This invention relates to road grading machines, and particularly to an edging attachment for the grader blade.
The object of the invention is the provision of a simple and eflicient edging device for attachment to an end of a grader blade, which device is adapted to ride freely on the surface being graded, is capable of various movements relative to the blade to accommodate irregular surfaces over which traveling, and is capable of predetermined angular adjustment relative to the blade to suit desired conditions of use.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following detailed description of the invention and from the accompanying drawings illustrating one embodiment of the invention, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective side view of a grading machine with a device embodying the invention attached, in the present instance, to the rear end of the grader blade; Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective inner side view of the attachment removed from a grader blade; Fig. 3 is an outer side elevation of the attachment; Fig. 4 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 3, with the device attached to the blade, and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary section on the line 5-5 in Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, l designates a power grader of any suitable type or construction and equipped with a grader blade 2 which is suspended from the machine frame for vertical adjustment and is disposed on a taper transversely of the machine frame so that one end is in ad- Vance of the other, as well understood in the art. 35 The edging attachment comprising the invention may be made in rights and lefts for attachment to either end of the grader blade, as may be desired to suit the work to be performed. In the present instance, the edger is shown as attached to the rear end of the blade, so that the scrapings which pass toward such end in the operation of the machine are caught by the edger and caused to be distributed over the road surface within the confines of the blade, thus confining the scrapings to a straight edge instead of being left in a row without the tail end of the blade. It is apparent that if the edger is attached to the forward or nose end of the blade, it will impart a straight edge of the road surface at such end of the blade path.
The edging attachment comprises a vertically disposed plate 3 preferably, though not necessarily, of a height greater than the blade and 5s riding on the road surface with both its forward having a straight shoe edge 4 at its bottom for and rear ends curving upward into the end edge lines of the blade. The outer side of the plate 3 is provided preferably at the rear of the center of its horizontal axis with spaced parallel ribs 55 forming a vertical guideway 6 in which a plate 1 is mounted for vertical reciprocatory movements. Attached to the slide plate 1, and extending freely through a vertical slot 8 in the edger plate 3, is a trunnion member 9, which is fixed at its inner end to a vertically disposed bracket member Ill, which bears against the inner side of the edger plate 3 for pivotal movements relative thereto and forms one member of a hinge, the other member of which is designated I I and is fixedly attached to the adjacent end of the blade 2. The trunnion 9 serves to hold both the slide plate I and the bracket member Ill to the respective opposed sides of the edger plate 3. The edger plate 3 extends some distance ahead of the blade and also preferably a short distance to the rear, as shown.
The hinge members l0 and II are preferably greater in length than the vertical width of the scraper blade 2, so as to project slightly above the upper edge of the blade, and the member II has a portion l2 which is adapted to lap the respective end of the blade 2 and to conform in shape thereto. The part !2 and the end of the blade are provided with apertures l3 for receiving attaching bolts.

These members are provided at their up per end portions with horizontally disposed lapping parts l5 and I6 from one of which a clamping bolt or screw ll projects through a registering segmental slot it in the other, thus permitting the edger plate 3 to be angularly adjusted within limits relative to the blade 2 and then clamped in adjusted position. A brace arm 2!] projects forwardly from the upper end of the hinge member 10 along the inner side of the edger plate 3 in contact therewith and is provided at its free end with a bolt or screw 21 which projects freely through a vertically disposed segmental slot 22 in l respective cars 21 projecting outward from the lower end portion of the slide plate I, thus acting to yieldingly urge the edger plate downward into engagement with the road surface over which operating.
It is apparent that I have provided an edger attachment for the scraper blades of grading machines, which is adapted to project a considerable distance forward from the end of the blade to which attached, is angularly adjustable in a horizontal plane relative to the blade to suit the desired direction of projection from the blade and mounted for both vertical rocking and vertical reciprocatory movements relative to the blade to permit it to follow irregularities in the surface over which it is traveling.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific form, construction or arrangement of the parts, as it is capable of numerous modifications and changes without departing from the spirit of the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is:
1. In an edger attachment for grader blades, an edger plate, a mount for the plate adapted to be attached to a grader blade end and having free Vertical rocking and vertical sliding connections with the plate.
2. In an edger attachment for grader blades, an edger plate, a mount for the plate adapted to be attached to a grader blade end and having vertical rocking and vertical sliding connections with the plate, and means connecting said plate and mount and urging downward movements of the plate relative to the mount.
3. In an edger attachment for grader blades, an edger plate, a mount for the plate adapted to be attached to a grader blade-end and having free vertical rocking and vertical sliding connections with the plate, said mount also having an adjustable rocking connection with the plate with its rocking axis at an angle to the rocking axis of. said other rocking connection.
