Description

UNITE STATES PTE Vr orales.
I). V. TOY, OF NEW' YORK, N. Y.
PORTFOLIO-FILE.
by declare the following to be a correct de scription of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which repre sents the portfolio lying open with a piece of music filed in it.
The `nature of my invention consists in combining with a portfolio and ile for music, papers,&c., a contrivance for holding` down the leaves of music while playing, and a device for converting the portfolio into a perfect bound book when full.
In the drawing the letters A A mark the sides of the portfolio; B B the back of the same; C the metallic rod or guard for conlining the music, &c.,on the cords; DD the cords on which the music, &c., is filed; d, CZ, the holes in rod C through which the cords pass; E, E, the elastic bands for holdingl down the leaves of the music when turned over; F F the loops for completing the binding when the file is full.
The sides and back A, B, of the portfolio are finished in any style that may be preferred. For music I have found plush and velvet well adapted as they do not scratch the highly polished surface of the piano or other instrument on which they may be placed.
The file is formed by two cords attached to the right of the back of the portfolio at the points indicated by (Z, (Z, and passing through holes in rod C at those two points. The music, &c., to be filed, is strung on to these cords, perforations having been previously made at the proper points, and the ends of the cords passed through rod C and tied together. l/Vhen it is desired to hold down a leaf, itis passed under the elastic band on either side. An index is placed as shown on the inside of the left hand cover. YVhen a sufficient quantity of matter has been filed to be equal in thickness to the width of the back B of the portfolio, the rod C is glued down and the cords D, D, passed through the loops F, F, and securely and permanently fastened, when a completely bound volume is produced.
Having thus described my invent-ion, I wish `it to be understood that I do not claim separately the sides and back A, B, or the mode of filing by the cords D, D, and rod C, but
I do claiml. Separately the elastic bands E, E, and the loops F, F, arranged and operating as described.
2. I also claim the combination of the portfolio cover with the file, loops and bands substantially as described, as forming a new, convenient and useful article.
The above specification signed and witnessed this second day of June 1858.
P. W. TOY.
