Description

H.}VV.AIKBN Pneumatic Gong-Pull;
-No. 201,380. y 'Patented Aug. 231878.

IMPROVEMENT I N PNEUMATlC GONG.PULLS. I
Slceaiiml fol'l'lll' lmlt 0f Letters Patent NO. 207 ,380, dated August 2T, 1578-; application filed July 1e, leve.
To all 'whom it may concern: y
Be it known that I, HENRY V. AIKEN, of Fishkill Landing, in the county of Dutchess and State oi' New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pneumatic Gong- Pulls, of which the following is a specification: r i 1 Figure 1 is alongitudinal section of myimproved gong-pull. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same, taken through the line ai, Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a detail top view of the piston.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object oi' this invention is to furnish an improved gong-pull which shall be so constructed that the gong may be struck by the action of compressed air, and 'w rich may be used upon vessel', in houses, and in other places where signals are to be givenl The invention consists in an improved pneumatic gong-pull, made of brass or other suitable metal, and formed by the combination of the tube, the cylinder provided with a false bottom in its lower part, and with perforations just above the said false botto1n,t 11e piston provided with the valves, the pistou-rod, the spiral spring, the bent pipes, the ball orplunger, and the gong, with each other, as hereinafter fully described. i
A is a tube extending from the -place from which tothe place to which the signal is tobe given. To one end of the tube A is attached a cylinder,v ll, in which works a piston, C. The piston C isv made air-tight by suitable packing, and through it are formed one or mre holes, closed byvalves 1) opening npward.
To the center of the piston C is attached a rod, E, which passes ont through the cover of the cylinder B, and has a knob attached to its end for convenience in operating itl 'The pision l held down by a spiralspring, F,
- placed upon the piston-rod E, the'lower end ol' which rests against the said pistou (l, and
cylinder.--Tl1e`cylinderl3 is provided with an airtight false bottom or partitirm, ll, which is placed just abore Jrhe lower ends` oi.' thi-` pipcs G. Air is admitted into the cylinder l.- through liolcsin its sides just above the` false bottom H. p
In the other end of the tube A. is i''n'med :i
lvalve-seat, upon which rests a metal ball or plunger, i, and `inst above the said end is secured a gong, J. Y j
lith this construction, as the piston-,rod lil is pulled upward, thc air .above the piston (l is forced through the curved pipes G, thrmigh the space below the false bottom ll, and through the tube A, projecting,l the ball oiplunger I upward against the gong J'.
As the pistonrod Eis -releastul the spring' F forces the piston G back to its place, the air below the said piston opening the valves l), and passing into the upper part ot' the c \'linder B, ready to be again forced through the pipes G andthe tnbeA to give another signal.
A Havin g thus described my invention, I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent An improved pneumatic gong-pull, formed by the combination of the tube A, the eylinder B, provided-with a false bottoni', il, in its lower part, and with portera-tions inst above the-said false bottonnthe piston U, prigivided with the Valves D, the piston-rod l0, the spiral spring F, tne bent pipes i, the hall or plunger I, and the gong J, with each other, suhstantially as herein shown and deserihed.
Titnessesz JonN L. loolnin's. lll'. lil. Guu'rlss.