4. In an edger attachment for grader blades, an edger plate, a mount for the plate adapted to be attached to a grader blade end and having double pivotal and also vertical sliding connections with the plate, with the axes of the pivots angularly disposed, means for holding the plate in any predetermined position of one pivotal adjustment of the plate relative to the mount, and means connecting said plate and mount and urging downward movements of the plate relative to the mount.
5. In an edger attachment for grader blades, an edger plate, a mount for the plate adapted to be attached to a grader blade end, said mount having a vertical hinge to permit angular horizontal adjustment of the plate relative to an attached blade and having a pivot permitting free relative vertical rocking movements of the plate and blade, and means for securing the plate in any position of its horizontal pivotal adjustment relative to the plate.
6. In an edger attachment for grader blades, an edger plate, a mount for the plate adapted to be attached to a grader blade end, said mount having a vertical hinge to permit angular horizontal adjustment of the plate relative to an attached blade and having a pivot permitting relative vertical rocking movements of the plate and blade, said mount also having free vertical sliding connection with the plate, and means yieldingly connecting the plate and mount to urge a relative downward movement of the latter.
7. The combination with a grader blade, of an edging attachment therefor including an edger plate, a mount therefor attached to an end of the blade and providing a double pivotal connection between the blade and plate with the axes of the pivots angularly disposed one to the other, whereby the plate may rock in both horizontal and vertical planes relative to the blade, and means for securing the plate in predetermined positions of its horizontal pivotal movements, the plate being free to rock on its other pivot.
8. The combination with a grader blade, of an edging attachment therefor including an. edger plate, a mount therefor attached to an end of the blade and providing a double pivotal connection between the blade and plate with the axes of the pivots angularly disposed one to the other, whereby the plate may rock in both horizontal and vertical planes relative to the blade, and means for securing the plate in predetermined positions of its horizontal pivotal movements,
said mount also having free vertical sliding connection with the plate transverse to one of said pivots.
9. The combination with a grader plate, of an edging attachment therefor including an edger plate having a vertical guideway intermediate its ends and a vertically elongated opening adjacent to said guide, a mount for attaching the plate to the end of the blade, said mount having a sliding connection with said guideway, and a pivotal blade, said mount having sliding connection with means connecting the plate and mount to urge a relative downward movement of the plate, and
means included in the mount for eirecting angular horizontal adjustment of the plate relative to the blade.
11. The combination with a grader blade, of an edging attachment therefor including a horizontally elongated edger blade, at mount for attaching said plate rearwardly of its forward end to an end of the blade and including hinge members for permitting relative angular horizontal adjustment of the plate and bladeand also including a combined free pivotal connection and a sliding connection with the plate to permit predetermined vertical movements thereof relative to the blade, said mount having an arm extending forward therefrom along one side of the plate and bracing the plate against horizontal angular movements relative to the blade, and means cooperating with the mount to hold the plate in angular horizontal adjusted relation to the blade.

In a device of the class described, in combination, a grader blade, an edger plate at an end of said blade, and means connecting the blade and plate together, said means including a free pivotal connection which permits vertical rocking of the plate relative to the blade during operation, also a pivotal connection which permits horizontal rocking of the plate relative to the blade, and a means adjustable to hold the blade in any position of its horizontal movement relative to the blade.
13. In a device of the class described, in combination, a grader blade, an edger plate at an end of said blade, and means connecting the blade and plate together, said means including a free pivotal connection which permits vertical rocking of the plate relative to the blade during operation, also a pivotal connection which permits horizontal rocking of the plate relative to the blade, also a free sliding connection which permits vertical movements of the plate relative to the blade during operation, and a means adjustable to hold the plate in any position of its horizontal movement relative to the blade.
14. In a device of the class described, in combination, a grader blade, an edger plate at an end of the blade, and means connecting the blade and plate together, said means including a member fixed to the blade end, a second member hinged to the first member for horizontal rocking movements, and means for holding the two members in predetermined adjusted relation, said second member having free vertical rocking connection with the plate to permit rocking of the plate relative to the second member and blade during operation.
15. In a device of the class described, in combination, a grader blade, an edger plate at an end of the blade, and means connecting the blade and plate together, said means including a member fixed to the blade end, a second member hinged to the first member for horizontal rocking movements, and means for holding the two members in predetermined adjusted relation, said second member having free vertical rocking connection with the plate to permit rocking of the plate relative to the second member and blade during operation, and also having free vertical sliding connection with the plate to permit vertical movements of the plate relative to the second member and blade during operation.
