Specification forming partof Letters Patent No. 206,901, dated August 13, 1878; application filed July 5, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JULIUS P. RUHMANN, of Schulenburg, in the county of Fayette and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Insect-Destroyers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawin gs,which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in insect-destroyers; and it consists in the arran gem eat and combination of devices whereby a poisonous liquid may be forced over plants of all kinds in the form of a spray, as will be more fully described hereinafter.

The accompanying drawings represent my invention.

a represents the reservoir for holding the poisonous fluid, and which may be of any desired shape or construction, and which will be mounted upon wheels for ease of transportation. Passing down into this reservoir from any convenient point is the pump-cylinder b, in which the piston c is worked up and down by means of the lever d. The lower end of this cylinder is made funnel-shaped, and to it is fastened the rubber or other tube 0, which connects it with the strainer f. This strainer is made in two parts for the introduction of a straining cloth, g, and for convenience in cleaning. The lower end of the strainer is perforated, and, if desired, any additional straining matter may be placed between the perforated bottom and the cloth, so as to make sure that no substances shall be forced into the sprinkler to clog its action. To the lower end of the cylinder is secured the dischargepipe h, upon the top of which is formed the air-chamber i. Upon the outer end of the discharge-pipe is placed the sprinkler I, which is round and fiat, as shown, and perforated about one-half around. Upon the top of this sprink ler is screwed the cap or cover 122, secured to which is the brush a. The handle of the brush is bent at right angles, as shown, and is secured to the cap in such a manner as to form, as it were, a part thereof, so that as the brush is moved around to clear away any obstructions which may have a tendency to close up the fine perforations in the edge of the sprinkler, the cap turns with it. By means of this screw-cap the brush can be adjusted up and down at will, so that after cleaning off the perforations the brush can be depressed down below the level of the holes, so as to be out of the way. This adjustability renders the operation of the brush much more perfect, and enables the brush to be always kept in the sprinkler ready for use at any moment.

Instead of a single sprinkler there may be two, three, or more, and the perforations may be so formed as to throw the fluid straight out or upward at an angle, so as to kill the bugs under as well as on top of the plants.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The sprinkler I, provided with the cover on and brush n, the brush being vertically adjustable in the sprinkler, substantially as shown.

2. The combination of the reservoir a,pump b c (1, connection 6, strainer, f, pipe h, and nozzle 1, having an adjustable brush, 21, substantially as described.
