7 Claim.
This invention relates to a ventilator and par: ticularly to one which is adapted to be used in connection with a roof and to extend there along for considerable distances, ording maximum ventilation and at the same time preventing access of rain to the interior of the building.
The objects of the invention are to provide improved structure of supports. baiile mounting means, and control means. A more speciilc obiect is the provision of improved means for supporting and anchoring the bodies, which will render them more readily attachable while making superior provision for drainage.
A further object is to provide a novel and improved controlling means for the damper which in accordance with its position closes the opening in the roof or opens the same.
Other and more limited objects will become apparent from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a transverse section cor responding substantially to the line i--| of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of a fragment of a ventilator having parts broken 25 away and parts left in elevation; Fig. 3 is a detail section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a detail section taken on the line 4--4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a detail in perspective showing an upper corner of one of the baiiles; Figs. 6 and 7 are frag- 0 mentary views corresponding substantially to the upper right hand corner of Fig. 2 but showing the parts in different positions; Fig. 8 is a. transverse section. similar-to Fig. 1 but showing the modified embodimentof my invention; Fig. 9 is 5 a fragmentary detail elevation of a portion of the lower edge of one of the bailies; Fig. 10 is a section on theiine ill-l6 of Fig. 9; Fig. 11 is a section on the line H--ll of Fig. 9 and Fig. 121s a longitudinal sectional view similar to Fig. 2 but 40 showing the modified form of Fig. 8.
Referring now to the embodiment of Figs. 1 to 7, the numerals i6 and ii indicate, generally and schematically, spaced portions of a roof defining a ventilation opening therebetween. Secured to 45 the members in and II are sheet metal plates or strips l2 and I3 which extend upwardly above the said roof sections and terminate in beads i4 and I5. Extending across the space between the members l2 and i3 adjacent the top thereof 50 are a plurality of connecting strips l6. At similar spaced intervals are supporting bows indicated generally by the numeral i1 and comprising roof strip engaging portions l8 and I9 terminating at their lower ends in vertically upwardly extending projections 20 and 2 I, vertical support- 33. Each of the supports 32 and 33 extends outwardly and upwardly at substantially right angles to the angles 24 and 25 and terminates in'sharply bent upwardly and backwardly bent, hook-shaped terminal portions 34 and 35. Bailies 36 and 31 are supported by the lower members 26 and 2| and the upper members 34 and 35 respectively, having lower struck-out loops 36 and 39 adapted to receive the members 20 and M respectively and having their upper edges inwardly and backwardly bent to hook shaped cross section and provided with openings 46 adapted to receive the elements 34 and 35.
Mounted upon a pair of adJacent bow members l1 and extending longitudinally of the device are spaced angle members 4! and 42 to which are secured the lower outwardly extending flanges 43 and 44 of vertical plates 45 and 46. Mounted for free rotation between the plates 45 and 46 are upper and lower pulleys 41 and. Registering vertical slots 49 and 50 are formed in the plates 45 and 46 and receive a freely movable upper pin 5| provided with enlargements to prevent displacement. Below the slots 49 and 50 are angular registering slots 52 and 53 which receive a lower pin 5!.
Secured to the bow members I! or,a suitable number of them are brackets 54 to which are pivotally secured links 55 in turn pivotally connected to angle members 56 carried by the damper 51, the same consisting of an inverted V-shaped closure which may be composed of sheet metal and terminate in downwardly extending flanges 53 which loosely telescope the beads l4 and I5 of the plates l2 and I3. Connected to the links 55 or a suitable number of them are-levers 59 interconnected at their upper ends by a connecting member or members 56. One of the levers 59 also carries a pulley 6i at its upper end and the damper 51 is provided with an opening 62, adjabracket member 64.

In the upper edge of the dog 81 is a notch 88 which is adapted to cooperate with the upper pin BI and on the lower edge is formed a notch 88 adapted to engage the lower pin 8!. It will be noted that the notches 88 and 88 extend angularly in opposite directions and are so positioned that the pins Ii and Ilcould be received therein simultaneously except for the vertical spacing of the slots.
