Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J. MAGNISI-I, OF BERLIN, WISCONSIN.
KNIFE AND SPOON CLEANER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 20,724, dated June 2.9, 1858'.
T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES MAcNIsH, of Berlin, in the county of Marquette and State of lVisconsin, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Machines for Cleaning Knives, Forks, and Spoons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, 1n which- Figure l, is a partial section and elevation of the machine. Fig. 2, is an end view of t-he same.
Similar letters of reference, in each of the several gures, indicate corresponding parts.
The nature of my invention consists in an improved new article of manufacture, to wit: a machine combining three disks, the faces of which are adapted for cleaning large and small knives, and the periphery of one of the same for sharpening knives, and the peripheries of the other two for cleaning the front and backs of spoons and forks, as hereinafter specified.
To enable others, skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to de scribe its construction and operation.
A, represents the frame of the machine adapted for supporting the cleaning and sharpening disks, and the gearing which operates the same. This frame is provided with a set screw a, so as to be fastened to a table as illustrated in red.
B, is a shaft for supporting and carrying the disks. This shaft is arranged on top of the frame A.
O, D, E, are three disks arranged on the shaft B, so that the inner faces of G, E, shall touch or nearly touch the faces of the central disk D, as shown. The faces of the disks O, E, are beveled off near their peripheries, so that the spaces o, o, between them, shall correspond to the beveled shape of the knife blades.
The central disk is composed of stone, or has its periphery at and coated with emery so as to serve the ohce of a grind stone in sharpening the knives. The faces of this disk are dressed with leather c, c', as shown.
Thedisk O, has its periphery made curved or convex as at d, so as to correspond to the inside of spoons and forks and is dressed on its face and periphery with leather e, c, as shown.
The disk E, has its periphery made concave as at f, so as to correspond to the backs of spoons and forks. The face and periphery o-f this disk are dressed with leather g, g, as shown.
The shaft B, which carries all the disks is drive-n by means of a band I-I, which leads from a pulley 7L, on said shaft to a large pulley z'., on a sha-ft I, which is driven by means of cogged gearing J, K.
It will be observed that the space between the disks O, and D, is deeper than the space between D, and E, the object of this is to make provision for sharpening carving and other large knives.
The o-peration is as follows: The scouring powder' being applied, the knives are introduced between the faces of the disks and the disks revolved rapidly by means of the gear-i ing which is actuated through a handle j, of the large cog wheel K. The forks and spoons are first scoured on their backs by being held against the concave periphery of the disk C; then on their front side by being held against the convex periphery of the disk E.
The knives are sharpened by being held against the Hat periphery of t-he disk D, in the same manner as when sharpened on an ordinary grind stone.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An improved new article of manufacture, to wit: a machine combining three disks C, D, E, the faces of which are adapted for cleaning large and small knives, and the periphery of one of the same for sharpening knives and the peripheries d, f, of the other two for cleaning the front and backs of spoons and forks, substantially as set forth.
