In the illustrated embodiment of the invention there is shown a single unit of an inner cylinder of a washer used in laundries for Washing various articles. This inner cylinder is made up of a plurality of similar units which are bolted together end to end, and each of said units is subdivided into a plurality of sector-shaped compartments, each of which has a door and door opening for the introduction of the articles to be washed into the compartment and for their removal therefrom. The cylinder Il) is perforated in order to allow the Washing solution to percolate through the articles being washed as the cylinder is being rotated. The cylinder unit has a plurality of inwardly projecting hollow ribs` |I which are also perforated.y One rib I I is adjacent one side of the door opening. A door frame surrounds the'door opening which is rectangular. The door frame consists of a flange I2 on one of the radial walls of the cylinder, a strip I3 secured to a flange I4 of the rib II, and rings I5. The ange I2 and the strip I3 are disposed at opposite ends of the door opening and the rings I5 are disposed, respectively, at opposite sides of said opening. 'I'he door opening is controlled by a door I6 which fits the frame surrounding the opening, said door being arcuate or circumferentially curved. The door has a plurality of hand holds I'I at' one end thereot` for sliding the door to opened and closed positions. A rabbeted strip I8 is secured to the flange I2 and serves as a stop to limit the sliding movement of the door I6 to its closed position. Parting rings or spacers I9 are secured, respectively, to the rings I5, and guide rings surround the rings I9 and are secured thereto. The rings I5, I9 and 20 constitute guides for the door I6.
The door locking, releasing and clamping mechanism consists of the following parts. Four latch members 2| are mounted on the outside of the door I6. A pair of the latch members 2| is arranged near each end of the door. Each latch member 2| is held in place for axial movement by a bearing 22 secured to the door I6 on the outside. Each latch member 2| has a conical outer end 23. The latch members 2| are engageable, respectively, with keepers 24 secured to the rings 20. A pair of the keepers 24 are arranged at each end of the door opening so as to receive the outer ends 23 of the latch members 2|, respectively, when the door I6 is in its closed position against the stop I8. Each keeper 24 has a conical hole therein slightly larger than the conical end 23V Links 2l each have one end pivotallyv Y Vreverse rotation of the disk 26 because the gearV and63. A'forced under'the strip I8 thereby tightly pressing l"saidend against the frame.
adjustments to compensate for wear or other variations. The disc 26 has a radial arm 3|. Linkage is provided consisting of members 32, 33 and 34, respectively. The member 32 has one end pivotally connected with the arm 3| as at 35, and its other end is pivotally connected with one end of the member 33, as at 36. The other end of the member 33 has a bolt and slot connection 3l with one end of the member 34. The member 33 has sliding movement in a guide 38 secured to the door. Turnable parts or discs 39 are mounted on studs 4). respectively, secured to the door i3. Each disc 39 Ahas an arm 4|, and there being a bolt and slot connection 42 between each arm 4| and the link member 34. Each disc 33 has an arm 43 pivotally connected with one end of a link 44 as at 45, and the other end of said link 44 being pivotally connected with a latch member 2|, as at 46. Ea-ch link 44 has a turn-buckle 41 to increase or decrease the length thereof. A gear set or equivalent means is employed `for turning the disc 26 to actuate the latch' members 2| through the intervention of the linkage and the discs 39. The gear set consists of va crank `'spindle 50 which is mounted transversely of theA door i6 and has an outer nonc'irc'ular end 5| to accommodate a suitable crank. A beveled gear 52 on the spindle 50 meshes with a beveled gear 53 on a worm 54 which meshes with Va Worm gear 55 'fast on a shaft 5B. The shaft'E extends'transversely with respect to the door and has (an outer non-circular end 51 which isfdi'sposed 'in a similarly shaped hole in the disc-a` to cause the latter to rotate in response to the rotation of the shaft 56. The disc 25 is held on the shaft 56 by a nut and Washer 58 on the shaft 55. The gear set is' enclosed in a casing or housing 59 secured to the inside of the door i6 as at 61B. The shaft v585 of the 'gear 55 being directly connected to the disk 26 prevents 55 can not turn the Worm 54; hence unintentional release of Ithe latch members Will be prevented.