In Fig. 2 I have shown the parts in the position they occupy when the damper 81 is in closed position. To open the damper the operator pulls downwardly on the cable 88 whereupon the parts assume the position shown in Fig. 6, the action of the cable on the pulley 88 serving to assist the compound pulley system operating on the lever I8. When the parts have assumed the position of Fig. 6, the lowermost notch 88 in the dog 61 will have engaged against the lower pin ii. A further pull on the cable 88, being a part of the same pull which brings the parts to that position and separated into two parts for convenience merely, will cause the lower pin il to ride up the inclination of the slots 52 thereby elevating the dog 81 to such a point that the upper pin 8| will have engaged in the upper notch 88. The cable 88 is now released and the parts held in the position indicated in Fig. '7, that is. the dog 81 being held by the pin 5| against return to its original position and the damper 51 being thereby held in open position as indicated in Fig. '7. At the time the cable is released and the return notch of the dog 81 arrested by engagement of the notch 88 and the pin 5|, the lower pin 51* will drop by gravity to the bottom of the slots 52 and 88 as indicated in Fig. '7.
When it is desired to close the damper 51, the operator pulls downwardly on the cable 88 whereupon the dog 81 is released from the pin SI and by reason of having moved slightly to the right from the position shown in Fig. 7, rides upon the pin ii, that surface to the left of the notch 88 being in engagement with said pin il The cable 88 is now released and the parts returned to the position of Fig. 2. It will thus been that upon alternate'actuations oi the lever 58 by the cable 86, the.damper will be moved to and held in open position and released therefrom and allowed to return to closed position.
Referring now to the embodiment shown in Figs. 8 to 12, inclusive, the parts having the same construction as in the previous embodiment will be described and indicated by the same reference numerals while parts of different construction will be indicated by dlflerent numerals. The roof sections l8 and H, the plates I2 and I 8, and the bows II bear the same relations to each other as in Fig. 1 and are tied together with transverse strips ii of similar construction. The bows II are provided with lower upwardly and slightly outwardly extending projections 18 and H which are somewhat longer than corresponding projections 28 and 2|. The ridge roll 28 and the supporting members 82 and 83 are of substantially the same construction as in the previous form. The baflles 86 and 31 differ in respect to the anchoring means provided at the upp r and lower edges thereof. The lower edges areprovided with a series of outwardly pressed or bent. pockets I2 out of which are struck inwardly transverseloops 18 as best seen in Figs. 8, 10, and 11. The extreme lower edges, below the pockets I2 are bent slightly outwardly and engage against the plates I2 and I8, semi-circular notches 14 being provided for escape of water. The upper edges are folded inwardly and backwardly and are embraced in clamping relation by the terminal portions 84 and 88 of the supporting members 32 and 38. It is to be understood that the upper and lower anchoring means just described may be used in the combinations shown in Figs. 1 and 8 and the lower anchoring means of Fig. 8 may be used in connection with the upper anchoring means of Fig. 1 and vice versa.
Secured to the transverse members l8 are upwardly opening channel members 15 to which are pivotally connected downwardly opening channel shaped links 18 which in turn are pivotally connected to the flanges of downwardly opening channel members 'Il secured to and carrying the damper 81. Secured to the links 18 are lever plates 18 and 18. An extension 88 is riveted to the plate 18 and carries a pulley 18. Secured to one of the transverse members l8 are parallel plates 8| and 82 which are provided with registering vertical slots 88 and registering angular slots 84 between which and between the plates 8i and 82 is received a dog 85 pivotally carried by the lever plate 18 and provided with upper and lower notches 88 and 88 similar to those in the first embodiment. Pins 88 and 81 ride freely in the slots 83 and 84 and operate in the same manner as corresponding parts in the first embodiment of the invention described. A pulley 88 is mounted on one of the transverse strips I8 by means of a suitable bracket 88. A cable 88 is secured at one end to a pin 8| carried by the extension 88 and passes over the pulley 88 and is secured to the lower corner of the lever plate 18, as indicated at 81. The cable 88 passes over a similar pulley 82 carried by a bracket 83 to one or more other levers similar to those 18 and 18, if desirable. It is to be understood that the construction just suggested is not shown in the drawings, the cable 88 being broken oil at the lower left hand corner of the lower portion of Fig. 12. The construction suggested is to be used in cases where the ventilator is of great length and may simply amount to a repetition of the structure disclosed in Fig. 12, the broken off portion of the cable 88 being connected to an arm corresponding to the arm 88 on a lever corresponding to that 18 but positioned at a considerable distance farther to the left than the drawing extends. A channel member 84 is mounted on any suitably fixed part of the device and carries a pulley 85 and an attaching member 88 to which is secured the end of a cable 81 which passes around the pulley 18, the pulley 85 and downwardly to a suitably convenient position for operation.
