Description

SUBMERGIBLE PUMP AND TRANSMISSION UNIT Original Filed Sept. 15, 1953 All I7 Patented Mar. 16, 1937 UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,073,623 r SUBMERGIBLE PUMP gND TRANSMISSION Charley C. Brown, Ponca City, and Samuel N. Van Wert and Armais Arutunofi, Bartlesville,
kla., assignors to Bartlesville, Okla.
lteda Pump Company,
4 Claims.
This invention consists in new and useful improvements in mechanism for raising fiuid'from deep oil and water wells, the present application being a division of our co-pending application Serial No. 689,532, filed Sept. 15, 1933, now Patent No. 2,032,000, February 25, 1936.
One object of this invention is to provide in the novel combination of a pump, submergible electric motor, transmission and lubricating unit disclosed in the parent application, an efficient means for transforming the rotary motion of the vertical shaft of an electric motor, into reciprocating motion of the pump stems.
Another object of our invention is to provide,
in a device of this character, means whereby different sizes or plungers or pistons and liners may be'used and whereby'the changing from one size to another may be accomplished conveniently in the field.
A still further object is to provide in a vertical duplex pump for oil wells, an arrangement whereby for a given well size, plungers of a maximum diameter may be employed. In other words, larger plungers may be used than the size nor- 5 mally prescribed by the center distance between the pump stems.
. Still another object is to'provide an arrangement of cross heads and stationary guides whereby, when it is necessary to unscrew an old 3 plunger and replace it with a new one, the cross heads areprevented from rotating by the stationary guides.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, our in- 35 vention consists in the novel features herein set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing in which numerals of 40 like character designate similar parts throughout the several views, i
Fig. 1 is an enlarged sectional view of the transmission unit.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on 45 line 2-2 of Fig. 1. 1 l
and 0 Fig. 4 isan enlargedsectional view of the pump unit showing at its lowerjend the point of con- ."nection with the transmission unit. a
In the drawing, referring to Figs. 1-3, the numeral I represents the upper, end of a motor shaft which extends upwardly into thelowerpor- 1 6'5 tion of a transmission "unit 2 and is .splined jas M Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of, the gearlug mechanism taken at right angles to Fig.1,
at 3 to operatively, carry a spur gear 4 which, through the medium of planetary gears 5 on pins 6"of a spider l, rotates a bevel pinion 8, the latter in turn operatively engaging a bevel gear 3 carried on the transverse shaft or axle iii. A gear H carried by the axle l-0 meshes with an intermediate gear l2 and through it transmits power to a toothed crank shaft gear l3 supported on bearings it.
The crank shaft gear I3 is formed with disclike sides [3a as. shown in Fig. 1, and is preferably machined out of a solid sphere-like forging, the gear, sides and bearings it being integral. This gear is operatively connected by means of connecting rods [5 to cross heads it which support the lower extremities of pump stems H, the latter being connected at their upper ends to hollow plungers it by means of suitable adapters It as shown in Fig. 3. It will be noted that the distance between the centers of the pump stems H is greater than the distance between the centers of the cross heads It- This arrangement permits the combination in a unitof a given outside diameter, the maximum strength of crank mechanism with plungers of a maximum diameter, a feature of great importance in handling large volumes of fluid.
Each plunger i9 is equipped with a valve 20, preferably of the ball type, at its upper end, and is open to communication with intake passageways 2! in the respective adapters l8. The
plungers iii are reciprocably mounted in a liner 22 in cylinder block 23 which is enclosed in a cylindrical screen-like casing 2 The casing 2% is perforated. as at 25 throughout the greater portion of its area and is closed at its upper extremity by a discharge valve plate 28 connected in any suitable manner to a discharge connection 21, the latter being provided with valves 28 and discharge passageways 29 which converge in communication with a central discharge conduit. The lower extremity of the casing 24 is closed by a packing housing 30 having stuffing boxes 3! through which the pump stems i1 reciprocate.
The cylinder block 23 is provided with intake ports 32 at its lower extremity, said ports being located below the perforations 25 in the screen elfected on the fiuid entering-thescreen 24.
.The packing housing 30 extends downwardly *from the pump unit and is connected by any suitable means to-the upper end of the jacket 33 a or casing 24, whereby a gas separating action is v is tightly enclosed in the jacket 33 with the cross head guide piece 35, crank shaft gear l3 with its bearings l4 and the other associated gears assembled in a supporting frame made up of two semi-circular sections 31 and 38 which extend longitudinally in the jacket 33. These semi-circular sections 31 and 38 are assembled in the form of a cylinder and are secured at their lower ends to a member 39 which houses a stationary internal gear 40 with which the planetary gears 5 are adapted to cooperate.
With this structure it will be seen that when the motor shaft l rotates, said rotary motion is transformed through the series of gears in the transmission unit to reciprocating motion of the connecting rods l5, which, through the medium of cross heads l6 and pump stems l1, reciprocate the plungers IQ of the pump. The reciprocation of the pump plungers causes fluid to be drawn into the cylindrical casing 24 through the perforations 25 from whence it flows downwardly to the bottom of the cylinder and in through the intake ports 32 located below the lowermost perforation 25 whereby a gas separating action is effected on the fluid being pumped. The fluid then rises through the respective intake passageways 2| at the lower ends of the plungers l9 and enters the space between the ball valves 20 and the standing valves 28, from whence as the plungers reciprocate, it is forced through the con verging discharge passageways 29 into the discharge conduit 21.
It will be noted that the particular arrangement of hollow plungers l9 carrying the traveling valves 20 permits the construction of a pump chamber with a minimum dead space between the traveling valves 20 and the standing valves 28. In other words, it allows the handling of gaseous liquids under a high compression ratio comparable to that of high pressure gas compressors.
From the foregoing it is believed that the construction and advantages of my invention may be readily understood by those skilled in the art without further description, it being borne in mind that numerous changes may be made in the details disclosed without departing from the spirit of the invention as set out in the following claims.
