCoivIoTIvE sToKER Nw Mm .y INVENTOR. Wwf/e4 lm/'Jy BY NN www,