From the foregoing and the drawings, particularly Figs. 8 and 12, it will be apparent that a downward force on the cable 81 will result in rotating the arm 88 and plate 18 in a counter clockwise direction about the pivot carried by the element 15. At the same time the cable 88, being attached to the plate 18 at its lower end, will cause it to rotate in the same direction and to the same extent about the pivot carried by the element 15. This rotation will result in elevating the damper 51 and causing a pivot action between its brackets IT and the pivots at the right hand ends of the plates 18 and I9. The latch element attached to the plate 19 will cooperate with the latch elements 86 and 8'! in the manner above described. It will thus be seen that by an operation of the cable 91 the damper 51 will be moved to and held in open position and released and allowed to move to closed position alternately upon successive operations. In the case of both embodiments, one operation of the operating cable will cause the damper to be opened and held in open position and the succeeding operation will release it and allow it to move to closed position.
From the foregoing, it will be clear that I have provided a ventilator which is well adapted for its intended purpose and while I have shown and described the present preferred embodiments, I wish it understood that I am not limited to the details shown but only in accordance with the spirit and scope of the appended claims and prior art.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In combination, longitudinally spaced supporting members mounted above a roof opening, a damper movable toward and from said opening, and means for holding said damper in open position, said last means including spaced links pivotally connecting said damper and a plurality of said members, a lever connected to one of said links, a pair of spaced plates, having formed therein registering, vertical, upper slots and angular, registering, lower slots, pins freely movable in said upper and lower slots, a dog pivoted to said lever and riding between said pins and pro vided with notches in opposite sides thereof and means for operating said lever to engage and disengage said dog and said pins.

3. In combination, longitudinally spaced supporting members mounted above a roof opening, a damper movable toward and from said opening,

ed to said links, a pair of spaced plates, having formed therein registering, vertical, upper slots and angular, registering, lower slots, pins freely movable in said upper and lower slots, 2, dog pivoted to said levers and riding between said pins and provided with notches in opposite sides thereof and means for operating said levers to engage and disengage said dog and said pins.
4. In combination, supporting bows mounted above a roof opening, a ridge roll supported by said bows, baffles carried by said bows at each side of said ridge roll, a damper covering said roof opening, links connecting laterally spaced parts of said damper to a plurality of said bows at laterally spaced points, means for moving, said links and automatic means for holding and releasing said links alternately upon successive operations of said moving means.
5. In combination in a device of the character described, supporting means, a damper, links connecting said damper and supporting means, a lever connected to one of said links, a pulley mounted on said supporting means, a cable connected to said lever and passing over said pulley for operating said lever to open and close said damper and latching means for latching said damper in open position and unlatching the same alternately and automaticallyupon successive actuations of said lever by means of said cable. 6. In combination in a device of the character described, supporting means, a damper, links connecting said damper and supporting means, a lever connected to one of said links, a pulley mounted on said supporting means, a cable connected to said lever and passing over said pulley for operating said lever to open and close said damper and latching means'for latching said damper in open position and unlatching the same alternately upon successive actuations of said lever by means of said cable, said latching means including a dog pivoted to said lever, plates carried by said supporting means, upper, registering, substantally vertical slots formed in said plate and lower, registering, angular slots formed therein, pins freely movable in said slots and said dog extending between said pins and provided with notches adapted to engage such pins.
7. In combination in a device of the character described, supporting means, a damper, links connecting said damper and supporting means, a lever connected to one or said links, a pulley mounted on said supporting means, an opening in said damper, a pulley mounted on said damper and' overhanging said opening, a cable connected to said lever and passing over said pulleys for operating said lever to open and close said damper and latching means for latching said damper in open position and unlatching the same alternately upon successive actuations of said lever by means of said cable. i
