E. MEYER PACKING STRIP Filed June 5, 1935 J DUE 27703 Patented Jan. 19, 1937 UNITED STAES PACKING STRIP ration of New York Application June 3, 1935, Serial No. 24,633
4 Claims.
This invention relates to packing or caulking strips to be used between structural members.
The invention is especially useful in filling expansion grooves between masonry or other structures.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide a packing strip of superior construction, and adapted to be placed in position with accuracy and efficiency.
Other objects will appear from the following description and the accompanying drawing.
Of the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a resilient packing strip embodying the invention in its preferred form.
Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the apparatus of the invention in its preferred form, in use, the packing strip being shown as partially applied between structural members, only one of the structural members being shown.
Fig. 3 is a sectional View taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, showing the packing strip lying over an expansion crevice between two structural members.
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view of the strip and the applying device, taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a similar view taken on line 55 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional view, taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 2, showing the strip being applied to the crevice.
Fig. 7 is a sectional view, taken on line 'l'l of Fig. 2, showing the strip in place in the crevice.
Referring to the drawing, the packing strip 10 comprises a narrow sheet of pliable and resilient material, preferably sponge rubber, of substantially uniform thickness, formed with a crease l I extending longitudinally and centrally thereof,
in one of its faces, and a corresponding ridge l2 opposite thereto, to facilitate folding along a medial line and to assist in properly centering the strip over the crevice.
A convenient apparatus for applying the strip to the crevice comprises a rotatable disc l3, adapted to follow the crease H and to tuck the strip into the crevices, and a pair of cylindrical rollers l4, l5, flanking the disc and rotatable therewith, adapted to engage the faces of the structural elements I6, ll adjacent the crevice, to limit the entry of the disc into the crevice and, by their frictional engagement with said faces, to rotate the disc.
To guide and control the device, a handle I8 is fixed to a bifurcated yoke I9, through which a bolt 20 extends and provides an axle for the disc and rollers. A folder or guide H is fixed to the yoke l9 and is of such shape as to provide at its outer end a guide channel equal in width to the unformed strip, as illustrated in Fig. 4, and, toward the yoke, progressively changing to U-shape in cross-section, the folder being longitudinally curved in the plane of the tucking disc to cause the m'argins of the strip to be placed under tension to prevent buckling of the margins.
The guide is formed with retaining lips 22, 23 to prevent lateral shifting of the strip.
In applying the packing strip to the crevice, the strip is laid along the crevices with the ridge l2 entering the crevice to center the strip. One end of the strip is then lifted and started into the forward end of the guide and the applicator is engaged with the crevice. The device is then pushed along the crevice, progressively forming the strip and engaging it in the crevice in U-shape at a uniform depth.
I claim:
1. A packing for filling a crevice between structural members, said packing comprising a narrow strip of pliable resilient material having a preformed folding crease medially of the face thereof, and a corresponding ridge on the opposite face.
2. I A packing for filling a crevice between structural members, said packing comprising a narrow strip of soft sponge rubber having a preformed crease medially of one face thereof, and a corresponding ridge on the opposite face.
3. A packing strip for filling a crevice between structural members, said packing comprising a narrow strip of soft cellular vulcanized rubber having a preformed crease medially of one face thereof to induce determinate folding of the strip along its medial line when the strip is subjected to deforming forces.
4. A packing strip for filling a crevice between structural members, said packing comprising a narrow strip of soft cellular vulcanized rubber having a preformed crease medially of one face thereof and a corresponding ridge on the opposite face to induce determinate folding of the strip along its medial line when the strip is subjected to deforming forces.
