The present invention relates to dispensing devices particularly adapted for the dispensing of cubes of sugar and is an improvement of my Patent 1,688,123 of October 16, 1928.
'I'he objects of the invention are toi provide a simple, dependable device of this character for dispensing one cube of sugar at a time; which will not clog; and in Whichthe granules of sugar which fall away from the cubes drop to a collectl0 ing chamber from which they may be cleaned periodically.
The foregoing and other objects of the invention are attained by the novel construction and arrangement of the parts described in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawing constituting part of this disclosure and in which :m

In the drawing the dispenser is shown as comprising a base It, on which is removably supported a container I I provided with a cover I2.
These members may either be made of metal or moulded material and if desired the container may be transparent for obvious reasons.
The base It] is preferably formed as a chamber I3 having a removable bottom plate I4 and the top plate I5 of which is preferably provided with openings I5? The container II is, in this instance, formed with a cylindrical portion I6 at its lower end and integrally formed therewith, is a cube receiving cup I'I communicated by the opening IB in said cylindrical portion. The container Il is preferably detachably secured to the base it as by means such as the illustrated threaded connection.
Within the cylindrical portion I6 is disposed an agitation and dispensing means comprising two opposed agitators I9 and 20 defining between them a cube receiving trough 2 I, the rear of which is the fixed curved wall 23, the front comprises a shutter portion 24 on the agitator I 9 and a similar portion 25 on the agitator 2D, and the bottom of which comprises the tiltable member 22 and the angularly disposed fixed chute 2t.
In the present embodiment of the invention, the member 22 is pivoted at 2l and is provided (Cl. 3l2--92) with a pin 28 engaged in a slot 29 in the agitator 2l). y The chute 26 is notched as at 3E) to accommodate the lug 3l on the forward portion of the tiltable member 22.
If desired, instead of the lug 3| being of narrow width, the entire width of the member 2l may be utilized beneath the cube to be dispensed, to tilt it from its position on the chute 26.
The mechanism for reciprocating the agitators I9 and 2li and for tilting the member 22 is preferably housed within the base I0. YThis mechanism is operable through the medium of the actuating plunger 32 movable in the sleeve 33. The mechanism comprises a lever 34 pivoted .l
at 35 to the base and having a pin and slot connection 36 with the plunger 32; a down reaching extension 3l or the agitator 2E) is also connected to the lever 34 and by means of the walking beam 38 pivoted at 39 to the slotted bracket MI, connection is made between the extension 3l and the extension 4I of the agitator I9.
Between a pin or the like 42 and the bottom of the plate I5, there is preferably provided a compression spring such as 43. A ledge 45, integral with the fixed plate I5 is arranged between the front portions of the agitators I9 and 22 (Figs. 2 and 4), said ledge being supported in spaced relation with the chute 23, by Walls 45a. This denes a chute area i3d immediately in front of the trough 2 I.
In use, cube sugar is placed in the container through the top opening therein and the cover l2 replaced. The cubes will be promiscuously disposed within the container, but at least two or three will assume the position shown in the Figure 3. Upon actuation of the plunger 32, the agitator 2U is moved downwardly and the agitator I9 moved upwardly. Since the shutters 25 and 24 are respectively integral portions of the agitators 2U and i9, these will also move apart to provide the opening shown in Figure 5 at i4 and since the pin 28 is carried down by its slotted connection with the agitator 2B, the member 22 is tilted around its pivot 2l and the lug 3l tips over the frontmost cube (Fig. 5) so it may pass through the opening 44, then through the opening IB in the container and so drop into the receiving cup il, the other cubes on the member 22 being moved to the rear oi the device by the reversing of the angular disposition of the member 22.
Only one cube of sugar is dispensed in this manner for the top cross member of'ledge 45 will prevent other cubes following by intercepting those cubes disposed above it. Should a cube fall past the ledge 45 it would come to rest on the member 22 or cubes resting thereon, and because of the angular disposition of said member will not tend to fall forward towards openings 44 and I8.
Upon release of the plunger 32, the spring 43 will return the parts to their normal position (Figs. 3 and 4) and it will be noted that possible jamming or clogging of the device is obviated by the reciprocatory action of the agitators I9 and 20.
In order to further enhance the sanitary attributes of the device, the receiving cup I1 may be provided with a spherically curved bottom whereby the tip of a teaspoon may be inserted under the dispensed cube of sugar to facilitate its removal therefrom without the aid of the ngers.
From the foregoing it can be seen that an improved device for the purpose has been provided, and although this disclosure is considerably detailed, no undue limitation, except those imposed by the prior art, should be interpreted in the following claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a cube sugar dispenser having a dispensing opening, spaced agitators vertically slidably mounted within the dispenser in such manner as to provide a trough between them, a iioor for said trough including a tiltable member, closure members for said opening carried by said agitators and means to vertically reciprocate the agitators in opposite directions to open and shut the closure members and to move said tiltable member to dispense a lump of sugar as the closure members are opened.
2. In a cube sugar dispenser, spaced agitators slidably mounted in the dispenser providing a trough between them, a floor for said trough including a xed portion and a tiltable member, a cube tipping extension on said tiltable member movable through a notch in the fixed portion of the floor, and means to reciprocate the agitators and to move said tiltable member and said extension into angular position relative to said iixed portion.
3. In a lump sugar dispenser, spaced agitators slidably mounted in the dispenser providing a trough between them, a floor for said trough, comprising a. tiltable member forming one portion of said floor, and a fixed portion extending from the tiltable portion and provided with a notch, a lug on the tiltable member and positioned in the notch, and means to reciprocate the agitators and to tilt said tiltable member whereby a cube of sugar is adapted to be tipped from its position on the fixed portion by the mentioned lug.
4. A sugar dispenser comprising a base, a container for cubes oi sugar detachably secured to the base and having a dispensing opening, agitating means supported on the base and forming a trough therebetween, shutter means carried by the agitating means, la tilting floor for said trough having a cube tipping portion; and means to reciprocate the agitating means and thereby open the shutter means, and to tilt the iioor of the rough whereby a cube of sugar in said trough is tipped by the cube tipping portion through the opening provided by the shutter means and through the opening in the container.
5. A sugar dispenser comprising a base, a container for cubes of sugar detachably secured to the base and having a dispensing opening, agitating means supported on the base and forming a trough therebetween, shutter means carried by the agitating means, a tilting floor for said trough having a cube tipping portion and means comprising mechanism in the base operable by plunger means carried by the base to reciprocate provided by the shutter means and through the opening in the container.
6. A sugar dispenser comprising a base, a container for cubes of sugar detachably secured to the base and having a dispensing opening, agitating means supported on the base and forming a trough therebetween, shutter means carried by the agitating means, a tilting oor for said trough having a cube tipping portion, a mechanical connection between said floor and one of Said agitating means, and means to reciprocate the agitating means and thereby open said shutter means and tilt said floor, whereby a cube of sugar in said trough is tipped by the cube tipping portion through the opening provided by the shutter means and through the opening in the con-` tainer.
